Foldable iPhone Display Production Begins Ahead of Launch Next Year

The wording is sometimes curious:
a durable hinge

I mean, would anyone have expected a hinge that wasn't intended to be durable? Obviously, it could prove to be wonderfully durable or appallingly non-durable, once it gets out into the world. But, as a listed feature in a prediction article, it looks odd.

What's interesting to me is how this could become the only machine you need.
I suspect that lots of people already rely on just a smartphone. Someone looking forward to getting rid of their iPad will need to adapt to living on one battery. My iPad usage allows my iPhone to remain charged for whenever I need it as a phone.

You cannot know at this point if it renews every year. And given Apple will try to sell it as a phone and tablet in one it probably won't have "iPhone" is the name. More likely it will be "Apple Fold", a new category for Apple, leaving room naming wise for a larger "Apple Fold Ultra" down the line, should it sell well enough for Tim 'numbers' Cook. Will either of these potential models run a version of iPadOS on the internal display? Seems possible.

Just like the iPhone Air wont be called the iAir, it's bound to have iPhone in its name. I hope they call it the iPhonebook.

If you turn that iPhone 90 degrees you get almost same size screen.
You really don't. Here is the 6.9" 16 Pro Max screen (blue) against the Fold's inner screen (green). It's 59% more screen area, which is about the same relative difference in screen area as between an iPhone mini and the Pro Max. And the Fold will have no Dynamic Island, so more usable height.

I never suggested Apple would name any device iAir. iPhonebook, I don't see that name happening. The truth is none of us knows for sure, but my hunch is Apple Fold. We will see.
Samsung's been using the name Fold for almost six years; I doubt Apple will give it a name which is common to their competition.

If it is positioned as an phone it will have iPhone in its name, just like every other phone they make.

Again, none of us know for sure. Samsung was using Ultra before Apple, and Apple uses Ultra in many things now, and probably will for iPhone in the future. Apple sometimes names things logically. It's made by Apple and it's a watch, Apple Watch. But, again, no one knows for sure so I wouldn't be overconfident yet. My bet is even if they don't use "Fold" they do have "Apple" as the first word. But "Fold" is in the running for sure (my opinion).

Of course we are just speculating about an unreleased product, but I want feel special for naming it correctly while everyone else was calling it something like iPhold. :D

What's interesting to me is how this could become the only machine you need. We're getting to the stage where the iPhone is powerful enough that it could be plugged into a screen and wireless keyboard and, with iPad OS, this phone that folds into an iPad could also work as a Mac. Not for power users working in video production / graphics of course, but for most users an iPhone is already powerful enough to do everything they need day to day, it just lacks the form factor and OS.

Power isn't the issue, it's the OS. iPad and iPhone are just too limited and locked down for me to consider them as a primary device, and I don't work anywhere near video or graphics production. What's the chances that you can run dual monitors via an iFold? Regardless, I still prefer to keep my devices separate. I don't want to carry everything I do with me at all time.

All this talk of foldables, but why not a clamshell???! I don't need or want more screen, but I do want a smaller device in the pocket.

How about iOS on the outer display and iPadOS on the inner display. That would be ideal. I would love it even more if iPadOS was eliminated and they allowed it to run MacOS on the inner display.
iPadOS is iOS to a larger extent. A fully windowed environment on an 8" display has rather limited use compared to the old split-view and slide-over. Android solutions run maybe 3 apps at once with one hidden away to pull down (see the OnePlus foldable from last year).

Have you seen how the screen's cover is now detaching though across the fold? I saw my colleague's Samsung Fold 7 yesterday. Not good at tall. Not enough testing it seems...
The new models have eliminated the stylus layer to make the glass thicker. They also need to account for the user as well. I'm sure your colleague is as careful as they come but if you work on a building site, well....

....I kind of do. Its a construction lab full of sand and cement. I would love a foldable if I travelled more for work but in my current job I'd never risk it!

The new OS26 system can mimic splitscreen in how two windows resize in relation to each other.

If it run iPadOS + Phone app then the exterior screen may just be locked to full screen app view while the interior isnt locked to that.

Even at $2,000 this is the only phone I'm really excited about coming up. 17 Air, meh, skinny thin but trash battery. I already have to charge my 15 Pro twice a day at minimum. Can't wait to order this on day 1.

It usually takes Apple 3-4 gens of a new product to figure it out: iPod, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV, etc.

Correct me if my logic is flawed regarding battery life, but wouldn't the folding iPhone, when open, be using about the same battery capacity per screen size as using two iPhone Airs simultaneously? Maybe even less? Only one chip to run, though.
