For the love of everything that’s holy - allow video conferencing apps like Zoom and Teams to still use camera while in the background.

The missing secondary monitor support is really really bad. Happy that the article mentioned it. iPad screen turning off and controlling external screen with mouse should be easy to develop.

For multiuser functionality, at least a guest account should be there with basic apps.

How about when my iPad boots up I get a screen that lets me choose to run iPad OS or MacOS?
Boom! Now I only need ONE computer a iPad! Even better my iPad can switch between iPad OS or MacOS on the fly!
I know I'm dreaming.

How about a camera that doesn't switch off when you multitask? It seems to me that if the iPad is going to be at all useful as a working tool especially during these times when everyone is working from home, you need to be able to have a video conference while you do something else, like take notes.

And no FaceTime doesn't count because it's not prevalent in the business world.

iPad will never become a competent computer replacement, unless MacOS & iPadOS merge. which will probably happen with the ARM architecture, in 2-3 years.

I got ur point but I totally disagree with merging. Its a very bad move.

The “App Library” and widgets things seem super weird that they’re not on the iPad. They seem useless to me, but for whatever reason apple likes them, so it’s weird they’re not on iPad.

I just want the text selection magnifying glass back. That’s all I want.

When did that go away? I remember that, and...yeah, it’s missing now, and I don’t know why.

The weather app !

yeah, I reman baffled by why there’s any basic iOS programs like these missing from iPad.

even just dropping the existing programs are without modifying the display would be useful. I’ve long since taken to using Bing as my calculator on iPad since there isn’t one.

Of that list, the ones that should be developed are full-screen second monitor (it’s ridiculous now) and multi-user. The rest don’t make sense from a UX perspective. Widgets are already on the left bar of the iPad, so you don’t need to mess up the app grid with all the problems that it causes. Plus it’s not a device for quick glances like an iPhone.

And luckily we won’t get all that Mac-iPad toaster-refrigerator merge because-apple-doesn’t-want-to-cannibalize or multi-float window support. I think that has been already discussed by Apple many times and clearly it’s no because of cannibalization.

Apple should release a Mac tablet. iOS is a limited jailed-sandboxed toy without an accesible file system and lacking a full-fledged USB port among other shocking limitations.

Uhh.. someone may have said already but in some apps the iPad does go full screen when plugged into a tv, it just can’t when it’s mirroring for obvious reasons.

Use it in photos and you can get full screen previews. Lumafusion does the same. There isn’t really an elegant solution to have full screen from a 4:3 interface on a 16:9 display. Even if it was extended, what would it show you on the external display when you’re on the Home Screen?

I used to think that. But then I recnetly tried it out on the iPhone and was surprised at how many of my neatly organized apps never get used and actually do belong in a “junk bin”.

Now my phone is one home screen with 6 apps and 2 stacked widgets. I can access all my regularly used apps easily and the rest are all hidden away. I didnt think this was a good feature but now I look at my overly organized iPad and it looks like a mess.
Same here. One screen with a two 2x2 stacked widgets. One for music and photos the other for calendar and reminders. A 2 x4 siri suggestion widget that feeds me my regularly used apps. That leaves 4 fixed apps and the dock for things I know I always want available. Everything else I access from apps library. For me it’s so much better than all these years of organising stuff into folders.

From ”never” to ”in 2-3 years” in the space of a single sentence. Impressive backtracking.

You should be on medication 😂

There's also no option to shut off the iPad's display when using an attached monitor, which is distracting

I can shut off my iPad's display using the cover. I close the cover than pressing a key on my bluetooth keyboard I can activate only the monitor. Sure is not possibile using the magic keyboard.

Off the top of my head:

- Better screen estate management, no more blown-up iPhone apps
- Fully customisable keyboard shortcuts
- Better multitasking, split screen and window in window interactions
- F-row and fn key on the magic keyboard
- Weather and calculator
- Multiuser and extended display support, you already have

Also: App library is useless

The thing is, Apple should’ve learned this from macOS. At least with macOS, they had a valid excuse. 128K with a bit mapped display was already using a lot of RAM.

With the iPhone and iPad, there was no such rationale. Likewise, given its macOS X origins, iOS should’ve inherited much of it.

On a recent episode of Accidental Tech Podcast John Siracusa and Marco Arment addressed the multi-user question for iOS/iPad OS and basically it boiled down to it would take a major rewrite of a significant amount of the OS to do this due to having incurred so much tech debt from its origins as a single user OS.

Text selection that actually works (and both on iPadOS and iOS). You know, like the Loupe that used to work perfectly but then was dropped?

Actual movable windows for multitasking! And better drag and drop where you don’t have to wait holding it down, to then drag and then wait etc etc etc

Multiple users would be good too.

Maybe more of an actual iOS feature but more default apps, like I’d prefer Photoshop to be my default editor etc.

Not sure how would be best to implement, but I’d like to be able to create ‘shortcuts’ to say a file and put it on the Home Screen for quick access. That would also mean unlocking the icon grid so we could have more of a desktop on the iPad. I get sick of apps including Files and Dropbox refreshing after I’ve been using another app for 10 seconds and then I have to find my file lost in a nest of folders!

Give me Xcode and a way to build apps on the ipad. Then I will consider it a pro device. Until then its just an expensive toy (no matter the 'Pro' demonicer)
Is the only profession occupation a programmer? Can other professionals not use an iPad? What a daft comment.

It is a fully fledged USB port, and you can access the file system. It’s not a Mac but neither is it a toy. It excels over a Mac in some situations, and a Mac is preferable in others. But it’s ok if you don’t understand that. Some people are frightened of change.
