Well, go to mac.com and sign up for a trial. If you can get jbaker@mac.com for the trial, sign up for it ASAP. Once you register on the trial, it's your username forever, wether you renew or not.I'm not sure yet. I know I won't be able to get "jbaker" due to existing .mac users getting first priority. I won't be able to set it up until I get the DVD in the mail in 3-5 days. I believe periods are accepted characters, so I'm sure I'll be able to work out something that's not too bad.
Remember that only the main account holder gets all the services -- sync, backup, idisk, etc., while the other "family members" get an email account and mot much else.

Sorry, but I think that you'll be out of luck with a discount. It can be rather difficult to discount free stuff. But I'd gladly let them pay me to upgrade. With the family pack, you get more iDisk space, so it wasn't a total waste. That's just if you're planning on using it for personal use. If not, I'd see if I could cancel that order. If not, you could always sell it on the macrumors marketplace.Hopefully they'll offer a discounted upgrade plan for those accounts that won't get sync and backup. I'll have to talk it over with a rep when it's closer to launch and more info is known I guess.

Did you by chance register your computer when you first got it with the .mac trial? If so, there's an easy fix to rid the account from your computer.I had already registered for a trial previously using a username that I definitely don't want to use in the future. Whenever I go to mac.com, that name shows up in the username field, and I don't see an option to sign up for a trial. Any help?
Oh. Well, you should probably know that the terms of the EULA require all five users to reside at the same location. What I meant about the "discount" was, rather than each of the sub-accounts I set-up having to pay $99, they could get $10 or something off because I have in a way already paid for those accounts. I doubt it'd happen, but it's worth giving it a shot to save a couple bucks.
To be honest, its nothing that special. Sidekicks have had instant OTA sync sense the beginning.
HUGE PROBLEM.
As of right now, .Mac doesn't allow for you to "send mail as" another e-mail address. So if you have a business like me (person@randomstore.com) and you use .Mac, any e-mails you send out say person@mac.com or me.com instead of your business name.
I hope this is one thing they fix in the future so that I can use MobileMe to the fullest as I am not trying to confuse clients with 2 different e-mail addresses just for push mail.
My 2 cents.
Ah, well it's too late to cancel my order, so I guess I'll just send it back, eat the shipping cost, and buy the $70 single user account.
Guess my scheme failed. Live and learn I guess.![]()
There used to be a program by which you could convert .mac family plan members to their own accounts, not sure if it still works that way, or if that is what you are looking for. I did that with my daughter when she went to college and wanted to do her own web gallery and iweb pages.
I apologize, I think I was confusing the famiy plan with the individual plan with email subaccounts I have. I think the individual plan gets extra email addresses for free or a small fee. The faily plan on .mac does offer all services or so it appears rom this from Apple:
Q: What does the .Mac Family Pack include?
The .Mac Family Pack includes a master account with all the great features mentioned above, including 10 GB of online storageplus four sub-accounts for family members. Each sub-account gets its own email address, 2.5 GB of online storage for email and files, and full access to .Mac services. You also get a dedicated iDisk folder for sharing files between family members. The master account administers the sub-accounts and membership can only be renewed through the master account.
Sorry for the confusion. Now, sharing an account with friends might still be a problem...
i hadnt thought of this...if you cant sync up gmail/other personal accounts...then .me loses almost all of its appeal to me.
i have .mac now but dont use the email address at all.
i imagine a lot of people will want to use their existing addresses and not .mac or .me addresses...
edit: when i watched the guided tour, i pictured being able to 'set up' the website the same way Mail or Entourage is setup...then you can have whatever email accounts you want in there. is that not how this is going to work?
