... It's like saying the new renault megane is £11,999 but BRITON ALSO HAVE TO FUEL THE CAR THEMSELVES AND TAX IT AND INSURE IT!!! This brings the total cost to £50,000!...
Apples and oranges. The two are not the same thing. Mobiles phones have been subsidized for ages. There's no deal out there for a car costing less because you're paying more for fuel and insurance? The iPhone has a premium cost and a rather lousy tariff. The two together are really quite ridiculous. Plus other things which just irritate me about this whole thing, such as the 40% profit going to Apple while O2 pass that cost onto the customer. The whole thing is really kind of shady. Greedy twunts.

i'm currently on 3 but really wouldn't benefit by putting my 3 sim into an iphone (as there is no 3g! lol)..

my current contract ends on jan 7th, but i could end my contract (not sure how much i'd have to pay - probably the remaining months worth of tariff fees) and get a virgin mobile sim while i await an imported US iphone

is that crazy? or should i really wait until my current contract ends and see what happens at macworld 08?

if I had only to wait til Jan 7th, I'd probably wait...but what you do really depends on your own personal finances and what they say you need to do to get out of a contract at this point.

If it's relatively cheap to bail, and you have the money, sure why not.

When I got my iPhone I ended up going month-to-month for about 4 months on my crappy old LG phone (contract was up) until the iPhone launched. I doubt I would have paid anything extra to get out of an existing contract though.

I asked three recently how much it would cost to cancel the contract and you do have to pay the remaining months worth of line rental. If you can wait, wait, if you can't go for it. I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I may see if Three sims work in iPhones, I read some place that it did, but I can't find it again so I'm holding off until i get further confirmation as Three sim's can be kind of funny in other phones.

In which case I'd just get an iPhone unlock it (which seems to be a-okay seeing as youre paying outright for the phone) use it with my SIM for a while then change to an O2 simplicity tariff later with data usage on it.

Otherwise I'll cancel and go for the O2 simplicity tariff as they seem to be some of the best around for texts and mins at the moment.

This is where I think O2 can win and actually screw apple over a bit. The deal probably is that Apple get some of the $$ for the iPhone contracts only... now, if the iPhone is unlockable, or able to use on other tariffs etc.. O2 can simply just beef up their other tariffs and say.. "hey get this tariff instead with loads of stuff and data" and get (in theory) more money from it as theyre not forking a %age to Apple...

Over on hackint0sh.com some people are saying that UK '3' sims do NOT work. Everyone elses does - voda, o2, orange, t-mobile/virgin.

it's so annoying as I've found a few on eBay that I'd be willing to stretch to - I know it's a premium but I could pick one up tonight. Just the thought of new software coming out that re-locked it to AT&T is not good especially when the UK one isn't that far off (Although too far off for my liking!)

My dilemma exactly!

Hello Nick,

Thank you for emailing us to find out if you'll be able to use your existing iPhone (purchased in the USA) on our network.

It isn't possible to use your existing iPhone on our network, as it'll be locked or latched to your existing Service Provider. You'll need an unlatching or unlocking code from your existing Service Provider. Once your phone is unlocked, you'll be able to use it on our network.

You'll need to visit our website using the link www.o2.co.uk/iphone for the most up to date information on iPhone. Our website is being regularly updated with all the information that's currently available. You should be able to find the answers to your query under the 'iPhone' section on our website.

You can also visit the link below for more information about the iPhone launch in the UK:

Once again we thank you for your interest in iPhone and O2.

I hope you'll find this information useful. If there's anything else we can do for you, please reply to this email.

You can also visit our online help centre at:

Ok so I just got this email from O2! - Do they advocate unlocking? - It seems so!... Im mailing back to see if once unlocked I'll be able to use full O2 features and what tariff i'll need etc.. but it does seem that they don't mind too much about unlocks or indeed tariffs!!!!

That's because of the law over here regarding phone unlocking.

Seeing as you bought the phone (if you buy it on release here) without subsidy of a contract, you are lawfully entitled to have the phone unlocked and use it with whatever network and tariff you wish.

I'd like to know whether Visual Voicemail will work on an unlocked iPhone with an O2 SIM.

just because o2 have the uk iphone i'm 99% sure an o2 sim will not work in a US AT&T iphone, it's like saying that Vodafone and Orange have the Ericsson K800i so any vodafone or orange sim will work in any k800i.

If you get your iphone after the 1.1.1 update is out and it's firmware 1.0.2 out of the box DO NOT UPDATE IT until the hacking groups and indeed users report successful unlocks of that firmware, you may not be able to roll back to a previous firmware and may have an iphone that can't be unlocked...

Hi guys,

Im getting an iphone deliverd this week from the states.

Im an o2 customer, and my contract is up for renewall,so im getting a sony ericsson k850i as part of the deal

my tarriff if i chose to accept will be 1800 mins 500 texts, and free texts sat sun and mon, with an 18 month contract.

O2 said on the phone today(vip data staff) that even if i enter the contract now,i will get the cloud subscription, visual voicemail and all the November stuff,as o2 will be offering a transfer to the iphone plans.

so,heres my dilema. If i have the phone ,put my monthly conract sim in,will everything work ok,without having to unlock it? the uk firmware will be 1.1.1 but im guesing the phone i get from the usa will be 1.0.2,so will the firware just update via itunes, and everything s hunky dory?

i would guess that o2 might be supporting the iphone already, and that if you have an o2 sim,and usa bought iphone, that it would work out of the box wthout unlocking,is that a hopeful scenario?

im happy with o2,but i dont want to wait till november,so what are the pros and cons,or should it be a simple case of,phone will work on o2 now, with my o2 simcard?

I think you may have been a little hasty in going this option, if you want to continue with O2 anyway. I have weighed up the pro's and cons and decided to wait til November (which is going to kill me).

You will have to deal with unlocking and it potentially breaking with that 1.1.1 and any subsequent updates.

Does that deal have data included?

The Tariffs are just so expensive £35 minimum and thats for 18 months.

£900 is expensive for a phone.

When the US ones came out did they accept a pay as you go AT&T sim ?

They didn't accept a random pay as you go AT&T sim, however, there was the option to go pre-pay if you had bad credit. While a lot of people are saying that O2 will not be offering this option over here in the UK, people might want to bear in mind that nobody knew about the pre-pay option with AT&T until *after* the iPhone had launched so the same might end up true over here.

BTW people should really stop listening to the "£900 for a phone" malarkey, its silly journalism. O2 currently offers the BlackBerry Curve 8300 for free with a 24 month £35 contract which actually costs £43.51 per month. By the scare mongering journalists reasoning that phone costs £1044.24.

Incidentally, one thing I just noticed on the O2 Business site is that their business tariffs for the blackberry also have unlimited data. However, the small print says that its bound by a 'fair use policy'. The fair use policy states "Fair usage policy applies and average monthly usage is expected to be below 75MB". I sincerely hope they don't apply that 'fair use policy' to the iPhone. 75mb = ~2.5mb per day = ~25 to 50 modern web pages a day.

I think its 1,400 web pages a day. Whatever that is in MB.

I hope there is a pre pay option, Im shocked the handset isn't subsidised in the UK

Does anyone know if, your contract renewal date isn't until way into next year, that you will be able to get an iPhone? i.e, will I have to serve out my existing contract before I can get an iPhone?

The worry is that there are different ways to estimate the size of a web page. A plain web page with no images can be 1kb. I did just discover that O2 Active's site says that it estimates "40 pages per MB on a 3G Device". By 3G device they mean devices capable of their more rich O2 Active content so that's a good estimate for the iPhone. 1400 web pages a day by that estimation is 35mb a day so about a gig a month. Hopefully that'll be higher though because an album from the iTunes store is about that much and YouTube videos are a fair chunk each.

We're hoping that you'll be able to transfer to an iPhone even if you've upgraded the week before as is the case with AT&T in America.

I really hope so! Otherwise I'm gonna have to do some trickery and swap SIM's and things, I'm with o2 so hopefully it should work.

I don't see why they would say no, I'm paying for the phone and upping my monthly spend but it is o2 after all. I hope I can get an official line on that soon!
