I have to recommend Hazmat Hijinks. It’s a really awesome indie game. It’s like the old Chips Challenge. Very challenging, no hints, very clever ideas. It’s the kind of thing you play a little each day and come back when you’re ready to think.

The versus play on Dr. Mario is a welcome mechanic. New characters, and assistance are helpful. You WILL get stuck at some point, and likely blow through five attempts and need to let the phone rest for a little bit, which is a good thing.

There is variation every time a level loads, making it a bit more difficult or easy as you go on. I'm on level 119 after a few days. Didn't get a three star rating on a level til somewhere after the first twenty. It starts ramping up. I've probably had dozens of levels I've been stuck on. Try, try again. Not a penny of IAP required.

I have a super tough time finding iOS games I like. I want a game that's fun and I can jump into on a moment's notice and jump right back out again. And I don't want it to have some complicated in-game currency system, or require me to pay-to-win to get past certain levels.

Dr. Mario has always been a match-four. This app is the first time it has been a match-three.

It actually has been messing me up because I tried to go back to my Dr. Mario cart shortly after the app launched and I keep trying to match three instead of four. Gah.

Yeah these are pathetic choices.

My current faves:
- Crashlands
- Alto’s Odyssey
- XCOM Enemy Within
- Grid Autosport
- Pocket City
- Bloons TD6
- Minecraft

Except for Bloons, they are pay once and play. The IAPs In Bloons can easily be ignored, it’s really fun without.

Yeah I just started Crashlands a few days ago and it's pretty good so far.

In my recent history:
Evoland 2 (you don't need to play 1)
Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition
Cat Quest (Despite the name, fun action RPG with a lot of cat puns)
Ember
GrimValor
Battleheart 2 (Battleheart Legacy from a few years back is excellent)

All pay once and you're done.

The only game I really play on iOS is Dominations.
Typical F2P, but unlike so many other games in that genre, it's very well balanced, no comic style, battery saving 2D isometric view, includes some interesting historic backgrounds, although the game itself isn't historically accurate of course.
There's no need to invest money and those people who invest money will level up a little quicker, but in battles you're always matched according your level, so there's no classic pay2win.

Also, I think there's a full version of Tropico released of iOS, but never played that...

I think when you're applying to a job where you write for the public, you should be asked if you understand when to use "addictive" and "addicting", and immediately disqualified if you don't.

What a disappointing list of freemium IAP trash.

Here's some of my current favorites that are a one-time upfront purchase:

Rogue Cards
Scalak
LVL
Cosmic Express (this one will really hurt your brain after 20 levels or so)
Card Crawl
Meteorfall
