I am speaking from personal experience, YMMV. When I upgraded to 4.1 and jailbroke, I did not have TU running (because I didn't care about the bb) and the upgrade 'failed' with a 1013. I searched on here and saw to use TU to kick it out of this state. When I was all done, I looked at my bb and it had not been upgraded. I always attributed this to the TU changing the host file. Perhaps not.

Post #7, you just need to do the opposite on step #6 (MAC) OR step #5 (PC).
Thank you. So basically I just remove the # sign from in front of every line with gs.apple.com in it, restore and allow my bb to update and then go back in and add those lines again if I want to preserve my bb again in the future, right?
If you used to edit your host file before, you might need to take out the number as well. I think the original file doesn't have any number in there just "gs.apple.com" but I'm not 100% sure.
There's a better step-by-step instruction on iclarified that you can follow. I don't have the link but you can search there.
Also, editing host file is not just to preserve bb but to be able to downgrade to older fw.
