iPhone Foldable Android Users: Thoughts on the iPhone Duo?

I believe they have authorized walk-in places to get that replaced, UBreakiFix and some BestBuys

I walked into a Ubreakit near my house, the guy was very nice but told me the quickest way to get it replace is to first make an appointment online. Because he doesn't stock the film and Samsung would need to send him the film prior to me walking in. Trying to make an appointment online the AI just gives me the run around. So I went back there and put my name down, and he said he will call me. I has been 3 months and I haven't received a call from him.

The screen film itself isn't in terrible condition or peeling. I just wanted to utilize the free replacement before my first year is up. Now it has been over the free film replacement period so I would need to pay to get it replaced. I will just deal with the small scratches. This is the first time I had to deal with Samsung, I've delt with a few issues with Apple and their CS has always been top notch.

After watching some video on the Duo things that I think will be hard to work past for me is the dock on the right side. I'm left handed and when it's closed that's the hand I'll use to hold it. Hopefully it can be moved to the other side.
Dual apps only is a tough pill for me to swallow since I really like three apps and floating windows like Samsung does it.
But I guess when people actually get it in hand we will be able to see.
Other than that it looks absolutely amazing.

All it takes is a software update to include a toggle. I have to believe this is coming in the future. Maybe 27.2.

As @contacos pointed out in another thread... Samsung was chasing Chinese OEMs with the pursuit of being thin and light. But no one has made a big deal out of it with the iPhone Duo... they like the way it feels. So, maybe this is Samsung signal to cool it down on those aspects.

I find it interesting that at least superficially the Galaxy Z Fold 8 has a very similar design as the iPhone Duo. The Galaxy is lighter, but the Duo has higher resolution screens, IP68 rating, and a better hinge. Since Samsung makes the display they obviously knew where Apple was going with the Duo, at least with respect to the basic design. It will be interesting to see if they adopt some of Apple's refinements in the next Fold, and whether Google, Motorola and others adopt the "passport" design.

Hopefully. For most as is will be fine but some of use use the left hand and it's not as seamless.

Wow what a pain in the ass, most definitely not making it easy. I would get pissed and probably change it on my own LOL

I mean it wasn't a big deal. For the Samsung flagship store we had a 2 hour wait for Ding Tai Fung so I figured I'd drop by to have them replace the film. They told me no, and take it to a 3rd party repair store. The Ubreakit guy was nice but I had a feeling he rather worked on something else. The AI Customer Service Samsung had was useless, there's a number they gave me to call but at that point I figured I'd just live with these scratches. Again not a big deal but it made me miss Apple a bit.

I still hate Liquid GlAss but now with the Duo I kinda understand the directing they wanted to go with. It didn't work on their Pro phones(or iPad) IMHO but something like a Foldable or an all-Glass phone the UI makes perfect sense.

I would have gone bold and named it Apple Phone 1.

The Fold is thinner, weighs less. All that matters. Even though Duo has cooler features, is it really worth the weight/size compromise? It may be, except I use my phone with my left hand too, so now I am further compromising. Z fold 8 is better for me, probably. Will have to try the duo in person.

It’s genuinely not bringing ANYTHING new to the table other than a modified version of iOS.

I like it, and I’m keen to play with one, but it seems a bit outdated/last gen to me hardware-wise with the 254g weight, 11.3mm thickness when closed and subpar camera system all around.

Yes, even though I’m right handed I usually hold my phone in my left hand and carry it in my left pocket.

You know, I'm the same way for some unknown reason. I've always carried my phone in my left pocket and other items such as keys, hand sanitizer, etc., in my right pocket. I reach for my phone much more often than any other item yet place it in my non-dominant side pocket. So strange!

I think they had to decide if they wanted to go really light and thin like Samsung's latest or if they wanted to go thicker with areas of ip rating and overall strength durability. No foldable other than maybe some Chinese versions have the best cameras right now and you pay more money because of all the other components in making the device. If you have seen durability video on the latest Samsung phone it truly is amazing to me how they can withstand more than we think but with that said I also personally don't like the UDC inner camera which I think is horrible but others don't care bc they won't use it

If you didn't get a cell phone until your 20s, that's normal. Only takes a few years as a teen when your brain is still developing for that muscle memory to get hard-coded. Gen X right-handed males only had a few things to put in their pockets -- keys and maybe some mints/gum/chapstick. Makes sense to put them in your most accessible pocket and that muscle memory just sticks. Wallet was also always the right butt cheek because it needed to be reachable with the dominant hand. Younger folk might have had a phone before they had to worry about keys, or at least they realized at an early age that the phone is more important than the keys, so they might have had an easier time getting the muscle memory that the phone goes on the right side. I am hoping I can rewire my brain, but definitely going to accidently put my keys in with my phone more than a few times before I build that habit.

Yeah, I too was rather shocked at the beating the Fold8 can withstand…

And I get why Apple chose to go this more utilitarian route for their first foray into the foldable market. It’s just not for me, as the bulkiness is why I LEFT the foldable market until the Fold8 came along.

Yep totally understand, Fold 8 feel in hand is so good and closed looks excellent in my eyes

Hardware looks great, but Apple has always excelled at this. The problem is it runs iOS and that's enough to make me stay away. They did put a couple software features that are kinda iPad-ish in there which is nice, but at the end of the day, it still a limited OS that' frustrating as h@ll to use on a daily basis.

I think we're going to see some nicer animations from the Android side of things but the Duo feels like a huge undersale. Apple could have dominated this entire market from day-one by giving the Duo iPadOS. This would have unlocked Apple's richer tablet app market and given it a proper desktop output. iPads can run iOS apps out of the box so it would just need some translation layers added to the mix.

Instead they decided that the ecosystem upsell was more important than providing value to its top-spending customers and that they should still be expected to buy a tablet on top of a £2000+ phone that turns into one. Why this doesn't incense more buyers I don't know.

On the flip side I can spend £1500 on a Z Fold 8 that does unfold into a tablet, doesn't have budget cameras and does have a desktop output. At that price a foldable should be the only device you need.
