Whether this is true or not, I would NOT buy a first generation foldable iPhone. There's too many things that could go wrong with it, and something like this probably won't show all of its defects until millions of people are using it.
Millions already are using foldable smartphones for a number of years, so it shouldn’t be all that difficult.

I would just like to know if once it is unfolded, is it capable of running any iPadOS native apps?
It’s very unlikely IMO, because that would either mean that you could simultaneously run the iOS version of the same app on the outer screen, the two versions (iPadOS and iOS) being separate instances with separate data and separate state and separate notifications; or else that you can’t also run the iOS version on the outer screen. Both would be an unacceptable user experience to Apple.

Samsung definitely got the hinge game figured out.

Although, if I were Apple, I'd give Panos Panay a call - dude knows hinges.

Who wants this device? How many people are there who are out and about thinking if only my phone could unfold into the size of a mini tablet? Maybe a few people who write for The Verge?

Of course, the classic tactic from a leaker. oh, there is big, big, big problems, but those big big big problems could be solved and if they are solved than technically I was right.
The same leak also reports that the crease does meet Apple’s standards now. So it evens out? 😉

… except for the fact that the dimensions have been out there for like a year, we know that when unfolded it’s basically the same screen size and aspect ratio of the iPad Mini 1 through 5.
The dimensions reported over the past year haven’t been completely consistent. According to the latest (?) screen resolution leaks, the inner screen will be 1:1.41 (1920 x 2713) at 428 PPI, while the iPad mini is 1:1.52 (1488 x 2266) at 327 PPI. Not really that close.

Personally I think it’s very unlikely for the Ultra to run iPad apps (see upthread for why) and to support the Pencil (requires extra hardware in the already space-constrained form factor, and where would you carry the Pencil and how would you charge it).

Come on, the posts in this thread are as if they’ve never seen foldable from other companies.
Yes there is a market for foldables
Yes hinges are reliable on other foldables

This is a massive misunderstanding of how iPhone and iPad apps work.
There really is no mystery, if you shrink a window of an iPad app small enough within iPadOS 26, it reverts to the layout that would be used on the iPhone.
and even within that, applications being designed for different screen layouts is something Apple has been pushing for for years at this point.
There is no separate iPhone and iPad application, it would just be told to “run in iPhone mode” when it’s closed and “run in tablet mode” when it’s opened.
We have basically seen a variant of this already, anyone remember when the iPhone 6+ first launched and apps could have iPad like side bars when in landscape?

Last chance to cancel the iPhone Crease... If it was ever to ship. We have't seen any confirmation that it is coming. Not in leaked parts or leaked final technical details. I have hope that it will never happen.

Foldable phones exist for about a quarter of a century now. Foldable electronics since the early 80s if not earlier. I had/have foldable electronics from the early 80s which still work.
Why do they have hinges problems of all things, in 2026?

As for foldable phones with foldable screens, I still say that thing is stupid.

Sounds like a realistic thing to possibly happen. And absolutely the right call to halt it until resolved if true. And the right call to wait and not be the first on the block with a first gen Apple product.

This rumo makes zeros sense, if this was the case then there would not be time to redesign the hinge and still release on time. Also, Its now May 2026. There is no way this hinge design and final phone designs have not been locked in for a while now, We are less than 5 months from expected launch. I for one can not wait for this to come out!!

The Apple iPhone Fold stories are going to start heating up. A lot of inaccurate stories will start appearing. If the fold is coming in September the final product is completed. The mass production is starting soon.
