Items I would rather see first:
an apple watch with cellular not needed to be paired with a iPhone.
an iPad mini with phone capabilities.

Steve will twist in his grave if Apple are serious about doing this foldable phone. Whats the reason? - just because Samsung are doing something doesn't mean that anyone should copy that ..... I know that has been going on for years. I love Apple but when it comes to the iPhones/iPads the technology is running away from Apple ... phones are getting SO expensive and they are - sorry to say it .. far behind the technology from other brands. Literally we get a new iPhone every 2 years and that's just too slow (S models are just fairly upgraded from the base model)

We had a "revolutionary" product with the first iPhone .... I'm just waiting for the next one!! And please don't pair 2 iPhones to make another copy product please ....

Of course not. It will be completely "free of charge", like these from Samsung or Huawei
Oh, I forgot! It makes news only when Apple charges high prices, for others is totally justifiable!

I wasn't meaning it as a bad thing. Apple is in the money making business and they do it well by making great products.

It seems Apple *has* to make a foldable iPhone to be able to "keep up" with the competition.

Making it will also create the idea that Apple is copying, not innovating.

Sure, Apple wil make a better foldable iPhone (what shall we call it... FiPhone? iPhone F? iPhone FSX Max?) than the current offerings.. but still...

Samsung and Huawei are having screen issues? The phones are not even out yet.........

Yea, both phones had creased/wrinkly screens down the middle. It's certainly possible they would get the issues resolved prior to launch, but the fact that they showed off their phones with obvious defects like this makes me think it is kind of an expected downside of the tech in its current form.

Apple does not give a **** about being first, and make no mistake, they are experimenting with this sort of stuff on their secret labs.
Apple will only jump on this bandwagon if it sees there is a demand. Just look how long it took Apple to increase the display size on their iPhones or have an OLED display.
Apple will wait patiently, learn from others mistake, work to improve and then strike.

Then why does Apple accuse of other Companies copying them?

or its just a pile of nonsense this foldable craze because all mfn's are out of ideas with current tech.

In a patent application published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office today, titled "Electronic Devices With Flexible Displays," Apple explains that foldable smartphone displays could be prone to damage when bent in cold temperatures, and describes various heating methods to mitigate the issue.

For example, Apple says the portion of the display that bends could be heated by lighting up the pixels in that area of the screen. Alternatively, a "heating element or other heating structure" could be used, although Apple wasn't specific.

If they weren't specific then why should they get a patent?

Just for saying "use warm to avoid cold... on a mobile device".

Keep trollin' Apple.

I think a folding display is an iterative idea on flat displays in general.

However, my guess is Apple is looking past folding and instead at AR/MR hardware that makes “bigger” better displays irrelevant.

They said if folding displays become a thing Apple may have to change its product lineup to accommodate demand.

I apologize. I thought that was part of the new meme that has been going around this board regarding Apel's high prices, which indeed they are high but it is not like the competition does over much cheaper alternatives.

Their foldable iPhone patents go back to at least 2014. They’ve been working on this for quite a while, something that tech “journalists” will ignore when the inevitable “Apple is releasing this to catch up” articles come around.

Am I the only person wondering why we need foldable iPhones?

nope, i wonder the same thing. i personally like phones now (aside from them being super thin, which is fixed with a nice leather case).. if i wanted a bigger screen i'd buy an iPad.

It is simple! Because they do.
For example, if Apple was to make a foldable device say in 2 or 3 years from now, you would be mad to say Apple is copying Samsung or Houwei. However, if Apple decided to come up with a foldable that resembles any of the existing products on the market (designwise or otherwise), that would be another story. There is an infinite way of designing something, inspiration is fine but copying is no good,
I find it quite halirious when people say Apple copied Samsung with iPhone display sizes! I mean how stupid can it get? You can not patent a size! You just can't!

i'll bite..

companies release a product/feature/whatever, discontinue it.. few years later apple does it, makes it better, then companies copy apple.

fingerprint readers were in phones years before the iPhone 5S, but they were slow, implementation was bad and just overall useless so companies stopped putting them into phones... until apple did it and everyone copied how they did it.

So, because others are making foldable phones, Apple somehow decided last year they are gonna make one too?

I don't think Apple is typically (aside from patents early on), but more so people on this forum. That's probably because there are examples where their designs are copied to an extent (not fully). For example, see what phones looked like prior to iPhone X and after iPhone X from the bulk on Android manufacturers. I'd say the word copied gets thrown around too much, it happens to Apple, it happens by Apple too, but they are usually the ones moving the needle when it comes to design.
