It’s a new type of device. It’s not bound by past platform limitations, which considering it’s Apple are often arbitrary.

Apple sure as 💩 ain’t Samsung and you would be lucky to get $100 or so off a brand new premium product. The Apple foldable iPhone is going to be a very pricey item🤑 The 16PM starts at $1200.00. Can you imagine what their new flipper is going to cost? I’d venture to say, most likely the most expensive smartphone we’ve ever seen.
Exactly.

RRP, the 16PM starts at 2150 down here, and the fold7 starts at 3100. Yet without even trying too hard, you'll be able to pick up either at around the same price.

I mean, sammy could've just as easily launched it at 2500 and kept discounting minimal on their flagship device; but here we are.

Downside is; it gives apple ammo to price theirs at the same; or even slightly higher price citing that "their competitors price their foldables similar" (even if they don't sell for that) and the apple users have to stump full rrp. And it'll still sell like hotcakes.

Honestly i wouldn't be surprised at all if demand outstrips supply and some start being scalped for above rrp to people keen on the new form factor.

Technically, Samsung doesn't really give discounts to their base Fold. They give incentives such as large trade-in values and credit to buy other stuff. This time around, Samsung offered up to $1000 for trade-ins, depending on phone type. To get the max, you would need to trade in either a Fold 5 or 6. The credit would have been for a good discount on their Galaxy Buds. They did give a free upgrade to 512GB from the base 256GB. However the phone itself wasn't discounted. If you didn't trade-in or for some reason chose 256GB, it would still have cost $1999.

They do start to lose their value quickly. Within a year, you'd be able to buy one for just over half price, something that doesn't typically happen to iPhones.

I personally bypassed Samsung this time around and went to ATT, which gave me a $1100 trade-in on any phone I had no matter the type or condition. I traded in an S10+, a six year old phone worth barely over $100 and got the full trade-in value. For the iPhone 17 series, if ATT does it again, I'll trade in my iPhone 11 Pro with shattered screen. I should have traded that one in instead, but I had forgotten about it until afterwards. I did check and it would have gotten the full $1100 despite the screen.

Samsung does give better perks than Apple but only at pre-order. They don't discount their phone, though.

They do discount though, but you do need to know where to look.

Right now samsung are offering 20% off if you're with westpac. No trade in req. But a $600 trade in bonus if you do.

Commbank have something similar too; and this is all before caking on newsletter vouchers and other codes.

Telstra also have 20% off IIRC, assuming you are already with them. No trade in req.

Unsure about the other telcos, i haven't looked.

Edit: Just checked, Voda & optus have different offers, but not a straight up discount like telstra.

Ah you’re in Australia. I don’t know anything about that country, but in the US, I have yet to see any discounts of any kind. Deals with trade-ins and discounts on bundles, yes, but flat out discounts, no. Here in the US, the best way to get discounts is to wait for Amazon or Best Buy or a carrier to have a deal. From what I’ve seen, the deals are always best during the pre-order period. Once that’s over, the deals tend to be worse, but not always bad.

For instance, during pre-order, ATT was offering $1100 on any trade-in. Now that the phone has shipped, the offer for trade-in is down to $800 for any phone, including broken ones.

haha, all good. I was talking in teh context of Aus earlier, and when you pipped in i thoguht you were a fellow mate.

But yeah samsung are nortorious for this down here. I bought my wife's s10+ on a 30% off pre-order offer, and a couple years later her flip4 on similar.

Seems like the best pre-order outright deal down here at the moment (without a carrier) once you cake on all the coupons and codes is $1829 AUD for the 256; after trading in any broken phone; which is nuts compared to the $3099 retail.
For reference; a iphone 16 pro 128gb is $1799 AUD; not the pro max, just the regular pro.

sadly apple don't do similar, but work pays for my iphone anyway.

Ah, I hadn’t noticed your country. Sorry. You’re absolutely right Apple doesn’t ever do anything of the sort. A huge discount for them is a $100 gift card to buy more Apple stuff, but not a discount on the actual device, whatever it is. From what I can tell, their trade-ins tend to be sub-par. It’ll cost a fortune to buy one of their foldable iPhones but I suppose you don’t have to do that every year, and the carriers may offer some better deals. I do have a ton of phones to trade in, though. Maybe my carrier will offer me something similar for my old, cracked iPhone? :)

They do discount but only in countries where sales start lagging; like china. For countries like Aus & USA where iphone sales dominate, tehre's no chance

That iphone fold is going to be eyewateringly expensive i'm sure.
