Facebook will buy FlappyBird for a couple of billions next week.

Or this guy can just wait and save all his cash and in a couple of years buy Facebook and call it FlappyBook. Then he can enter the stock market under FLAP. Then why not come out with an iPhone competitor, the FlappyPhone, the only phone you can now play FlappyBird on. Then comes the Flappy tablet, Flappy watch, and Flappy search engine...etc. And don't forget MacRumors sister site, FlappyRumors.

The guy is an idiot.

People saying he is a genius for this marketing ploy should never go in to business, sorry harsh but true.

He removes his app when it was making around $50,000 a day I believe and was the biggest craze though cant see why >.> and ended up getting media attention which if the product was unique and important would lead to massive demand, but this is neither. Second hand phone sales benefitted but he hasnt.

All he has done is stop a source of revenue for himself and instead of getting all the money he can and working to develop Flappy Bird 2 which is most likely going to come has left the door wide open for not only copycats but the next big thing.

Its like Angry Birds, it was like huge then it just went oh >.> you still play that ?

Doubt this is a PR stunt -- if it was, it'd be the dumbest business move yet.

Consider this -- right before he took it offline, it was earning 50k/day and was already at the top of the charts. He removed it, and lost revenue during that time. Clones are now bountiful, with hyphenated names, etc to evade the ban. So now he has direct competition, lost significant money while the app was offline, and really didn't gain much of anything from the PR angle, since he was already at the top of the charts.

Don't think this is a PR stunt. Anything he releases now will only be downhill from his previous success.

I really don't get why people in this thread are saying this is a marketing stunt. It's been pretty obvious to me that Nguyen doesn't care about the money. When he pulled the app he was making $50,000 a day. When he eventually puts it back, nobody is going to care because the hype is gone and all the clones that have subsequently popped up in its absence. The culture of addicting games in Asia is very bad, and he hated the publicity. There's no reason to doubt he pulled it for the reasons he stated.

If it's a marketing stunt, it's a poor one.

when you are making 50,000 a day you dont care about publicity.

Ah, I'm going to miss all those thousands of dollar ads for iPhones with Flappy Bird installed on it. I really wonder if people were actually dumb enough to pay those prices just to have it. If they did, I'd bet they certainly would not admit it.

Oh course NOT

But it makes for GREAT internet stories for people who cannot tell the difference between someone setting any price and the actual value of something.

Knew the whole thing was a publicity stunt,

then you knew wrong

I'm getting really tired seeing Flappy Bird on the front page of macrumors. I thought iOS Blog was where stuff about iOS is posted.

Ever since they started allowing mobile news on this Mac news site it's been going downhill.

Personally I wish MacRumors would return to focusing on Mac only. This iPhone malarkey isn't going anywhere!

And hopefully we won't read anymore about it here.

Nah, it's a story that keeps getting lots of ad hits and lots of comments. We're going to see at least three more news stories about it.

1) Flappy Bird Return Date Announced!

2) Flappy Bird is Once Again on App Store!

3) Interview with Flappy Bird Creator about Return to App Store!

I wouldn't be surprised if there were more. Seems this developer can't open his mouth without getting news stories about it here and elsewhere, even if he says absolutely nothing new.

1) I never even heard of this game or this guy before he announced he was pulling the game from the app store. The announcement absolutely got him more downloads.

2) He was still making his $50,000+ a day while the app was pulled, from everyone who still had it on their phones. He didn't lose any money pulling his app, he just gained more attention.

3) Now, when he brings it back, everyone who couldn't get it before it was pulled will scramble to get it then, right around the time when interest in the game from existing players will probably be waning.

The guy managed to get his app all over the news, he's keeping it there with his various stunts (his statements seem pretty well-timed to keep a buzz going over as long a time as possible), and he keeps making money. Seems like pretty good choices to me. Let's not forget that he announced he was pulling it, instead of just pulling it. That gave people time to download it after hearing the news.

You are right, ironically he removed the app because he and the app was getting too much attention! Something tells me he loves the attention.

He was still making 50k a day from people who had installed the game prior to pulling it. By announcing he was going to pull it, instead of simply just pulling it, he got more people to download the game before it was pulled, thus he probably made more than 50k a day during this time as a result. And he's been keeping his name in the news this entire time, despite his claims that he's not interested in the attention.

I am tired of the Flappy stories, but no one is forcing you to subscribe to Push. btw, has anyone ever brought up a feature request for disabling Mac/iOS blog stories and just getting Front Page stuff?

I didn't say anybody was forcing me to. In fact, that's why I specified that it was an issue because I am subscribed, I knew if I didn't say that then somebody would come along telling me off for moaning about the ridiculous amount of attention MR is giving to this game.

I want to be subscribed to push notifications but I do not appreciate Flappy bird being on my screen all the time.

You can change your subscription preferences on the push page.

He's really milking this free marketing for as long as he can. Just put the game or don't. Stop making so many preemptive announcements about announcements.

So he gets all this publicity for releasing the game, more publicity when he announces it will be taken off the App Store and even MORE publicity when he announces it's coming back! I don't understand this guy at all.
