Well, thanks for checking scratches and having a look.

I guess you don't have access to any other macs to test the CD out on and see if it works?

You mentioned you had a PC laptop. Maybe someone here could suggest a simple way of verifying mac CDs on a PC.

MacDisk is one:
http://www.macdisk.com/mden.php3 - it will let you download a demo version to your PC. With the demo, you might be able to see if your 9.0.4 CD is readable.

If the CD is readable on your PC laptop, then I guess it's a problem with the laptop CD drive.

To CanadaRAM - thanks, and I stand corrected. However, we're not yet at the stage where we can think about partitioning the drive.

i figured if i could hear it spinning it was working and that the little bulb was just burned out- could it just simply be that the drive isnt reading the cd? if so - i really do feel like a boob!! i've probably spent about 40 hours trying to get it to work

Reading all of the replies, I would say that although the optical drive is spinning the CD, it is not reading it. If it's 9.0.4 and there are no scratches, then your optical drive is bad. Will cost you more than you paid for the Mac to fix. External optical drives are another option. But that could be a costly dead end.

Good luck

Assuming that the CD is good, and can be read by your other computer, you might try this.

Open the CD drawer on the laptop. Take some compressed air, and aim down in the slot where the laser diode is located and blow.

FWIW, I had a desktop Mac with a tray loading CD drive that could not read a CD or DVD. It had enough dust covering the laser that it could not read the medium. After blowing with compresses air, the drive worked fine. Go figure.
