Please visit iClarified.com. Your bootrom does not restrict downgrade to 3.1.3. I know this because I've downgraded two iPhone 3G's for friends this week.

Essentially, you shift-click-restore then use the zip file iRestore to kick it out of reboot cycle. Easy stuff.

Before you try that, go into Spotlight under Settings and uncheck all of those. Then hold power and home for one minute until the Apple logo appears twice.

3G fix (so far)

My daughter has a 3G & I gave my wife my old 3G when I got my new 4. Both 3G's were performing terribly with the new IOS4. I tried a couple of things that I read in forums & finally did a COMPLETE Restore (after backing up) on both phones. They seem to be working fine now. The only symptom apparent is that boot up is a bit slow but all the other problems I was aware of are gone.

I found a fix that worked for me

I had horrible performance issues with my 3G after upgrading to 4.0 and then to 4.0.1. I found a tip which worked wonders for me:

  1. Turn off Spotlight Search: Go to Settings | General | Home Button | Spotlight Search, and uncheck everything
  2. Reboot your iPhone 3G: Just a normal power down and restart
  3. Turn Spotlight Search back on: Go back to same screen as step 1, and re-check everything you unchecked in Step 1

Hi guys,

Just wanted to post a quick update. We have listened to your feedback and do agree, it was a bit in 'poor taste' to accept donations to switch to Android. The whole site was done in frustration to a lack of support and help from our service provider and Apple and we just thought it would be fun to have a "donate" button.

But the donations are not what made us set the site up and you guys clearly made us aware that it was overshadowing what we are trying to do, and that is to ensure big companies, like Apple, are accountable to their paying customers.

So we won't be keeping any donations. All funds will go do charity. Details are here if you're interested: http://www.forsakenbyapple.com/2010/08/donations-will-all-go-to-charity.html

Thanks again for your thoughts and feedback.

When I was at the apple genius bar the guy told me to turn off spotlight search and the iPhone 3G will act normal.

I had already gone back to 3.1.3 so i couldn't try for myself. ...I was having wifi issue after going from ios 4.0 to 4.0.1. They gave me a new 3G iPhone w/ 3.1.3 on it (phone was no longer under warranty, and no I don't have AppleCare) so I am very happy w/apple's customer service! Now I can wait until I'm eligible for full discount to upgrade to iPhone 4

arg! the forum keeps auto logging me out when i try to reply!

anyway, just wanted to report that despite many success stories i've heard, my phone still regularly slows to a crawl, even with spotlight off and after rebooting.

my data also cut out again today. if i notice its not working i've found i can cycle the "cellular data" toggle in the preferences to get it up and running again. but i gotta say, thats still a pretty annoying to hassle to just "live with" on a near daily basis for the remainder of my contract. especially when, if i *don't* explicitly check that its working, i can go an entire day without any work emails reaching my phone.

i dunno what what can be done though - everyone i know locally who has an iphone on fido seems to be having this problem, be it a 3gs or 3g, ios4 or os3...
