I went caseless for a while.

Then the free bumper.

While the bumper provides nice grip the execution of it all is a bit of an afterthought.

If the rubber grip had been incorporated the way it was on the BB Curve it would have been perfect.

I've tried to like it but I just love the look of the iP4 as-is and the bumper was continually sticking in my pocket.

Long ago (pre-RAZR days even) I've had only phone and leather wallet in the pocket so a naked phone is fine.

I used the clear case provided by the Apple free case program and also used another black case that I got for free as well. I hate them both. Actually, I still use the black case for when I go running as it gives me a good grip but the clear case scratched easily (and showed it) and easily attracted dust and other stuff between the phone and the case.

This ended up making the phone look dirty all the time so I just got rid of it and went case less again and I like it. My phone may have a few minor scratches that can be seen in the sunlight but other than that it looks brand new. I don't plan on using a case ever again on this phone.

I only go caseless when I'm at home...I have carpet throughout my place. Whenever I step foot outside, my case is back on my phone. That one drop can cause my iPhone retail value to drop significantly. I am always thinking about the future because I always sell my iPhone on eBay to buy the next one.

What do you do as far as placing your phone down?

I just put it down.

I don't mean to sound glib, but I've been an iPhone user for almost two and a half years and nothing bad has happened yet from setting it down.

I've yet to meet a case I liked. If I ever found one I guess I'd consider it, but after 2 years I've kind of given up hope. I don't think it's possible.

And yes, I dropped my 3G once and had to pay to replace the back. Ok...so what? That wasn't much more than most of these cases cost. (I think I paid about $45 for it.) I'd rather pay that every now and then than have a phone in a case I hate.

The on case that I will swear by anything is none other than...

the silly rubber cases you get from the little kiosks in the mall. I had my iPhone 3G for 2 years and that rubber case protected the back from all scratches. I literally threw my phone on the ground one time. As I was moving the phone from my ear to end the call the phone slipped on the way down and landed flat on its back and slid a little ways. I took off the case, held it in the light, and there was not one scratch. I love it. I went back when I got my iPhone 4 and got a nice rubber black one. Covers the back and all sides perfectly.
