Thank you for the laugh, Mr. "World Class Art Piece". Yes, I'm sure people will be lining up to see that black, glass square just like they do for 80's LED digital watches. The Apple Watch is what, 18-20 months old? Is that really a good test of its design's timelessness?

Yes, despite my giving you a hard time, now that they have GPS I will probably eventually replace my Garmin with one, but let's not kid ourselves about what it is - a disposable, mass-produced, cribbed from an iPhone watch with terrible battery life.

Don't get so angry. I'm just saying it like it is. A lot of those old red LED watches are collectibles and quite cool.

I don't know why they are buying Pebble, they are good, they make good watches, and were the real trailblazers, but I can't see value there.

Quality staff no doubt and intellectual property.

Battery life with watchOS 3 I'm finding a big improvement I have 40% approx power left when I put on charger in the evening.
This will vary from user to user but not 'terrible'.
I find the battery is better than my iPhone 6 ever has been even when it was brand new.

From the perspective of a Pebble User, that is still pretty bad. I rather enjoy having one less item I have to remember to charge every night. I also spend a lot of time outdoors, so I imagine that it would drain considerably faster for me.

As long as I get a day with some spare I'm happy as its just habit to charge iPhone and apple watch together rather than iPhone everyday apple watch every few days or when low power warning comes on.

I'm assuming most folk charge their iPhone everyday.

I'm still waiting for my Time 2 from Kickstarter. I think this is going to be good news long term. I love my Pebble. Charging once a week is awesome. But the company has been terrible. I also own Fitbits and I've had great experiences with their customer service. Hopefully they just use the Pebble technology and make things better. Fingers crossed.

Agreed. From my readings and overview, Pebble struggles with consistency in their hardware line and customer service relations. Pebble hasn't necessarily put out bad products per se, it's been More of them
Not standing behind their product when the customer has experienced issues, which will decimate any manufacturer. Pebble has been slowly dying for years now, but surprisingly, they were one of the first to have wearable technology on the market.

I believe Pebble was trying to expand beyond beyond a "Notification" Watch, and into more health orientated. Appears it was to little, to late.

I think their CEO, Eric Migicovsky, had a vision, but failed to carry the Company further, and I'm not ridiculing him, but Pebble lacked core values in expansion and customer support.

Some have had positive experiences, but the consensus was rather poor with customer relations not standing behind their product, which can't happen in a world of uncertainty in wearable technology.

In fact I've had to charge my iPhone twice a day as of late. Usually once off of my external battery, which I also then have to charge. I also have to charge my MacBook. NOT having to charge yet another device all the time is extremely convenient to me. Especially since the watch shows me my notifications whilst my phone is tied to the wall.

Hi
Yep same here my iPhone 6 Sept '14 had a new battery fitted a few months ago from a high steet shop yet some days I have to charge it 3 times!
I have checked with coconut battery and all okay.
I have a power pack in the car and 3 metre lightning cables in most rooms.
Just holding out till next year.

Techcrunch is reporting that Fitbit paid $40 million for Pebble. That's an acquihire because VC investment into Pebble was around that number so no one really made any money from it.

RIP Pebble.

PS: Fitbit will be in trouble next year as well. All this space is being commoditized quickly.

You don't have to remember to charge something nightly. It simply becomes habit. You're more likely to forget to charge a device that requires less frequent charges. Not saying less battery life is better, but this "remembering" angle isn't really true. That said, the battery typically lasts 1.5 days for many users now, so as long as you have 15 min to throw it on the charger sometime in the first half of the day, you'll be alright, even if you somehow forget to charge it at night. I've read that some people actually use it as a sleep tracker and only charge it while they shower/get ready in the morning. The Pebble's superior battery life is definitely a pro, but I don't find the Apple watch a pain to use on a day to day basis. The biggest downside (but manageable) is needing a charger for any length of travel, not the day to day stuff.

I also spend a lot of time outdoors, so I imagine that it would drain considerably faster for me.

The watch doesn't really drain any faster outdoors. While increased screen brightness could be a factor, the screen is off the vast majority of the time (when you're not looking at it).

Pebble Time 2 looks super good! For me, it's much more appealing than an Apple watch. I hope these two companies have a successful merger, and put out an amazing product. Competition is good in the wearables market, even for those who choose Apple watch. Keeps everyone innovating.

But I'm much more impressed with Pebble than I am with the Apple Watch under Mr. Tim Cook, aka dongle head. I hear Tim is going to start offering dongles in rose gold!

Man I miss Steve..

That's not how you write Apple Watch.

The problem is that I don't see relevant IP there and the staff might be good, but I don't think they are exceptional.

From what I have read, Pebble's customer service struggles. From my understanding, They don't offer a customer contact number and they respond by E-mail, which The time frame in between responses may vary. Exceptional service should offer direct contact and a customer has the ability to directly relate there concerns to a live representative. E-mails are ain't always appropriate, especially when you have a disgruntled customer who has multiple questions and wants to express concerns.

I believe people seriously underestimate just how amazing the Watch is. I remember when I first got my Gen 1: I was defending it in here, against so many people saying how it had no use. I kept telling them it does like 5 things well blah blah blah. Ever since watchOS 3, I get times where I look at my watch like 3 times in a row, boom boom boom, and I was saying to myself like wow this thing is going bonkers. But these jobs were mostly just notifications, but info that I wanted. Siri commands work 4 out of 5 times now edging towards 90%. Then Apple Music when I hop in my SUV, is awesome. So it's kinda like yeah, "whatever the Watch sucks", a nah! DESTINATION $1,200 = Gen 2 Series 2 coming up in February... My Gen 1 ROCKS, it still gets 16 hours, with 30% at the end of the night! I seriously hope Apple stays in business to make my MacBook, iPhone, Watch, and TV with Xcode. We can only hope for the Mac Pro. I'll be good! ...oh and what does this have to do about this article? I don't think other companies can even come CLOSE! to keeping up...really tho...

I was a Pebble 1 KS customer. Loved it at the time. But it stopped working. So I contacted Pebble, but didn't expect much as it was over a year old, but they sent me a replacement, and allowed me to keep my KS edition. Great customer service. I have Apple Watch now, and don't miss my pebble, but I am still sad to see pebble go, and even more sad to see Fitbit will kill off the brand.

So the overall smart watch market declined by 51%. That is a lot. It means that most of the people who want a smart watch already have one. It was like this with tablets too. At first they sold well then everyone who needed one had one.

It's not the end of the world. Kohler still makes money selling toilets and I assume most homes and business already have at least one of those. Not long from now Apple will have to accept that like cars, refrigerators and toilets, people will only replace their watches, phones and computers when they break. Markets can't grow (faster then the population) forever.

Pebble products are simple and easy to use and that is their USP.

Really sad to hear, pebble is going to die in this way..

Their model of 'lets do another Kickstarter to fund the next release' got old?

I like my Pebble, but I use a Martian full-time because I got sick of Pebble's Kickstarter sales model.

I agree it's unfortunate. But I think it's been a long time coming. With the lay offs, limited offerings, and they relied on Kickstarter to much in my Opinion. This likely is the best thing for Pebble.

Yeah I sorta feel the Apple Watch shoulda been more like a Pebble. It's simple, lasts a week (or more) and offloads all the CPU/battery intensive stuff to your phone.

The Apple Watch... I dunno. Should last at least a week and be simpler IMO. The design isn't all that elegant either (always looks a bit awkward IMO).

That's too bad as they were a clear innovator.
Pebble was no doubt first, but they quickly hit a wall technology-wise. There's only so much you can do with a watch focused on delivering notifications, when you lack the resources and engineering talent of Apple, Samsung or Google.

I like my pebble watch. The display is easy to read and it has excellent battery life and pebble was kind enough to ship me a free replacement when my first Watch developed screen problems. But the day it stops working is the day I spring for an Apple Watch of my own.
