The author of DeskCover loves to mention that it’s a HazeOver replacement. It’s actually a knock off. I don’t mind the competition, but it’s a wonky copycat down to UI layout, menus, description text and even a keyboard shortcut.

Please try out the original app instead and see for yourself that it actually helps:

I cannot recommend these enough:

- Alfred 3: this is a great Spotlight replacement. The powerpack is definitely worth it for those who like to automate actions on their Mac.
- Fantastical 2: best calendar/reminders app I have ever used. Period.
- Scroll Reverser: Free utility. Allows scrolling direction to be different on trackpads and mouses. Install it once and forget about it.
- IINA: Free open-source media player. While still in alpha, this app is as stable as QuickTime and reads any media file you throw at it. It supports the latest and greatest MacOS features (for instance, Picture in Picture). As it stands, the only missing feature is AirPlay support. Much better than VLC at this point.
- PDF Expert: I love preview. Still, this app just replaced it for viewing PDFs. Packed with advanced features (edit PDFs, search across multiple docs at the same time, split view, thumbnails view, and much more).

Nope, not ever used any of those, nor even a little bit feeling the need after hearing about them. Sounds like you want to be using a different desktop environment.

Enpass, Homebrew, Viscosity, Sublime Text, Thunderbird, Firefox. I know they're not really Mac specific but rather precisely so I have the same apps / environment I use on Linux and windows too.

And Ulysses and Tweetbot, which *are* Mac/iOS specific, which makes me sad sometimes.

Anything else I've forgotten because I'm not at my Mac right now... can't be that important.

"caffeinate" is also a built-in Terminal command. It will run until Ctrl-C (exit) or you can specify a timer.

Magnet yes but the rest are nothing special. Use Enpass for password manager as it's free. Why spend money, especially 10 bucks.

Password Managers store probably some of the most important information you are going to store on a computer. I'd rather pay money and go with a well established company like Agilebits than with a 'free' piece of software written by 'who knows what?'. Some things are worth spending money on. JMHI ;-)

You can spend money on the iOS version if you must!

Just out of curiosity, was this list recommended based on actual and repeated usage by MR writers of the chosen applications or is this a marketing and advertisement review article/posting? I'm not trying to sound snarky, I'm really curious. I now MR has started to partner with companies more to do giveaways and just wondered if review articles like this one were similar.

yeah, this is the new macrumors. full of pointless articles that are either masqueraded advertisements or just pointless filler when they don't have any serious content.

Keychain is free and from an established company :D

Never used Magnet, but I use BetterSnapTool. If you haven't used BetterTouchTool or BetterSnapTool, I would highly recommend. Makes my workflow much easier and more efficient.

Spectacle.

It started as a shortcut to get my maximize window functionality back, but I find it useful for re-arranging my windows when my desktop becomes too cluttered. Yes, I think BetterTouchTool can just remap, so if you use that, then this is probably not necessary.

That’s a good list. I use disk care every week to clean my Mac. And I use screenflow to record my screen.

i thought these were essential apps. I see five apps that aren't really that needed. useful, even amusing, but no more needed than apps like Mackeeper (but it turned into utter *****)
