I find there's also something far more relatable to the alternate reality 60's and 80's space tech and political environment - as opposed to yet another near-future setting with some rather implausible-sounding technological advancements thrown in to make the story work. Seen that so often already.

I agree. However, I would like Season 5 to tackle AI and robots in the future with political adversary!

I can certainly see the parallels with the modern world in the current season but to be honest this series left me a bit "blah".

I skipped through a lot of the space colony bits quickly and focused more on the Earth based parts.
 
I enjoyed the first season the most so far

I guess it's just modern TV, but everything jumps around so much and the timeline moves so quickly (a function of only having so many episodes in a season now) that I'm left wanting..

So many micro stories and narratives never get fleshed out as they once did in shows of the past
 
Season three devolved into such trash that I didn’t even bother with season four. North Korean probe was the moment where I literally said “oh F off” and removed the series from my watch list. I know FAM has never been “hard” sci-fi but that was just complete horse sh*t and I was done.

They are going to do a spin-off based on the Soviet side of the space race early on so we might see some things expanded that way.

I struggled to watch this first episode. It’s small stakes family drama, nothing about big stakes. Actors are very bad, they seem to read lines , without emotion. And the make it looks pretty bad, so are the visual effects of Mars.
 
I wasn't all that impressed with the first episode. For me, it's lost that clever and nuanced, "what would the space race and world look like if the Soviets got to the moon first?" and has spilled over to silly. We are to believe that hurricane Katrina would have only been a tropical storm if only the communists planted their flag first? Just dumb. I'll still watch of course, so hopefully I can get sucked back in!

Isn't that more due to the much earlier (and wide scale) replacement of fossil fuels? Still fanciful of course but at least its nice to have something optimistic from a sci-fi show.

Looking like Ed sacrificed himself for a friend.

An honorable way to go if so.

I mean, he was going anyways with the cancer, so I’m glad to see he made a difference one more time.

A little bit of Kirk in Generations vibe to it, which is unsurprising given Ron Moores connection to that also.

I guess its just an iteration of the Newtons, so in this world there are no iPhones just Newtons.

Episode 3 has become one of my all time favorite episodes and by far the best episode so far this season. The writers seems to have gone back to the motivations and theme of the show with this one.

Have to agree ... more woke nonsense with stale actors. Do disagree about the visuals.

S5 E3 - best episode of this season and maybe the best since season 3 and maybe one of the best in the entire series. Nuff said.
 
I was ready to say this jumped the shark, but episode 3 was very good. I think they should have skipped E1 and started right in with 2 and 3 maybe even combined the two into one longer premiere. Slow walking the events of the first 3 episodes did not make the storyline ending in E3 any more impactful.

The other thing that is hard now that we’re so diverged from our own reality now, there is no point of reference or suspense for the science and technical issues.
 
Apple have finally made an appearance this season anyway, the Newton has survived in this timeline and morphed into a chunky iPhone, plus Dev had an iMac on his desk.

Yup, in this week’s episode there are 27” iMacs, Magic keyboards and there is the Magic Mouse.
 
Episodes 5 and 6 might be the silliest of the series. The stage setup, props, and acting are amateur. Someone else said it above, the distance from our actual timeline make any of the scientific challenges too easy to overcome and aren’t really part of the story.
