There are select challenges but easily worked around for me. My bank, investment firms, credit cards have no trouble at all. But there are certainly a few that offer no easy workarounds- biggest one for me is Ticketmaster which now offers no way to reach customer service at all before 2-factor login via SMS. All support is behind that wall, so one can't even buy tickets through them with a Mac Studio Ultra or similar without select phones using select services. That is certainly frustrating for a customer who has had this same phone number for 20 years and that is obviously in their records for 20 years of purchases. But oh well, there are other ticket sellers who apparently want the business instead.

On the other hand, my total cellular bill for 5G year round is $25 PER YEAR. And iPads don't get "long in tooth" every 2-4 years. My jump was Mini 2 to 6 after EIGHT years. There's a LOT of money savings in a modest amount of inconvenience on relatively select situations that generally have workarounds.

If it's worth the hassle to you, I suppose, and that certainly is a cheap way to keep in touch. I personally think, however, that the ipad (mini or otherwise) is too big to carry around, hell I think the Max models are too big, but then I don't really consume any content on the go except music. I don't stream or watch video away from home except when travelling, I don't use social media on my iphone, etc. I could use my work-issued SE 2022 for SMS, but I don't want to start tying my work cellphone number to my personal life; I give them my desk number if they want one. Additionally, I have zero clothes that I could fit a mini into, other than my winter wool coat and my backpack.

My cell bill is $19/month, and regardless, money isn't a concern. I keep my iPhones for 4 years or so, and they don't feel long in the tooth. I'm happy to hear that it works for you, though!

I don't understand the hype for that foldies. Is there anybody out there who doesn't know whats happening with plastic after folding many times?
The better Joyce would be the ting, microsoft did with they'r phones. 2 Displays, folding into one. Can't beat this...

Maybe let’s see the product before we all pass judgement yes? I’m excited to see what they come up with. Might be good, might be terrible.

There's no place for reason around here. Hate the concept until Apple offers one. Then "shut up and take my money" love it as if you always felt that way, evangelize it to others and even put down the old single slab, bricks "puny" screen. ;)

I’m good with my iPad Mini, don’t need to fold it.

I would rather have a smaller MacBook Air - like 11-12" and MBA's already are foldable.
That would be really exciting.

To be fair, foldable phones are not twice as thick and twice as heavy as a comparable slab phone.

Z Fold 5 (folded): 154.9 x 67.1 x 13.4 mm, weight: 253g

Google Pixel Fold (folded): 139.7 x 79.5 x 12.1 mm, weight: 283g

iPhone 15 PM: 159.9 x 76.7 x 8.25 mm, weight: 221g

There you go with facts again. This crowd wants no facts. Abominations all... until Apple rolls out their Fold. Then it's adoration and "I can't believe how great this is"... then ridiculing the old single slab puny. ;)

The bean counters are running the design? What could possible go wrong...

If this ever actually comes to market, there will be MR threads about how owners rarely open the full screen and just use it folded because it’s a hassle, regretting that they didn’t just spend the money on a larger phone. 😉

I guess Apple will do it the Apple way. No cheap plastic screen which scratches and makes the device ugly and feel cheap.
Apple i known for durable materials everywhere at hardware.
A foldable device with ceramic shield would bring back "Apple magic" to the way things are done, even if software is a catastrophy now (imho).

I hope they keep it reasonably small, like an ipad mini-sized one, that opens out to regular ipad size. So it opens out like a book.
Then you'd have the best of two worlds… an ipad mini and regular ipad

And that's OK- you feel how you want to feel. And I really do not feel much "hassle."

This thread's about a foldable iPad concept. If a Mini can fold, it becomes about the same size as an iPhone... and thus pocketable. Then, maybe some don't think it is too big to carry around. In other words, it becomes a viable option alternative to iPhone... by also being able to expand into a bigger screen for those who DO use iPads for many things seemingly not important to you.

Something for everyone. Everything is not for everyone.

Apple’s biggest problem is trying to sell products their fans say they hate because android phones did it 5 years first

I'll never get the hype behind foldable phones and tablets. Too thick and look like ****.

Wait until Apple rolls one out and than I bet you will suddenly get it... as will just about everyone else who posts such stuff now... BEFORE Apple offers one.

See YEARS of phablet phone ridicule before Apple went phablets... and NFC ridicule before Apple Pay... and USB-C port ridicule up to days before iPhone 15 launch... and 1080p AppleTVs while Apple still clung to 720p and then 4K AppleTVs while Apple clung to 1080p... and iPod even on launch day presented by the Lord Jobs himself... and Vpro right now before it is launched... and this fold concept before Apple rolls out a fold.

Don't understand why you'd want a tablet to fold. The crease will be more noticeable on such a big device and it's not like you want it to fold to fit in a pocket because it's too big for that.
Why will it be more noticeable?

This is no problem at all. As soon as Apple rolls out any such thing/feature, it's as if THEY developed it and it often becomes THE reason to buy it, soon evangelized by those who formerly wrote passionate hate against it... then propped up by putting down whatever it replaced. Sprinkle in some "Apple may not be first, but they waited to get it right."

There are YEARS of hate posts against phablets... until Apple went phablet. It was relentless ridicule for years and then... it was as if no such opinions were ever posted. I'm still looking for all the pants with bigger pockets and man purses. And WOW- what a great leap in human evolution to make those one hands scale up to keep that all-important ability in play. Apparently, all iPhone users can easily palm basketballs now. It's amazing! ;)

This is not happening, this Kuo just pulling stuff out of where the sun don't shine. Apple is actively feeding him misinformation and whoever is doing it is getting pink slips.

I have an acquaintance who has a foldable Android phone. It's awful in my view... even when I try to envision Apple's design and quality aesthetics as much as I can.

The problem I see is that it's just not going to be good enough to get the job done at this point. In 10 years, maybe. But not now... and I doubt even then I would have an interest in this, neither as a phone nor a tablet. It seeks to solve problems that don't really exist.
The 'problem' exists for everybody that wants one but doesn't have one.
I'd suggest that if you could have a foldable device in a reasonable form factor without longhevity issues that you'd have it. Why would you not want a bigger canvas when you needed it?
When I used the Android phone my acquaintance had, (a couple of months old), I had to move to an abnormal angle to see the crease. You don't notice it with all content, are you being honest?
