Why, why, seriously Apple, leave more trace behind us, so if my phone got stolen or Apple data center got hacked, then all those recordings will be accessible.

Please, can some charitative soul, confirm if you can edit a misstyped number, instead of deleting all the previous numbers?. Thank you. That is the main feature for me after 18 IOS versions... (well, the last version that allowed that was like 8 years ago...)

The ”new” iOS 18 features are so retarded. It’s like Apple is trying to push the envelope on how far they can get by introducing absolute trash.

Exactly. My phone in the 90s did this. When you're hard pressed to sell new hardware I guess you have to bend the truth a little bit.
Sometimes it’s also absurd to realise tech world nowadays recycle what already happened back in the day, repackage it, and tout it as “brand new feature” ”innovative“, almost as if people‘s alleged “gold fish attention span” also expand to memories. It’s just disgusting.

It would be a bit more plausible if Apple says “we revamped this feature in the past to make it much better” etc.

What are the options today? I'd like to be able to record calls without having to put them on speaker and record the audio with my iPad. This is one capability I really miss from my Android days.

I live in a state with one-party consent, so I'm not legally required to inform the other person(s).
Use TapeACall Pro or Rev Call Recorder. TapeACall Pro costs money and Rev only costs money for transcription services. But both good apps.

T9 dialling and Call recording are very useful features.
T9 is long overdue. Should’ve been in the iOS 1 phone app back when T9 dialling was still quite popular. But I suppose 18 years is “better late than never“ huh.

Call recording like this would be a bit more useful if the announcement can be disabled. But at the same time if they don’t announce, people’s going to be furious when they finds out iPhone can record any conversation without consent. Attracts lawsuits as well.

I need to be able to turn that call recording notification off. My ISP is always trying to screw me over and they think they're the only ones that can record a call! I'm gonna get those scum bags.
With TapeACall Pro it's a beep when it starts recording the phone call. I don't know what Rev Call Recorder does when it starts recording a phone call.

I don't understand why anyone would do this when all you have to do is say, "Siri, call Eric Slivka". That's a lot easier than pecking at numbers.
I will, once Siri doesn't call the wrong person 50% of the time. Siri can really do this, assuming that it understands the names, which it doesn't always. It depends on type of name, background noise, and unknown other factors whether Siri gets it right. I have some names in my contact list that Siri never understands.

I personally don’t do phone calls but those seem like nice additions.

Not sure why a lot of these features are hidden behind the annoying „AI“ term nowadays though. Back in the day it would simply be called „feature enhancement“, automations or a „If“ „else“ command

Don’t think so! Just tried but there is no long press or anything to move to a different position in the digits you typed

When does the warning of recording get played?

If I ring a company, and get held on their switchboard, could/would the warning play before a real human answers?

And I live in the UK where I believe I can legally record calls without permission or warning. (For personal purposes. Warning required by companies recording all calls, etc.) Shouldn't I be able to switch off the warning?

What does call recording have with any kind of "AI"? Afaik Android phones have been able to do this since forever...

I'm wondering the same thing. I'm most likely to record a call when ringing a company, so the warning message would likely play over the top of the menu/hold music.
:)

I'm also wondering what happens if the other end is some sort of voice activated system! So your warning message could select absolutely anything depending how the system interprets it. Or force divert to a human operator. Or, well, who knows what?

The Phone app doesn't often get updated, but with iOS 18 and Apple Intelligence, it's getting a major overhaul that includes one of the best new features in the iOS 18 software.

This guide highlights everything new with the Phone app.

Record Phone Calls (Apple Intelligence)

After placing or answering a call on an iPhone running iOS 18, you can initiate a recording that gives you an audio copy of the call.

ios-18-1-call-recording-1.jpg

  1. Open the Phone app.
  2. Make a call.
  3. Tap on the record button in the top left corner to start a recording.
When you tap on the record button, everyone on the call is informed that the call is being recorded through an audible message. The message repeats for each person that is recording, so if two iPhone users are on a call and both record, the message will play twice.

There is no confirmation dialogue when a call is being recorded, so someone who does not want to be recorded would need to hang up the call as there is no opt out.

While the call is in progress, audio is recorded and saved to the Notes app for later access. When you open up the Notes app, you'll see a Call Recording labeled with the date and the time with an option to tap on Play to repeat the call or to tap into the note for more information.

Transcribe and Summarize Phone Calls (Apple Intelligence)

Calls that are saved in the Notes app are automatically transcribed, so you can see a full transcription of what was said on the call. You can get to a transcription by tapping into a Call Recording note.

As you listen to the call, the transcript will update so you can read along with what's being said.

Transcriptions have a "Summary" button so you can get a quick summary of what was said in the call, plus there is a search option for searching for key words and phrases.

Transcripts can be added to a different note, or copied, and the audio can be saved to the Files app or shared.

Search Call History

In iOS 18, Apple added a search feature for the Recents tab, which means you can now search through all of your incoming and outgoing calls and voicemails.

  1. Open up the Phone app.
  2. Tap on the Recents tab.
  3. Search for the person or number you're looking for with the search bar at the top of the interface.
You can type in phone numbers or names to see calls that have been placed, received, or missed, and contacts that have the name or phone number you're searching for.

Along with name or phone number, you can search for the date of a call, the type of call (such as FaceTime), or use multiple search parameters. If you wanted to see all calls from Eric in June, for example, you could type in "Eric" tap the name when it comes up to set the parameter, and then add in "June" to the search bar.

There are options to "See All" calls and voicemails when conducting a search to view more results.

Swap SIM cards

If you have two SIMs on your iPhone, such as for personal and work purposes, you can swap between them using a Control Center toggle. In prior versions of iOS, you had to change numbers using the Settings app.

To swap numbers, open up Control Center, navigate to the connectivity controls, and long press on Cellular Data.

Contact Suggestions

When you start typing in a number with the Keypad in iOS 18, you'll see a list of contacts so you can quickly get to who you want to call.

Type in the first digit or two of a number and then tap on the "More" icon to see all of your options. You can tap one from there to dial.

T9 Dialing

Related to the contact suggestion feature, you can actually search for names instead of numbers using T9 characters. If you have a contact in your phone under "Eric," you can type in 3 for E, 7 for R, 4 for I, and 2 for C, and the contact card for Eric will pop up.

T9 dialing dates back to the days before touchscreens, allowing smartphone users to type using predictive text that associated numbers with letters. The iPhone has not supported T9 dialing until now.

Apple Intelligence Release Info

Call recording, transcribing, and summarizing are Apple Intelligence features that will be available in iOS 18.1. Recording phone calls won't be available in the initial iOS 18 update that comes out alongside the iPhone 16 models, but it should be introduced to the public in an October update.

Using Apple Intelligence will require an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or an iPhone 16.

So Apple is adding long time needed functionality now when they need to compete with potential apps that will replace the base one

What? Why is Apple Intelligence needed to record a call?
Its the overuse of the term AI here. We think of AI as learning and improving on its own. This is using programming to record a call, then using programming to transcribe speech to text. At no point will this improve on its own without someone getting involved and making programming changes.

My biggest concern is we haven't heard what encryption, if any, is being used here to secure data. Even if it is on the device, other companies have gotten in a heap of trouble for doing this without thinking of security.

"you can initiate a recording that gives you an audio copy of the call" oh good. Zero reason to worry about local laws.... record the call and then do what you want with it... a great feature Apple!

I find it quite baffling that, even in the year 2024, it’s still not possible to perform a simple task like correcting a mistyped digit in a phone number within the telephone app. If you enter the wrong country code, you have to delete everything and re-enter the entire number.

Good.. Now just give me an option to delete ONLY 474 calls from my wife at once. 3 hrs ago I went to work and there are already 12 calls from her. To be true, I loved Samsung only for this feature.

Apple Intelligence is not required to record and transcribe audio calls or voice recordings. Stop with the misinformation, Macrumors. You can do better.
