Being left-handed, I've always worn my watch on the right. The idea being that it's not on the dominant hand, which is presumably why most wear it on their left.
Up until the Apple watch, that has always meant having the crown on the "wrong" side. But the AW recognizes its orientation (if that's automatic, that has to be some clever code) and flips everything vertically, allowing for the crown to still be on the proper side.
