Man, I hope you don't regret that in like 6 months when prices get even worse for parts.

Do you like console gaming? I never could get into the controller life. I am strictly a mouse and keyboard guy.

Yea console is a different experience, I prefer it for story based single player games. Something about feet up on the sofa with a 65” OLED that is appealing.

I might upgrade my Studio for this. It's fast enough to overcome the Rosetta 2/WINE performance penalty.

There's no chill console gaming, when you've been enlightened by high frame rate, mods, old title availability and superior input.

Unless you have moved to games available only on the current console, aren't into fps or games requiring inventory management, lots of input using various buttons (got real tired of claw gripping a controller).

If I completely stopped gaming, I could go Mac (don't want multiple machines). Even now I don't play much, but having the option to play at the performance I want.

For those that don't like deep CoPilot integration in Windows 11. I've seen complaints about an AI process running in the background using a core at high rates even though AI is turned off.

I think that I had a Windows Update and CoPilot may be back. I need to check on the system and figure out how to remove it again if it is there. I am not set up with a CoPilot account nor a Windows account which is how I like to roll on Windows. Linux is not an option for me at this time but I'm keeping an eye on it.

Interesting take by Dave2D on his latest laptop review

Basically, the hardware is great, and in many cases, exceeding Apple Silicon, but Windows is pushing people away from the platform

I totally agree. If Windows got rid of all of that AI, bloatware, adware, onedrive, etc., crap, I wouldn't even have a Mac.

Needless to say I expect to have my Mac for years to come.

Yep, the more I see these sort of content, the more it affirms my decision to return to the mac platform.

One has to wonder at what point does Microsoft start listening. I mean what was whispers in the corners of reddit are now shouts and influencers openly mocking windows 11.

With products like the steam deck, the announced steam machine, gamers don't need to deal with windows/PCs. I find Crossover to be a great way to game for my studio, for work, there's almost no advantage to a windows laptop for most applications. There's still windows only software, but thats getting less and less. My company has largely transitioned off an older ERP that only had windows software, to a cloud based product and now its platform agnostic - you can use what ever you want.

This (bolded) is an interesting claim.

Until developers start doing linux versions out the box, Windows is still the default OS for building PC games, while Proton is able to work well it still misses anything that uses anticheats that require kernel access. Basically the same problem macOS has.

I guess it depends on what kind of gamer you are. To me the juice doesn't seem worth the squeeze to PC game on SteamOS/Bazzite or macOS at this time.

No argument, studios will be using windows to build the games. My point is for the average gamer who is tired of the nonsense that microsoft is doing. There's viable alternatives. Dave2d did a side by side, where one handheld was running steamos the other windows and while the steamos was running the game though emulation it was doing as well if not better then windows because of the bloat.

Yep, though as the popularity grows for these types of devices, one may see some sort of anticheat technology that works with linux.

I think if someone is needing/wanting a new gaming rig, then it most certainly is, if you already have a solid setup, you're right.

My point is that the hatred of windows 11 is growing, the interest in steamos and other solutions is growing. I'm not saying windows is doomed but don't underestimate people's desires to find alternative solutions to windows.

I dug into the Windows Update that is causing problems and the areas that it affected don't affect me at all because I don't use them or I don't have the hardware. So I've seen no programs. If this affected the majority of systems, beta testing would have caught it.

There was another Windows Update this morning and I installed it. No problems.

Tom's Hardware characterized it as: "A few Windows 11 users have been affected by a bug from the latest Windows 11 security update, which resulted in their PCs refusing to turn on. According to an AskWoody forum post, there were reports that some devices encountered an “UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME” error after"

How many is "A few"? I have seen one post on Reddit in r/lenovo. If there are issues with Bios, drivers or Windows, I expect to see a lot more posts on problems so, while the result is severe, the number of people that it affects seems very small.

That said, this Lenovo Yoga feels as bulletproof as my MacBook Pro in terms of operating system and firmware updates.

Totally agree. What we really need is different leadership at Microsoft again. I remember a time in the ninety’s and aught’s when Microsoft vs. Apple didn’t have a clear winner. People were passionate about Microsoft products (and this is still true with the Surface line for instance) just as people were passionate about Apple products.

I would love for someone new to come into Microsoft and get back to the sysadmin/IT guy roots. Like make it so it all works locally. No telemetry. All privacy. No Onedrive. I just don’t see that happening under the current CEO. Now if Panos Panay were to take over! :D

Kernel level anti-cheat is a bad practice to begin with. Even WINDOWS is affected by it since it doesn't work with ARM64 Windows either unless devs have put in effort there specifically (and I think only Fortnite has?).

It's not really the same as MacOS because Valve and others have put in effort to make it pretty seamless. You don't need a Linux Steam and one or more multiple Windows Steams running on Wine or Crossover like you used to, and it's really rare you need to fiddle. Most non-anticheat stuff, the majority of titles work shockingly well with no effort on your end. And tools like Heroic/Lutris make non-Steam games almost as easy.

I guess it depends on what kind of gamer you are. To me the juice doesn't seem worth the squeeze to PC game on SteamOS/Bazzite or macOS at this time.
Honestly gaming on SteamOS/Bazzite is IMO the best form of PC gaming. Controller centric UI that works, built-in tools like framerate capping, performance monitoring, pre-compiled GPU shaders, sleep that works, etc. There's even a decky plug-in that brings in all your Amazon, GOG, Epic games into the Steam game interface and you can install and launch them from there.
