Best Buy is offering my $730 as a trade-in on my M1 Max Studio. I was considering trading up to an M4 Max asking for Microcenter price matching. This is a surprisingly fair price.

Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen 14. You can remove the entire top case (keyboard, mouse, palmrests) without tools. The whole top case pops out and is held in by magnets so you can just push it back into place. So if there's a problem with the keyboard, trackpad, etc. it's easy to repair. The back plate is held on by five screws and easy to take off. So it will be easy to upgrade battery, RAM and SSD. Amazing that they could do this in an ultraportable.

Struggling with GeForce now since moving back to the Mac mini. I've been playing some Space Marine 2 and I'm surprised how poorly it runs on the Ultimate tier 5080. Even using DLSS quality I'm not getting higher than 70fps. I cannot enable frame gen as it introduces too much input latency, something that doesn't happen when running locally.

On my 5070 Ti (which was overlocked) I was able to run it at Native resolution and x2 frame gen and hit 160fps.

Something else that also keeps happening is poor ping, over 70 which is completely unplayable on a streamed service.

I've had intermittent performance issues with GFN, where my connection is good, but the game performed poorly and GFN complained about poor network bandwidth.

I think for some games, its an ok option, but more and more I'm thinking its not a permanent solution. For me, Crossover is a better option, but that all depends on the game compatibility and the computer's horsepower. I specifically opted for the Studio because I needed higher GPU cores then what the mini had

Yea it’s quite hit and miss. Just played now and it was excellent.

With macOS, you have less freedom, but you get a predictable experience, and the performance is dialed in because Apple controls both the software and hardware.
true, as in my case is I don't use  software for music, media like MP4, and design software anymore.
pages and numbers is just okay not no where near Excel, Word and air drop is getting worse.
 is much better, secure and easier to use than Windows, but not designed for me anymore.

Man, I disagree somewhat. Windows software is just getting so bad. AI/Copilot has thoroughly infected all of Office. Notepad is weird now. I have to disable like half the OS just to use it.

I know Mac has its own problems, but at least it isn’t getting intentionally worse with every patch/release.

well will see what happens,
I do use/miantain a windows computer seldomly (as spell check is much better!)
which seems easier to use for me, and I always avoided that AI on my Monterey

I agree completely, they're messing with so many things within windows forcing copilot in every nook and cranny. While not fully adopted, the RECALL feature is security/privacy nightmare.

MS is messing with things, that were fine for decades, but ignoring some of the more glaring holes

That's a very good price especially with thoughts ahead on likely end date for macOS support for M1 series CPUs

The really frustrating part is that I can’t find a single person that even WANTS recall. Like how hard is it to remember the things with which recall would help. No thanks. Same with copilot. I have an AI app I use (Poe.com as it allows me access to a variety of models and I don’t use AI all that much). I use copilot at work.

They work fine for what they are.

But what I don’t need is AI in my office apps. In my notepad. In onenote. Ugg. It’s so bad. Why do I need to chat with Copilot when I am reading my emails in outlook (old outlook by the way because the new one sucks)?

This all started back when Satya fired all the windows testers like 10 years ago. With AI it is just completely been ensh*ttified on a whole new accelerated level. GRRR.

And just like that the Walled Garden strikes again. This App Creator Studio whatever is all that is negative with Microsoft only trapped within Apple. It’s utterly lame and I have two days to return my Macbook. GRRRR. I can’t believe they put Numbers, Pages, and Keynote in there. So bad.

I mean, if they are going to be greedy, might as well go with Windows.

The sad part is I don't even think those products are very good - they're not on the same plane as Excel and word.

I bought pixelmator last year thinking I wanted an inexpensive image editor that is not subscription based - LOL
Yeah I have talked myself off the ledge mostly. I will just shift to using Office when I have to (I downgraded to the $99 Office plan with no AI) and it works fine.

I also mostly use third party software anyway (which is far more plentiful in the Mac side of things) so I am keeping the Macbook Air, and getting on with things. Still not happy though.

I use OnlyOffice, it seems to work well enough, and it handles the pivot tables I use - the app has some quirks but overall its good enough (being free).

Pages is excellent when you want to have easy design options and insert pictures. Word is a pain in the ash with that, but it's incredibly more advanced. Same with Numbers. It feels like getting cotton candy when you want beef and potato.

Yeah but it doesn’t work on iPad. GRRRR.

Edited to add: Whoops I thought you meant LibreOffice. I actually really like OnlyOffice, and it does work on an iPad. However, I couldn’t get it to see my file pile. I can try again.

For now, I am just using my non-AI MS Office. Or I will just use the free versions of Numbers, Pages, and Keynote—since for just personal stuff I don’t need real office anyway. THe worst I use is cell color changes by lookups…

Bro, you totally bailed on that 5070ti build too quickly and at completely the wrong time. Now that DDR5/NVME prices are sky high surely you'd have been better off just keeping the gaming desktop and having the inexpensive mac mini as well to scratch that mac itch when you get it?

Yeah that’s what I have basically done. I have a desktop with an RTX 5070 for gaming, and my 13” MacBook Air 16/512 for everything else.

You are correct, I should have kept it in hindsight. GeForce now isn’t as good as I remember, or I’ve been spoilt gaming locally at high refresh rates and high fidelity. I did get a good price for the machine due to the RAM prices, I mentioned this above.

So the only way to rectify this is of course, build another machine. Would be a wasted build opportunity if I didn’t improve on my previous spec. So we have a 9800x3d / RTX 5080 in the works. Fully Noctua Chromaxed (gen 2 where possible). Still in the same NZXT H3
mATX case, but with a B850M-E motherboard. Topped off with a 1000w platinum PSU.

The RTX I bagged from the same place I sold my machine, for £965 which is a decent saving over £1200. It’s 2 weeks old, they decided they wanted a 5090 after all. MSI Gaming Trio OC 5080.

Nice! Now just keep it and the Mac mini and you will be cured. What about RAM and case?

Case is still the NZXT H3. RAM is Kingston FURY Beast EXPO 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5 PC5-48000C30 6000MHz Dual Channel Kit
