They underpriced expectations for sure. But was there any competition at that point? Android tablets weren't a thing yet. Galaxy Tab, Motorola Xoom, and others all followed. Most of them from cell carriers with two-year contracts, so the price was subsidized and hard to compare to Apple's. But I think Apple was first on this one(?)
Considering foldables are ~1% of the US market today, is that really considered 'competition' for Apple?

Apple can single-handedly take the overall market share of foldables from 1% to >10%... they only have to price theirs elastic enough to take share from existing iPhone base. They will do what they do best.. cannibalize their own products. And you don't have to price it 50% more than iPhone Pro Max to do that.

Foldables in 2025 is actually the perfect corollary to the tablet market in 2010. Sure, a few (1%) of early-adopters have them, but they are nowhere near a common sight. Here comes Apple to change all that...

Still have Zero interest in a foldable iPhone (or any phone in a smartphone form factor). Don’t understand the appeal vs a standalone tablet/ipad mini sized device. You’d have to fully eliminate any sign of a screen crease before I’d consider.

...and just removing battery to gain the "thinness" so far that you have to then buy an additional battery so that its usable throughout the day is NOT innovation... I definitely don't want 2 iPhone Airs attached with a hinge for $2,000 or more.
Yeah 27 hours (Apple) oddly not enough day on your planet. ;)

Why is it always a folding phone? There clearly isn't a huge market for people that desire more screen real estate on a phone who wouldn't just go with a Max/Plus size.

A folding iPad makes much more sense. It would be much more portable, wouldn't require a third screen or external selfie camera like a phone would, could keep FaceID and is just an extra size/form factor within a category already dominated by Apple.
I think the folding phone has to come first. Smaller screen, smaller hinge, bigger market.

Trying to go straight to a 13” foldable screen is a recipe for disaster

Less movable parts means less things getting broken by wear and tear.
Of course, the Apple Faithful with disposable income just buy a new phone every year, so they don't care about device longevity.

But for the rest of Apple's customers, a phone that works without problems for 7-8 years might be considered preferable to any gimmick.

This reeks of Apple just trying to appease their billionaire shareholders with claims of "We haven't stopped innovating! Look here, growth!". Hence all the controlled leaks.
You could always just buy the phone that works for you and quit complaining that others might want something different. It’s not like the folding phone will replace the entire existing range.

I’m hoping the dual lens part of the rumor means the Air18 will have dual lenses too

As long as Apple offer a Pro Max size iPhone, I will avoid folding iPhones like the plague. I absolutely do not need a device that folds into the size of an iPad while I am going about my daily business. I also won't be paying the silly money Apple will undoubtedly charge for a folding device. More than happy with a Pro Max in my pocket and an iPad at home.
I am very eager for a folding iphone. I do need a device that folds into the size of an ipad, especially for my daily business. Apple charge silly money for most of their devices, including pro maxs and ipads, so it will just be another device that if it's worth it to you you will buy it.

I really want a foldable, but not at those prices. I can't justify the expense and the device doesn't really replace multiple devices (for me) in the same way the iPhone did.

Maybe in 10 years.
I really want a Ferrari, but not at the initial cost, maintenance costs and repair costs when someone scratches it because I parked it outside. So, I guess I won't be getting one!

Have been waiting for a foldable from Apple for a long time. Think the starting price will be $1999. Would like to hear more about the screen dimensions. Hopefully it will have some kind of zoom lens. Eagerly waiting to hear all the rumors about it in the months ahead. Would like to see production in India too as otherwise the prices in the local market might go as high as $2800 due to high import duty.

I am not saying people can just buy what works for them. I am just expressing my opinion that I think its a stupid product. If the Air works for your, great. Forums are for expressing opinions.
Yep. All good. I'm with this for sure! I like the opinions... I just like to reinforce.. I kind of wish Apple would release a smaller phone... but then I see it doesn't sell well so I kind of get they launch products that appeal to the masses. Take care.

I want a flip-phone, and a foldable iPad. This way, the iPhone is a small practical mighty device, and the iPad is basically a book.

Steve Jobs would probably have released a foldable even sooner than Tim Cook. It's so funny that so many people (not talking about the author of the comment above @tim-apple-silicon here, just in general) say Steve Jobs would be "rolling in his grave" at the idea of a foldable etc.
Rolling in grave would be mild. This is more like parade-ing the corpse of Jobs around Microsoft square
