Apple's foldable "iPhone Ultra" will likely support MagSafe charging, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said in an interview with Tom's Guide.

iPhone Ultra dummy models that surfaced in April didn't include a MagSafe ring, while dummies of the iPhone 18 Pro did. Leaked cases for the device did have a MagSafe ring, making it unclear whether it would support MagSafe charging.

"All indications that I've heard is that MagSafe is in for this foldable phone. They were able to get it into the iPhone Air, and I don't see why they wouldn't be able to get it into the foldable," said Gurman.

Leaving out MagSafe was plausible because the iPhone Ultra is supposedly super thin, measuring 4.5mm when open. The device does not have room for Face ID camera hardware, and it is rumored to use Touch ID instead.

Gurman recapped several other iPhone Ultra rumors:
  • $2,000+ price tag
  • 5.5-inch outer display (when closed)
  • 7.8-inch inner display (when unfolded)
  • Short and wide passport-style design
  • Latest Apple modem (likely C2)
  • Latest Apple chip (A20 Pro)
  • Wide and Ultra Wide camera lenses
  • No telephoto lens
  • Durable hinge, minimal but not invisible crease
  • Apple has "gone to great lengths" to make apps automatically resize to fit different displays
Apple will announce the foldable iPhone alongside the iPhone 18 Pro models at its "Surprise and Shine" event set to be held on Wednesday, September 9. While there have been rumors that the foldable iPhone could be delayed and launch after the iPhone 18 Pro models, Gurman says he would be "very surprised" if the foldable did not come out at the same time as the Pro iPhones or "very close to it."

"Either on the same launch date, a dual launch, or coming out within weeks later. This idea of a late October, November launch, massive delays, supply chain issues, I don't believe to be the case," he said.

Had no idea there was ever a rumor of it not containing magsafe. If anything, I would be less surprised if they decided to remove the physical port.

Congratulations to the hat industry on the spike in sales from people eating their hats when the foldable iPhone is announced.

That's not based on any actual information. It's pure speculation, and yet... what's the headline? "likely has MagSafe"

I swear the world is getting dumber by the day.

Meh. We’re into peak “leak” / rumours phase. In a little over a week, Apple will announce what they have, so it’s the the “going out of business” sale by rumourmongers etc.

Their window for getting attention for what they’re selling is closing.

Ignore it all, treat it as entertainment, in 8 days we’ll actually have facts.

It never even crossed my mind that it wouldn’t, but in retrospect the lack of MagSafe in the 16E was bewildering.

Either it was in the Ultra all along or someone learned a very silly lesson.

They’re literally never was, there was some schematics that didn’t include a glass cutout for it, and Mac rumors posters ran with it.
Same people also assume that because Samsung didn’t have MagSafe in their foldable, that Apple wouldn’t, because… Reasons, I guess?
So happy this dumb, stupid, not supported by any evidence, rumor has finally been squashed

Same thoughts. Make it as a thin as possible when folded, even if that means ditching the physical port. MagSafe fast charges well enough.

I do need Face ID though, I'd be fine with a slightly deeper camera bump on the back if they could locate the Face ID on the open side into the position of the bump. Face ID doesn't need to be centred, it can be in a corner.

What are the rumors for the waterproofing?
Given that almost every other foldable has waterproofing, plus European regulations that state that waterproofing is a reason that batteries don’t have to be repairable, you can bet that it will be waterproof.
The entire line of Samsung galaxy foldables is waterproof, the pixel foldables are waterproof, most of the Chinese foldables are waterproof, the iPhone fold will absolutely be waterproof.

I'd like to see normal sized iPhone which will fold in a half and I can carry in my pocket without a case. Not foldable iPad mini.
