I would buy one...

There is a lot of negative posts in this thread but I think that the no screen idea is not bad. It would reduce the size and increase the battery life of the thing. When I use my mini I almost always just pick it up, select shuffle songs, and put it in my pocket. The iPod Shuffle sounds cool to me. I see it with only one button. A big play button. Press once to start playing random songs, hold down for a few seconds to turn off. If something like that came out I would buy it right away. I would be more excited about it if it doesn't have a screen.
In short,
HOORAY FOR SCREENLESS iPOD SHUFFLE!!!!

I for one almost never look at my mini's screen while I'm working out - I almost always listen to a "workout" mix....in shuffle mode! The same when I'm walking around the city. Shuffle is the most popular mode of play - that's why apple added as an option on the main menu screen.

So im guessing by the sloggan life is random this new ipod just plays your songs in some random order with no control

It's pretty difficult to recover any data off of flash memory that has been deleted. At best you might be able to come up with the filenames of the files, if anything at all.

No it's not difficult at all. Any serious digicam user should have a copy of Photorecovery handy.

It's amazing and shocking what you can recover from your Flash memory. I can't imagine any serious iPod guard letting you get away with deleted images, that can be recovered in the blink of an eye, even if the card is formatted in the camera.

We cannot show the images of the new iPod because we were forced to delete them from our cameras, but we can describe it. It is without any screen (that's maybe because the slogan is "Life is random!"), small, with a shape more vertical than the other iPod. The color is white, and it seems like a small remote control that fits confortably in a single hand.

Yeah, whatever!

There are ways of retrieving deleted images from memory cards I'm sure. I think Apple would have asked them to surrender the card itself. And if they did in fact see images of the the new music player, they would be able to give a description more detailed than "It is without any screen, small, with a shape more vertical than the other iPod. The color is white, and it seems like a small remote control that fits confortably in a single hand.".

'There is no screen' is just a repeat of every rumor site out there right now. The iPod mini 'fits comfortably in the single hand' as well ya know. The color is white! Whoa! There's some in-depth recon. going on there.

Did I tell everyone about the affair I had with Julia Roberts? There was a naughty video made, but her lawyers made me give it back. But I swear it happened, I just don't have any proof.

A flash iPod with no screen which plays tracks at random is a stroke of genius.

Cheap, robust, minimalist, battery life, and won't erode the market for other iPods.

I think Apple has a winner here.

BEST! POST! EVER!!!!

I looked it up. Below is some of what people were saying just before and after the original announcement 10/23/01, I've omitted the names to protect the people that might have a foot in their mouth. Notice the last line in the 6th item from the bottom "Do I really need ALL my songs ALL the time?" ... maybe that's what this new thing is about ... maybe with it's own playlist in iTunes ... just a thought ... anyway have fun reading!
..........

the painful reality is that the market wants to move down on price and up on features [exactly what is causing the current bloodletting in the 'wintel' world] and if apple could just come out with a product that was appealing [which they do every three months] and priced well out of the gate [which never happens] then the market might recognize the innovations for what they really are. but that initial sticker shock will forever keep people away. or at least at bay until mikey or billy repackages it and cuts the price in half. thereby hamstringing the funding for future innovation.

BINGO!

Why create a device that will compete and take sales from the Mini? That's just silly. This little wonder will do 3 things. 1) bring in those who are too cheap or not convinced they need an iPod 2) make those people buy iTunes songs and eventually need a big brother for their iPod 3) Sell even more stuff to those who already have iPods, but could use a rugged, "I don't worry as much about this iPod" iPod.

Apple is not doing this to give the masses the same great stuff the iPod offers for next to nothing. They want more sales and more customers, and this little guy will probably stomp the flash based market and bring in tons of customers for Apple. Potential iPod and Mac customers.

I'm sorry but this has to be the most stupid forum in the history of macrumors!

No mp3 player has ever been built without a scree to my knowlage, and I think you'll find no consumer in their right mind would buy one. And if it was voice activated or had some sort of voice scrolling, could you think how long that would take to scroll through songs! not to mention the fact that you'd have to remember every song on your mp3 player.

Guys c'mon use your inteligence and stop perpetuating a lie

Jason

I'm sorry, the fact that you said "no mp3 player has ever been built without a sceen to your knowledge" proves that your knowledge is minimal.

There are plenty of cheaper, flash mp3 player without any form of screen on the device or on a remote. I think we'll just have to wait and see what apple has to offer! can't wait!

This new iPod is kind of like Levi with the fifth pocket on their jeans. "Who really needs an extra, little pocket for their change?" Well.. I do for one. It doesn't do the job of my pocket that holds my wallet with all of its cash, but it certainly does a good job of holding my change. And my change is there, whether I end up needing it or not. Having 250 songs in my change pocket "just in case" is well worth it to me. Having all 10,000 of my songs in my main pocket is okay when I need it, but I usually don't. But the point is that that fifth pocket serves its purpose, and is there whether you use it or not. I hope we see this, cause I really want one. I can't wait to rock my LeviPod.

I'm curious about no screen but lets all face it. When Steve gets on that stage tomorrow and explains the new ipod to us it will all make sense. Remember this the guy who could sell a tortilla chip for $100.

I figure that slogan is either for iTunes (a better shuffle play, perhaps?), or as part of an ad for how rugged a flash-based iPod is; you drop stuff by accident at random, and your ipod micro will survive.

your dead on right. AND a big reason it doesn't have the screen is to ensure it doesn't canabilize sales of the other iPods. many, many folks want to own "an iPod" and if they had a choice that had a screen they would gladly pay a lower amount and skip out on higher capacity. Apple doesn't want this. They don't want someone to buy a $99-149 "iPod" and say their done. The new screen-less flash concept is different that what current iPods do and are like, it is more an ideal "second" iPod than a primary MP3 player.

Apple likely couldn't figure out anyway to make a flash player at low cost with the iPod standard UI ... AND NOT HAVE IT KILL THE SALES of all the other ipods.

depending on how small and COOL it looks plus price ($99 would be sane for having no screen) i might get one for my running.

I'm with you. I've had 3 iPods and have never used the shuffle feature. I don't like guessing what's coming up next, I like knowing. I even took it off the main menu of my mini. :D
I use both.

For older albums that were meant to be played in order, I listen to them in that way.

For current top 40/my favorites/etc., I tend to play in shuffle mode.

I hope that the iPod Shuffle has the ability to do both and maybe support multiple playlists -- especially if it does not have a screen.

Could "Life is Random" have anything to do with "iLife" rather than "iPod" or music?

The tagline would make more sense in this context, unless the whole premise of the iPod Shuffle really is "random shuffle" play, which seems sort of weak (at least until Steve explains it to me :) ).

I rather doubt this since it was pretter clear from the Moscone shots that it was an iPod-themed banner and had a graphic of the shulle icon thats in iTunes and all the iPods :)

I don't believe its the *whole* premise...just the "branding" one. And if you read my earlier post, the explaination will be I think eerily familiar.

Apple has this odd penchant for being unpredictable with the "product angle" and VERY predictable on the sales pitch.

They know their target, they know how to sell to them...every product intro pretty much works the same way. They stick to "what works" in this regard pretty tightly.

After all, maybe what Steve said holds true -- most flash-based players end up in a drawer. He just wants to be the one that sells it to you.

Because of Steves ranting about those players in the drawer, maybe a better name for this iPod would be iEatCrow.

Or the iLied.

You're missing the rest of the slogan-

The poster, in full, reads like this:

Life Is Random.
240 Songs A Million Ways.

I have no doubt that this will sell quite well.
iPod/iTunes and random shuffle have already dramatically changed the way I listen to music, and 95% of the time I just set my iPod mini to shuffle, and skip through unwanted songs.
The only thing missing from the iPod Shuffle, really, is solitaire :D

But check this out: I'm hoping the next generation iPod Shuffle doesn't have any visible controls; The silver part would be touch-sensitive, and would "light up" the buttons on the white plastic, using that Apple's "illuminating surfaces"(edit:Active enclosure for computing device ) -patent they got a while ago... I guess that would solve the screen issue as well.
