I think people keep posting $2000 in an effort to manifest that price. I am betting closer to $2200-2300.
Then, I’m afraid it will sell poorly, just like the Air (or worse). I mean, we’re no longer in 2017 when people was ready to spend one thousand bucks. We’re approaching another recession, $2299 is not the same as $999, and smartphones are an already mature market.

People bought the price jump on the first anniversary for many reasons and in a context that was quite different from now. Also, foldables aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but that’s a whole different debate.

I think they need at add the telephoto camera. It seems like they could fit a 3rd camera by extending the bump all the way across the top of the device.

I would miss FaceID, but I am ok as long as we get TouchID. MagSafe would be nice, but whatever. The rest of the compromises are fine with me.

If it wasn’t foldable would have been interested in it: dummy looks much smaller than regular iPhones and I hate Face ID anyway. No LiDAR would have been great as well. This 3:2 or 4:3 aspect ratio is much better for enjoying content.

Foldable will always be foldable and will always have issues. It won’t be waterproof, hinge will collect dust over the years of active use, it is a device that is afraid of sand, dust and dirt. And foldable is the main dealbreaker

None of these are deal breakers for me.

You can add MagSafe with a case. So unless you are team no-case, that one is not an issue.

I could do without MagSafe and action button, and have had rain for years, but, no FaceID and no telephoto are an absolute non-starter for me so I will definitely pass this year, assuming all this is indeed true.

No telephoto camera lenses is a no go for me. Reason why I skipped the air. I’m not going from my 15 pro to a worse camera . It’s my only camera and I find I use the zoom way more than ultra wide.
Regarding the telephoto lens, if the foldable iPhone features a 200-megapixel 1/1.12" image sensor main lens, it can comfortably center crop to achieve a 4x zoom. While this fails to match the 8x center crop from the telephoto lens of the current 17 Pro, it could satisfy some of the would-be critics.

I have issues with eyesight so here is my .02
I am interested in a folding phone.. I find the Max phones just not big enough.
I paid a pretty high price for the 15 Pro Max 1tb. I think i could have gotten a Macbook Pro.

I am not willing to sacrifice Face ID, Mag Safe, 3rd Camera for a foldable. I would like one.. But its to high of price for leaving out so much of what i have.

Guess i wait. Just hoping that Gen1 is not such a big failure that Gen2 and 3 never see the light of day.

What problem does a foldable iPhone solve that makes the crazy high cost and feature sacrifices worth it? Is a slightly larger screen worth no MagSafe, no Touch ID, and inferior camera system? It doesn’t even seem usable with one hand.
The inner screen has a 60% larger area than the Pro Max, about the same relative difference the Pro Max has to the iPhone mini. Of course, the other points still stand.

It's hard to see the market here. You are giving up most everything iPhone has added in the last 5 years for something not quite as nice as an iPad mini.

I found the idea of a foldable interesting. I've seen A (1) Samsung in the wild. And I'm sure there is a niche for this - probably people that watch too many videos. But every leak has made me less and less interested in owning.
Keep telling you, folks.

Come back to revisit this at the third iteration
I think this is dead on. The worst part is it seems likely at least half these disqualifications are intentional so they will have an upgrade path in 364 days.

Two years from now when they make in ONE mm thicker and add back in the telephoto camera (almost the only one I ever use) and MagSafe, then they might have something! They'll even have room to put the 36 gauge wire over to the volume buttons.

Not much of a photo taker and the wide "passport-style" aspect ratio would be perfect for reading. If they can offer this in 2TB like the 17 Pro Max for my music hoarding I'm sold. Also Touch ID is so so much better than Face ID. Only real killer here is presumably the lack of MagSafe
