Foldable iPhone Display Production Begins Ahead of Launch Next Year

For those of you who think $2000 is a lot for a book style foldable, keep in mind that you are getting an iPhone Pro Max and an iPad Mini in one device. When you add the two devices separately, with comparable specs, the total is:

iPhone Pro Max w/ 512GB of storage: $1399
iPad Mini Wi-Fi & Cellular w/ 512GB of storage: $949
Total: $2,348

Does the rumors look like this?

Pretty much, yes.

I honestly would prefer a folding phone that I can use with half the screen most of the time that then becomes a bigger, wider device when I want.

It's like a book, I don't want to have to open the book to see what the book is about....
The separate external screen seems like a horribly inelegant solution to me too, but I wonder if a lot of use of the “closed” book mode would result in a visible delineation between that half of the screen and the less-often used half due to OLED wear. A compensation algorithm would of course dim the lesser-used half to try to match, but it would have to be awfully precise to be unnoticeable if the two halves were on one continuous surface. Of course, two separate screens with a bezel/separator in between—a la the Westworld staff tablets—would solve this and a great many other problems…

But your comparison price equivalent has two cellular devices, each with 512GB of storage. Since the foldable iPhone cannot become two separate cellular devices, and, knowing Apple, will probably have a base storage of 256, you should use the price of the base WiFi iPad mini and the price of the Pro Max with 256.

Okay, fair enough. I’m just curious about the main use cases for a larger display area, given that the width stays the same in landscape orientation. For example, when watching content like movies, the image remains the same size, but the black bars at the top and bottom just get larger, so in that case, the added value seems limited. Are there other specific use cases where the larger display actually brings enough benefit, considering the compromises that come with a folding device?
I seldom do things like use Safari or Lightroom in landscape, especial if it's something that uses the keyboard, because the screen isn't tall so I would absolutely like a double height landscape screen. However if all you do with he larger screen is watch movies then sure, it probably doesn't give much value beyond the ProMax.

Comparing against base devices is irrelevant for me because my phone is 512gb and my iPad is 1TB cellular. So a combined device would save me a significant amount of money in iPad upgrades.

I upgrade the storage on both my iPhone and iPad so price comparing the base devices is irrelevant to me.
And I shouldn't be helping people justify the cost of the rumored foldable iPhone anyhow, as I personally believe that having an iPhone and a separate iPad is the better option considering the state of current display and battery technology.

You're welcome to do whatever you want, but its easy for each person to compare costs of an iPhonebook to what they would spend on their separate devices including iPad storage and cellular upgrades.

A separate 512GB iPhone + 512GB cellular iPad Mini would cost me $2250 (or $2450 if I wanted 1TB to use it for mobile photo editing like my current iPad) so thats the price I compare the iPhonebook to. Actually the separate device cost would be higher still because I also have to include the iPad data plan for several years. iPhonebook AppleCare is probably equal to AC on two devices so that's a wash costwise.

Of course no one with a relatively recent iPhone will be paying full price because carriers offer very good trade-in deals, especially if you have something like a Next upgrade plan.

You have to price a cellular & Wi-Fi iPad Mini for a far comparison because when you unfold a foldable phone, you have a mini tablet with cellular and Wi-Fi, and also the storage has to be equal as well, like you've mentioned. I've never owned a foldable with less than 512GB of storage and I've owned 9 of them to date. Therefore I used 512 in this example.

However, even if you go with a 256GB iPhone 16PM and a 256GB iPad Mini (with cellular and Wi-Fi), you're still at $1948 total. So, it is a wash either way being that you are getting the two devices in one.

Then you're a foldable fan, and unlikely to agree with my rumor era opinion that buying the cellular iPad mini with 512GB and an iPhone Pro Max with 512GB is a better use of the money anyway. ;)

****** aspect ratio. 1st gen tech. Made by Samsung. Too expensive. Don’t want massive phone. Nope.
The aspect ratio will be great for content and all media

Slab phones have just got so damn boring and unless cameras are great they hold little value these days compared to foldables.
