The heating element would have to be extremely energy efficient otherwise it would drain the battery. It would be interesting to see how this develops.

Good to see Apple looking for solutions to issues with foldable screens prior to releasing. Samsung and Huawei should have done the same.
Phil, is that you??? I’m convinced you work for Apple in some capacity...or you’re their biggest fanboy. Every post you make is in full support of every decision they make, regardless if it’s right or wrong.

There’s no doubt there’s going to be issues with these first generation foldable devices, just like Apple will have when they eventually release one.

Products like this need to get into the market to understand how consumers use them and what needs to be improved upon...there’s a reason these are priced as luxury devices and not flagships...only people with money to waste will buy them.

Apple’s latest phones have terrible LTE/WiFi connections compared to their older devices, due to their petty dispute with Qualcomm. So it seems like Apple can create issues for problems they’ve never had before...no need to trash Samsung and Huawei for products that aren’t even in consumer’s hands yet.

I can see the use of a foldable iPad, but I don't know if I would want or need a foldable phone. We went from thinner and sleeker, to hey let's introduce a phone that's doubly thick so you can unfold it.

It's been in process before Apple, Motorola has had a patent for this exact thing since June of last year but it was to combat creasing.

Why would you want a foldable iPad over iPhone? The whole point of it is to have a bigger screen in the same mobile package.

It is simple! Because they do.
For example, if Apple was to make a foldable device say in 2 or 3 years from now, you would be mad to say Apple is copying Samsung or Houwei. However, if Apple decided to come up with a foldable that resembles any of the existing products on the market (designwise or otherwise), that would be another story. There is an infinite way of designing something, inspiration is fine but copying is no good,
I find it quite halirious when people say Apple copied Samsung with iPhone display sizes! I mean how stupid can it get? You can not patent a size! You just can't!
People completely forget HTC started the big phone trend and Samsung copied them.

Went thru all the posts, where is AngerDanger?

It’s been 1 and 1/3 days since he logged in. Half-concerned. Hope he’s okay. :(

Mind you he’s more than likely out in Vegas, munching a man-sized cigar, with a beautiful woman draped on each arm. These GIF makers are pretty desired-after people.

Yea, both phones had creased/wrinkly screens down the middle. It's certainly possible they would get the issues resolved prior to launch, but the fact that they showed off their phones with obvious defects like this makes me think it is kind of an expected downside of the tech in its current form.
When Jobs showed the iPhone to the world, it was also a prototype and the staff was expecting it to fail at anytime. Saying only Apple tests its products it's a bit too much.

“The foldable smartphone era is in full swing”... no it’s not. Has a foldable device sold in the millions of units? No!

Macrumors journalism is rubbish sometimes.

I didn't say only Apple tests their products? Obviously Samsung and Huawei test their products, but I guess they felt that a screen crease was okay for their customers.

That's cool by me too, just as long as they fix any issues before ever considering releasing a foldable screen.

Not at all. If Apple released a phone with a crease right down the middle, I wouldn't be happy either. If you are totally fine to accept that because it's a first generation, you have every right to, but it's not for me. I have the latest iPhone and my LTE and Wifi connection are just fine, doubled in speed from the X to the XS actually on LTE.

It seems Apple *has* to make a foldable iPhone to be able to "keep up" with the competition.

Making it will also create the idea that Apple is copying, not innovating.

Sure, Apple wil make a better foldable iPhone (what shall we call it... FiPhone? iPhone F? iPhone FSX Max?) than the current offerings.. but still...

Given the proximity to the launch of Apple Glasses in 2020, overlapping (pardon the pun) foldable display development, I can see Apple skipping folding phones entirely and moving towards virtual displays via retinal projection with glasses.

one day in the future, we'll all look back at the old tech of 2019 and smile at the lameness that was folding phones...just as we do with 8-tracks today.
