I've been using Moom myself, and it's been flawless so far. Switched to it after experiencing issues with Magnet frequently crashing on High Sierra.

Just out of curiosity, was this list recommended based on actual and repeated usage by MR writers of the chose applications or is this a marketing and advertisement review article/posting? I'm not trying to sound snarky, I'm really curious. I now MR has started to partner with companies more to do giveaways and just wondered if review articles like this one were similar.

A good rule of thumb is that if they recommend any file cleaner apps there is a 99.9% chance it's in some way sponsored.

  • I love Bartender... been using it for years.
  • I prefer Moom over Magnet. It's much more functional and stable.
  • TextExpander is my number 1 "go to" app... it's saved me over 200K keystrokes since I installed it.
  • Redacted is another great utility for quickly redacting information from screen shots and other photo images.
  • Hyperdock is great for showing thumbnails of the active screen(s) for apps in your Dock... just by hovering over the icon in the dock.
  • OmniDiskSweeper for cleaning up disk space ... I do a lot of video editing with FCPx, and this makes cleaning up all of the backups and work files a snap.

None of these are on my list... What else ya got? These apps only bridge the gap, that a user can do themselves.

Bartender 3 may look good.

TotalFinder

Because Apple's too stupid to realize that cmd+x and cmd+v is the natural and RIGHT way to move files/folders around in the Finder. Plus, the app makes all 'cut' files/folders semi transparent give you confirmation through a visual cue of whats going to be moved.

I've used Bartender for years, and have had to uninstall Bartender 3. It's extremely buggy on High Sierra. I tried an alternate app called Vanilla, and it's even buggier.

As others have stated, 1Password, Alfred, Default Folder X, and Carbon Copy Cloner are all essential.

When you are cutting a file (windows, mac through TotalFinder), the file is actually copied and stays in the original folder until you paste it somewhere else. Cut > Move makes more sense than Copy > Paste. People just got used to the latter because.... windows

How is that different to Magnet? what do you mean by drawing on a grid?

Divvy gives you a little pop up grid that you can cursor over to size the window; it's useful in multi monitor setup start don't have an edge on one or more sides.

I've been using PathFinder for years. Back in my windows days, my file manager was Total Commander (originally "Windows Commander", until Redmond came after the developer.

I'm running Bartender in High Sierra and have experienced no issues, bugs or glitches. What, exactly, are you seeing?

Three apps I use all the time:

Get Plain Text

Automatically strips all formatting from text copied to the clipboard. Makes copy and paste much better.

BlockBlock

Warns and can block every time any software wants to install persistent software on your system. So its great at preventing malware and stuff that wants to track or monitor you.

A Better Finder Rename

Makers renaming lots of files really easy with very powerful tools and options

I would also mention the previously mentioned Popclip as being very useful.

The problem with this is it's the extra steps to resize it by squiggling a draw. It gets in the way. Magnet is better as it's less functional.

It depends on what you need. I have multiple monitors and snap too edge of screen doesn't work at the interface between the two

I'd add:
Foreversave - saves copy of file everytime you do a see so you have previous versions in case you mess up and delete stuff and then save without renaming

Default Folder X - excellant tool for navigating open / save dialog boxes and much more

The only "essential" Mac program is an alternative browser to Safari, since some sites will not work with Safari.
Exactly. Firefox, CCC, and 1Password fall in the 'essential' category, the apps listed in the story are at best nice-to-have. (I'd also include the gfortran compiler as essential, but that would give away how really old I am!)

Although I run 2 of the five listed in the first post and a bunch of the others listed in the comments, the three I really use a lot...
Little Snitch
1Password
Carbon Copy Cloner

Magnet with Keyboard shortcuts allows you to move windows very quickly to left, right, top, bottom, corner etc, and even across onto the second screen. It is superb. I disable the "drag" behaviour in Magnet because it is so annoying and too easy to accidentally trigger it. But the keyboard shortcuts (customisable) are rock solid and very useful indeed with a multi-display set up.
I don't know how i lived without it for 10 years!

Wrong.

In every application, cut/paste (move!) is cmd+x and cmd+v. Only Apple, in their typical stubborn boneheaded ways, is this somehow a total mystery to them. Might as well stick to a single button hockey puck mouse if you wanna follow their train of though on this one.

Unclutter... you know youre not actually SOLVING the clutter, right? Youre just moving it. To a proprietary app, that will probably start charging a monthly fee down the line, or you cant get your clutter back.
...Actually, maybe that IS a clever solution after all.

Good question. Apps were chosen by us, and all apps in future videos and posts similar to this will also be selected by us.

For CCC, you can also try SuperDuper. Firefox is amazing browser made better with uBlock Origin.

Try this:
Open word processor > Insert some text > cut it > override the clipboard with another item. Result: text is gone

Open TotalFinder > cut file > override the clipboard with another item. Result: the file is kept in the original place. If the file were cut, shouldn’t it disappear?

No matter what you call it, when you cut a file, you are actually coping it with an instruction to remove it from the original folder if you happen to do a subsequent action. This is the behavior of TotalFinder. This is the behavior of windows.
To me that’s more confusing than giving the instruction in the subsequent action itself.

It's been months now since I've run it, but if I recall correctly, icons were jumping between the two states, sometimes they'd move around, change order etc. I've just updated to the latest version and started it again. I'll keep using it and see if the issues have been resolved.
