CheatSheet looks nice, but then asks full control of your Mac. Not good. No way!

Great list. Just curious: What do you use Chronosync for that you can't do with Carbon Copy Cloner? I own CCC, but wondering if I'm missing out on something.

I’m not who you asked, but I also use Chronosync. I use it to keep two different Macs in sync automatically; a friend does the same, but his second Mac is remotely located at his summer home. When I make changes to one, the other is updated. I also use Chronosync to back up various external drives onto other various and off-site but web-connected backup drives. In short, CCC is great for straight clone backups. But Chronosync is better for “complex” and remote syncing/backups.

Preview - although it’s built into macOS, it’s got this great Instant Alpha feature to remove white space. Infinitely easier and more intuitive than Photoshop, I was mega impressed when I stumbled on it. Not sure if you’ve covered it already but it’s definitely worth checking out.

Hey bud! This is a great tip, I never knew that. I did a search for a tutorial and it was using an older version of preview - where do you invoke the instant alpha tool from now? My selection is only giving me magic wand - I presume I need to have a png which contains transparency?

I am very disheartened by the negative comments. Is this a sign of our times? Fer heavens sakes these suggestions are offered with the intent to broaden our knowledge of what's available to, maybe, help some Mac Users. Sure, many apps might only appeal to a small subset of readers. If you don't need the app, don't use it. I am delighted with "Cheat" and hope this negativism won't discourage future postings of nifty apps. The comments above remind me of the story of an old man on the beach with his grandson. A large wave comes in a washes the child out to sea. At this point the old man looks skyward as exclaims: God, please I implore you, return my Grandson to me! There's a sudden clap of thunder and a bolt of lightning and another large wave rolls in, carrying his Grandson safely to the beach. The old man hugs his Grandson with joy, looks skyward and exclaims: But, he was wearing a hat!

This! These lists are very good. To be fair, I am not interested in most apps here, but one suggestion is enough to make them worth it

I’ll have to send you steps when I’m home. But if memory serves, download an item, any picture at all. After selecting the standard edit, click the wand looking icon at the top (second across I think).

Then you click some white space and click & drag upwards with your mouse. The white space will turn redder to indicate which white it will remove. Then press backspace/delete to get rid of that.

Going on memory, drop me a message around 6PM if my steps are poor and I’ll send you a GIF/PM with screenshots when I’m back from work :)

I love CheatSheet for showing me all the possible keyboard shortcuts. It’s so handy.
Love it as well.
Use Sip too once in a while, it's good.

So many great small apps, out there. Especially outside app-store.
Thanks to all small devs :)

I also use both apps for the reasons you say. CCC is great for creating and maintaining bootable clones, but it won't sync two computers (i.e., propagate changes to any subset of folders/files bi-directionally). ChronoSync does that well. I used to use FoldersSynchronizer for this, but it seems not to work properly with High Sierra and APFS.

BTW, although I'm not particularly interested in the apps listed in the story, it sparked posts mentioning apps that I hadn't heard of that I may check out.

Ah yep, you're right that is how it works now - thanks!

Yeah I was amazed, stumbled on it by accident. It's infinitely more intuitive than doing it in Photoshop.

As a side note, I bleeding hate Photoshop in general. Some people "get" it, with all those layers and editing - it just doesn't click with how my brain works and the simplest things seem mega frustrating. That's more a me problem than an Adobe problem though.

I tried several note apps, but I always come back to OneNote. I know its a Microsoft app, but it works great and works on all my devices and most importantly my iPad and Pencil.

Thanks for doing this MR it's hard to find new apps these days because there are so many. I make websites and videos, I'm always on the lookout for ways to boost productivity and create efficient workflows. So please keep tossing out new apps!

Just for the record, these Mac apps were all independently picked and used by us.

We don't accept suggestions for these lists from app developers or companies, and our lists are in no way paid advertisements. If you don't like these suggestions, definitely point us in the direction of some good Mac apps -- we're doing these lists because it's not always easy to find useful Mac apps. Would love to hear from you guys.

1, An app that stops my Mac logging out of everything all the time.
2, An app that can download any video from any website with one click.
3, An app that can eradicate any memory of Ive.

Thank you for this insightful addition to this thread. It really helped.

The funny part is that if you bothered to read the posts, you would have found a solution to #2.

Microsoft Office 365, Scrivener, Todoist, Aeon Timeline, Evernote, Coda 2, and Xcode are all must-haves but fairly obvious.

Scapple for mind-mapping.
Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer for a replacement for Photoshop.
Steam for gaming.
Yummy FTP Pro for, uh, FTP.
Paprika Recipe Manager for recipes.
ReadKit for RSS feeds.
Wordpress for editing Wordpress sites.

Those are the ones off the top of my head. Great thread! Let's keep it going.

HA!!!! Affinity Photo is a viable alternative, but it might be too viable in this case, it also has layers, etc.

You could look into Pixelmator perhaps?

My votes go for a lot that help with common issues you read in the forum, though they’re not so much productivity apps like these are. They’re all free.

Boxer - really intuitive version of DOSBOX for playing legacy games.

This has not been updated in 2 years. I think its abandoned project.

[Edit: this is also at the bottom of their app description in the App Store. They definitely need to find a clearer way of labeling their IAP, because as it's phrased now it definitely sounds like a subscription. Thanks for pointing this out!]

If true, this totally changes my opinion of the app... I've been eyeing it as something that might be useful to me, but I have a pretty strict "policy" against paying for anything with a subscription. If it's not a subscription, but it's a one time purchase then I may give it a shot. I don't mind having to pay again a year later to "upgrade" to additional features, as long as it's optional and those features don't go away in a year.

I have a rational understanding of the value of an app-- I don't mind paying real money for a useful app. I just refuse to get on a treadmill under the threat of losing what I've already paid for.

I entirely agree and I also avoid the subscription model. I also am happy to pay once for something and get paid upgrades as I see fit, but constantly paying for something just makes no sense to me and is utterly unsustainable. I do not want subscription and I do not want free, I just want a fair one off price for a given feature set. I've been trying the app for a couple of weeks and was surprised when I read this article and went back to check.

So far, Agenda seems very good and I only struggle with not needing any of the premium features. I feel I want to pay for the app anyway and probably will do so. Maybe they'll add a premium feature I find useful within the year!

I use Chronosync for backing up photos/documents on a daily basis to multiple drives. In the old days I would manually drag images from disk to disk as I once had a problem with a backup program that didn't sync everything for some reason.

Chronosync is awesome for worry free backup of different folders etc. I really don't use it to the full potential as there are a ton of features. I probably use it for 5% of what it can do. The new version also has new setup assistant that is a lot easier for people starting out.

I use CCC for backing up disk images or to make bootable drives. I got CCC way before Chronosync and Chronosync does that too.

I am glad to support these two developers and feel guilty that Chronosync has free updates for life. I backup 5-20 gb of images a day and love Chronosync.

Cheatsheet reminds of the awkward keyboard symbols that chronically (decades) plague MacBooks. Does a upward exponential sign mean the shift key or the esc key or the shift 6 key? What on earth is a backslash with itty bitty tails and a minus sign? Would it pain Apple software writers too much to alter the menu choices with better clues? Would it pain Apple hardware designers too much to put these crazy symbols on the keyboards? Surely the Apple people know these symbols by heart, but the occasional user doesn't! Why is an app like Cheatsheet even necessary? Seriously, Apple people need to sit behind ordinary users and find out what the frustrations are.

Call Recorder for Facetime or Skype from Ecamm.com!!

I love this app for facetime. It records split screen or single end of facetime calls on mac. I have some treasured video of family members who live in distant lands.

I also like ecamm Phoneview as I can offload voicemails, photos etc. independent of itunes backup. It really allows you to dig deep into your iphone.

For web browsing privacy I also really like cookie and wifispoof.

Almost forgot: KEYBOARD MAESTRO from https://www.keyboardmaestro.com/main/

i cannot live without the combo of textexpander, alfred and keyboard maestro.

they really automate repetitive tasks. i use textexpander for shortcuts of common used words/phrases, alfred for multi item clip board as well as awesome workflows that allow me to activate/deactivate apps/group of apps via function keys. and keyboard maestro is amazing for a ton of macros.
