Nothing. I just don’t think it’ll be a big seller. But I’m only arguing the use case… if I can carry a phone and tablet, what is wrong with that logic?
To be fair, foldable phones are not twice as thick and twice as heavy as a comparable slab phone. The problem is that it’ll be about twice as heavy and twice as thick as a normal phone, while still only being a mini-sized tablet, but now with a crease and probably no way to attach a Pencil to it. Also speaker placement would be a compromise one way or the other. So it combines an unattractive phone with an unattractive tablet.
I get your point. Foldable phones have their quirks, and it's fair to question their practicality.I have an acquaintance who has a foldable Android phone. It's awful in my view... even when I try to envision Apple's design and quality aesthetics as much as I can.
The problem I see is that it's just not going to be good enough to get the job done at this point. In 10 years, maybe. But not now... and I doubt even then I would have an interest in this, neither as a phone nor a tablet. It seeks to solve problems that don't really exist.
I think you are missing the point… I didn’t mention Windows laptop. I’m referring to a iPhone and iPad… you carry around a iPhone daily... correct? Imagine being able to unfold it into a iPad and being able to use it as a tablet.Yes, I own each; plus I have a Windows laptop, and I use them in vastly different ways. I don't need them merged into a singular device, that aims to serve every purpose yet does it inadequately yet costs 4-6 times the amount.
That’s why I wrote “normal phone” and not “large slab phone”. And secretely I was comparing with my mini.To be fair, foldable phones are not twice as thick and twice as heavy as a large slab phone.
Big seller? As in what exactly? Because apparently Google has entered the market after Samsung has been at it for years.Nothing. I just don’t think it’ll be a big seller.
Technically, it folds. But it’s not a necessarily a foldable in terms of what the industry desires… that’s why Microsoft has scrapped that design and coming out with something similar to Pixel Fold and Galaxy Fold.Microsoft did something similar with the Surface Duo, and it didn’t sell well.
Haha, well that is an unfair comparison! 😁That’s why I wrote “normal phone” and not “large slab phone”. And secretely I was comparing with my mini.![]()
Someone enlighten me as to how a phone (in a tablet form factor) with 75-90% of it's screen folded away isn't some unwieldy, bulky mess?!
Don't understand why you'd want a tablet to fold. The crease will be more noticeable on such a big device and it's not like you want it to fold to fit in a pocket because it's too big for that.
Current foldables feature ultra thin foldable glass. You are referring to the factory screen protector when you mention plastic, which I remove from the inner display anyway.i like the idea of a folding phone but unless apple can invent folding glass (lol) then i won't buy it. sorry but i am NOT using a plastic screen that gets ruined with your finger nails or bits of dust lmao.
maybe if apple provide a lifetime supply of free plastic screen protectors or make it super easy and cheap for anyone to replace the screen then i might think about it.
I despise the crease these foldable devices exhibit.
You don't want either.
Go find somebody who has had one of the Samsung foldables for a month. Look at the screen damage.
Foldable is NOT a workable screen technology right now, and won't be unless there are serious changes in materials science.

The iPad really needs a crease down the middle of the display. A crease creates visual inconsistency, and that is desirable. For example, the best thing to ever happen to the iPhone line and MacBook line displays was the notch. The notch created visual inconsistency, but that is a good thing because Tim Cook said they sold a lot and made enormous profits for Apple. Oh yeah, rounded corners on the displays create visual inconsistency, so they are also a good thing. Tim Cook is so wonderful!

Foldables are complete trash. They still break and are clunky as hell mechanically.
This rumor, for the reasons you stated, seems like total BS.
But I’m only arguing the use case… if I can carry a phone and tablet, what is wrong with that logic?
Most of my financial services wont work with a VOIP number. My two investment firms, personal bank, two of my four credit cards, and my 401k handler want a real non-voip number for text verification.
Yes SMS sucks for 2nd factor, but most large US banks don't give you a choice.
The significant problem is that without some big changes, it would be like boot-camping iPadOS and macOS. Who wants to lose access to a local document they were working on in BBEdit until they find a keyboard to dock with?I'm still shocked they do not sell an iPad that runs OS, but when docked runs MacOS. It wouldn't cannibalize sales because they could charge an insane premium.
a foldable Tablet makes even less sense considering everyone has a phone, so why / when would you need for your tablet to be smaller? if anything I would want to be able to make my Phone bigger (when needed)
Can't wait the day Apple offers foldable to see all those fold sh*t talkers jump the bandwagon. LOL
Foldables are ofc niche devices, I've been on one for a year (Fold 4), it's been great. I am back on iPhone just because I cannot track my Airpods without iPhone or iPad (never had one).
Exactly. The crease will all of a sudden become "iconic" like the notch.Macrumors forum member reactions when this is released:
"Wow Apple innovates again with inventing a foldable dispay!"
"The crease is a feature that Apple carefully thought out"
"Yes, finally a solution not in search of a problem!"
"I'll bet Samsung copies them next year!"
