Apple's first foldable iPhone will be equipped with a 7.8-inch inner display, and a 5.5-inch outer display, according to Taiwanese research firm TrendForce.

Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo already mentioned those same display sizes for the foldable iPhone in March, meaning there are now multiple sources backing those sizes, so long as TrendForce is not simply copying what Kuo said.

Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7 has an 8-inch inner screen, and a 6.5-inch outer screen.

TrendForce said Apple will likely launch the foldable iPhone in the second half of 2026, so the device could debut in September of next year.

Last week, Kuo said the foldable iPhone (and Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8) will feature a "crease-free" inner display. He said Apple will achieve this feat by using a laser-drilled metal display plate, which can disperse the stress generated by bending.

Kuo expects the foldable iPhone to have two rear cameras, one front camera, and a Touch ID power button instead of Face ID.

I understand the frustrations with Cook and the lack of innovation while going all in on Vision Pro. And I also get being annoyed that Samsung is already on their 5th (?) gen foldable. But Apple always plays the long game and waited for the bend/hinge technology to be good enough for Apple, and here we are. I’m excited and looking forward to finally see something different than the typical rectangle phone. We’re here as enthusiasts for the latest rumors, after all.

That’s a really small outer screen. How do they get a 7.8” screen that’s close to that of the Samsung ZFold 7 when their outer screens are so different? What is the aspect ratio of that phone? I would have assumed Apple’s striving for a 4:3 like they do for their iPads. Should that be 6.5” outer screen, not 5.5”, Trendforce? 5.5” is awfully tiny.

I retract what I said. I just measured the iPad mini’s screen, which cut in half when in landscape is about 3.5” wide. Take that half screen and measure the diagonal and you get 5.7”. Since the mini has an 8.3” screen versus the 7.8” expected here, 5.5” makes sense. I guess it is the aspect ratio that results in such a small outer screen.

Samsung can get a bigger screen because it is closer to 3:4 on the inside rather than the 4:3 Apple will likely strive for. Samsung’s screen is closer to cutting the mini in half when in portrait mode. I measured the portrait half of a mini of about 2.25” and got a diagonal of 7.3”. Samsung isn’t quite 4:3, so that probably accounts for the difference. Apple’s outer screen will be wider but shorter.

We need to see mockups and comparisons.

Just saying X.X" without discussing aspect ratios doesn't really paint a picture.

It's like when Cadillac was bragging about the 32" infotainment display in the new Escalade.

But that's quite a bit different than the 32" TV in my bedroom...

🤣
If it’s anything like the mini cut in half in landscape, the Apple Foldable will be about 3.5” wide and 4.5” tall. That’s pretty short and wide. In comparison, the ZFold will probably be about 2.5” wide and 6” tall. Apple’s may feel too wide to fit in the hand comfortably.

So a smaller out display is smaller the Samsung one. Samsung will be better. It’s perfect the size now. 5.5 is to small for our display and 7.8 isn’t much bigger
Any phone company setting a new phone size is like threading a needle. The customer wants a phone that is tiny until used then magically big. Can't have that so they find some compromise and will ALWAYS satisfy some and not others.

I realize that this is *just me* but I spend probably < 50 mins/day on my phone, at most, and we already tried the hiptop thing on the 00’s and outside of that one popular Verizon phone that folded in two axis’.

Does anyone need this?

I rather think the Air/razr redux is going to be wildly more popular.

5.5 is only the measurement diagonally, it says absolutely nothing about the aspect ratio.
Rumor is that the internal display will be 7.8 inches with a 4X3 aspect ratio. so almost identical to the iPad mini fifth generation and previous.
The outside display is likely to take on a much shorter but much wider 3X2 aspect ratio.
so it’s likely that even while it might only measure at 5.5 inches diagonally, the actual usable screen space will be a lot more similar to today’s Pro Max than a Mini.

not really comparable to Samsung‘s solution, which is that the outside display is tall and narrow. apple’s outside display will be short and wide.
