I remember a while back someone posted a mistake in his MBP order as well (he got a better one). He brought it back and they asked him if he would mind keeping it and then offered him store credit or something.

The right thing to do would be to explain the problem and return it.

My advice: keep it; not worth yours or Apples trouble to get it sorted.

Amazing luck by the way!

x2

The right thing is obviously to return it, but that would still be a problem for Apple as the box has now been opened and thus cannot be sold as "new". So, either way they will take a *small* loss for their mistake. Don't worry about the guy who gets your serial number, unless he/she is a complete idiot, they will discover that they got the wrong model, and Apple will fix it for them without a problem. RedDragon said it best, the right thing to do is return it, my advice is to keep it... you lucky git.

What does it profit a man to gain 100 mHz, 50 GB, and 256 megs of VRAM if he loses his soul?

I hope that makes the choice easier for you.

Joking aside they wouldn't make you bring it back once you have put some data on it. There is no way you could have known what the specs are before opening it and looking at it. It is now a used computer.

Call Apple and be honest about it, I suspect they'll just let you keep it. To be honest you should do what you think is right though.

The right thing to do would be to return it. It was an honest mistake. 'Course I'd probably want to keep it too if I was in your position. They might get suspicious if you take in for repairs, and your reciept shows that its supposed to be the base model though.

They don't check receipts. You register the computer with Apple and that's that. They will have no way of knowing what you paid/were supposed to get.

Things I would have done: Kept it.

Things I would not have done: Posted on here about it.

Things I wouldn't let happen in the future: Let people talk you out of keeping it.

You got lucky, now enjoy. :)

Keep it and don't look back. Their fault for screwing up. Apple's fault.

Enjoy your new beast!

Exactly, and if someone who ordered a 2.5 gets a 2.4, they will undoubtedly take it to the Apple store and get a 2.5. So everyone is happy, especially the OP. Lucky !!

If returning it even crosses your mind you're an imbecile. I would keep it an register the serial # on the computer to Applecare, that's it.

I've had more than one occassion where someone at a register rang in my purchase incorrectly (in my favor), so I let them know and paid the correct amount. I don't think myself an imbecile for doing the right thing.

::steps down from high horse::

I still think you should keep it. As I said before, Apple can no longer sell it as new, and it's unlikely worth the trouble for them. Plus, Apple is a huge company that charges a hefty premium on it's products. They will suffer a minimal loss for your gain. If a large company like wal-mart mistakenly charged me too little for a purchase, and I didn't find out until I got home, I wouldn't go running back to the store. The core of the situation, however, is to do what you think is right.

I wouldn't let them know, that's just me though.

Please enlighten me if I have misread your post but if this person you mentioned got a better MBP in the first place and decided to take it back why would the store offer him a credit for keeping it? He already got over in the first place.

I totally agree.

When I read this I text my 71 year old mum and told her. Her reply was lucky guy and hope he's going to keep it.

Don't worry about the other guy. It's unlikely that the two computers who's boxes got swapped ended up at the same store so when he reports the error to Apple (if that even happens, there's a large percentage of people who never check "About This Mac") Apple will see that your box serial number was sold from a store far away from his location. Registering your computer with Apple will also show that the box's serial number has already been registered and they'll put 2 and 2 together and realize they are not being scammed, and the other guy will get his computer.

If they were to contact you about it (unlikely) they will probably send a form letter apologizing for the mistake. There's no way they will ask for the computer back since they have no idea what you've done to it so if they got it back it would cost them more than the $500 price difference to re-verify that everything works and they can't sell it new.

This is the right thing to do. I do not think they will take it back. It would be nice to get your paperwork straight incase there is a problem in the future.

Oh God, I just finished my last set of law school exams EVER (except the bar)... way to give me flashbacks to 1L property law.

;)

So is it true that by law I'm entitle to keep it with no legal consequences?

Anyhow, I've already activated my Apple care.

What I'm thinking is to call up the store, anonymously, and ask them what to do. I think this would be the best plan.

Will keep you guys posted.

I havee to say, this is one sweet MBP, yeah right, I'm posting this on my new MBP!:D

Dude, here is some good advice. Shut the heck up, stop posting in this thread, put down the phone and enjoy your MACBOOK!

Enjoy your new MBP!!

Check if they charged you only for the base model... (as a poster said before, something like this happened, Went to the store and told the truth, Apple said he could keep it since it was their mistake and i think they gave him store credit or something)

One in million (or thousands)... you got lucky :)

I think that even if you get in touch with Apple they will just apologize and let you keep it.

Indeed they will.

Same thing happened to me recently except I got the "worse" version.

Opened up the Finder to see my HD was half the size I'd ordered. Thought WTF! Checked my other CTO options to find some there, some not.

Called Apple who asked for the serial number. They said are you Mr Y? I said no I'm Mr X.

After a bit of to-ing and fro-ing they swapped out my machine for the correct one and gave me a bit of a rebate.

Very nicely done on their part and the other guy got a free upgrade. Apple told me that they couldn't take the machine back from him so the loss was on their part.

Try to search for the post, I have patience to do it.

Basically, Apple like all other big companies make up for their mistakes whether it being good or bad, hence rewarding him with store credit and asking him to keep it.
