Apple's first foldable iPhone will be equipped with four cameras, and Touch ID instead of Face ID, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

In his Power On newsletter today, Gurman said the four cameras will consist of one front camera, one inner camera, and two rear cameras.

The latest iPad Air, iPad mini, and entry-level iPad models have Touch ID power buttons, and this feature will likely extend to the foldable iPhone.

The foldable iPhone will use Apple's second-generation C2 modem for cellular connectivity, but it will lack a physical SIM card slot, said Gurman.

Apple is currently testing black and white color options for the foldable iPhone, he added.

Gurman expects the foldable iPhone to have a book-like design, with a large inner display when unfolded. Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously said the foldable iPhone will have a 5.5-inch outer display, and a 7.8-inch inner display.

Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold7 has an 8-inch inner screen, and a 6.5-inch outer screen.

Kuo said the foldable iPhone — and Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8, will feature a "crease-free" inner display. He said Apple will achieve this feat by using a laser-drilled metal display plate, which can disperse the stress generated by bending.

Gurman said Apple recently pivoted from on-cell to in-cell display technology, and he believes this change should help to make the foldable iPhone's crease "less obvious."

He said Apple plans to release the foldable iPhone next year — as widely expected.

1+1+2=5 … I see, makes sense. Not.

Touched is a non-starter for me. At the rumored price point there should be 2 faceid modules.

“Gurman said the five cameras will consist of one front camera, one inner camera, and two rear cameras.” and the fifth one?
Ugh, I wrote this before having my morning coffee and didn't even catch his 1 + 1 + 2 = 5 mistake in his newsletter.

Thanks for flagging.

I updated our coverage.

The first model will be "crease-free", and models thereafter will be even more "crease-free". Temper your opinions of unannounced products. I don't see Apple using such wording to market their folding display. The only way to get a crease-free display, as I see it, is to have two separate displays that butt up against one another when fully opened—precision engineered line with no curved crease. Something I personally see as a good idea, as it would probably increase build quality, display consistency over time, and reliability, but Apple is unlikely to go this route.

What are people's opinion on Touch ID? I have never liked it and doesn't work for me especially in the winter. I have it on my mini and it's actually faster and more efficient to just put in my code. This would be a deal breaker for me.

ToF sensor on the rear is a camera.

As this folding iPhone becomes closer to reality, it’s refreshing to see fewer posters deny it or post the usual “foldables are a gimmick and Apple would never make one.”

In addition to combining my iPhone and iPad Mini into 1 device, the rumor of a possible iPad Mini with an 8.7" screen may be another reason for me to get the foldable. I'm skeptical Apple can shrink the bezels enough to accommodate the larger screen with also increasing the physical size of the iPad.

I really hope the rumored non-square aspect ratio of the inner screen is true. The square screens of other foldables aren't great for my tablet use cases.

Devs should probably be careful that buttons and links aren't smack in the middle of the crease, at least at first.
