Obviously we are still in the iOS 11 code & app optimization period, as you should expect smooth-as-butter operation on Apple's 2017 flagship phones.

I'm not excusing the fact that 11 should have been optimized before it reached the hands of consumers, but it is what it is.

Why did you bother posting? I'm asking a question and giving my opinion of another flagship. If you have nothing to contribute look elsewhere. Thank you.

To offer you free advice. Get a Pixel 2 or S8/Note 8 maybe you won't have to deal with any lag at all on those phones...

The 8/8+/X have the same internals. Main differences are on the screen and cameras. The X is driving more pixels than either so unless there is something more to the specs if anything it might be a little slower.

The X should operate at the same speed as the 8 Plus, considering most everything is the same (CPU/RAM).

The X does have to push around 27% more pixels, however.

Theoretically, that could slow things down a hair for the X.

The Plus models already render at the same 3x resolution as the X, but they then downsample the resolution for the 1080p screen. This extra step means that actually the X will use less power to render things on the screen than the Plus

iPhone 8 plus' screen resolution is 1080p but it is actually rendering 2208x1242 pixels (1104 x 621 points, at 2x), before downscaling to 1080p. This equates to around 2.7 megapixels

iPhone x renders natively at 2436x1125 (812x375 points, at 3x). No downscaling necessary though. This equates to around 2.7 megapixels as well.

So theoretically, both the X and the 8 are rendering out the same number of pixels.
Hence why they both have 3GB of RAM, vs iPhone 8's 2GB.

In saying that, the X will theoretically need to load bigger assets, as it'll ask for 3x hidpi images, vs the 8 Plus that will only request 2x hidpi images out of apps. The assets may be interchangable but won't be pixel perfect, at that DPI though, it may not be noticable. Stillsomething to keep in mind. Maybe 3GB may not be enough for developers seeking pixel perfection in their apps? who knows.

There is also a difference in how much computing power is actually required out of faceID.

Hi all,

I only ask because I bought the 8 a few days ago and it is lagging, freezing, skipping bad. It's running 11.0.3 and in 3 days it's been wiped clean, reset as new and still lags. As a matter of fact iOS 7, 8, 9, 10 and so far 11 has lagged.

By lag I mean when I scroll through settings, launch certain apps like camera, mail, news, (all default Apple apps) this iPhone 8 is NOT smooth. Yes I have tried changing reduce motion setting, background app refresh is off, all the unnecessary crap is off. Nothing helps.

So this leads me to thinking the X will be as bad if not worse due to the fact that the X is pushing a LOT more pixels, more technology etc from the exact same A11 chip which tells me the X isn't going to be the rocket ship many think it will be.

I need to swap out this 8 that I have to see if that makes a difference but based on how its acting (like several of my iPhones have) my hopes are low and sad.

ios is now more buggy and laggy than android is. what a great time for apple. who would have thought a brand new iphone would run at 10fps, and that it would take 10 ios 11 betas + 11.0.1 + 11.0.2 + 11.0.3 + 3 betas of 11.1 before 3d touch ran at more than 5fps

I want an iPhone for personal use. I'm just asking Apple to sell iPhones/Operating systems that are polished and well thought out before releasing them to the public. They certainly release enough betas leading one to believe they've worked out all of the bugs....like lag thats been evident for 5 complete iOS releases, at least on our iPhones.

That said, my iPad 10.5 with 4 GB of ram has not lagged one millisecond. My previous iPad with the exact same apps on it and 2 GB of ram lagged very bad. However Apple is greedy, stingy and sold on their belief that their devices run more efficiently and don't require the ram....Gotcha Apple but sorry they DO require the ram.

My 8+ on the latest beta isn’t laggy at all so the X will be fine.

Thats good news, thank you Simacca. A glimmer of hope, lets see. Fingers crossed.

My 8+ also lags randomly. I found out that disabling True Tone make it smooth again. New feature new bug

My 8 is fast and fluid on everything. It’s not the phone that’s causing the freezing, lag, etc. it’s iOS 11. 11.1 should be out soon and it’ll probably ship with the X so that will probably be a more solid update.

Same here. My 8 is fine with no lagging or stuttering. I am also on iOS 11.1 beta 3.

I've been using iPhones for years, don't know what lag you're on about but i haven't had any issues. Or else i wouldnt use it period.

So you're most likely just trolling. No one in their right mind would stick to a manufacturer if all they experienced was lag. I wouldn't stick to any brand that gave me a **** experience which is exactly why I don't use android. Its a ****** experience to me and iOS is buttery smooth.

For $1000+ it better not be.

Hi nia820,

No kidding, I agree.

Lets see what I have invested so far...

1Pad Pro 10.5 512GB
Apple Pencil
2017 MBP 13"TB, i7, 1TB, 16GB
iPhone 8 256GB
iPhone 7 128GB

Buuuut I'm a troll to some here because I'm complaining about iPhones lagging.

You didn’t even have to justify yourself, if someone don't trust you then he/she can just get out of here and go comment in the threads where everything is fine and Apple is the perfect company. Some people around here thinks that their experience = everyone experience.

I don’t have any major issues (except the usual odd bugs) on my iPhone 7 running iOS 11.0 (yeah I didn’t even bothered to update to 11.0.3, I’m waiting for 11.1) but I trust you because I have been there before with previous iOS versions like iOS 9.0.x for example where my device stuttered like crazy on simple animations whereas some people simply didn’t have those issues. Plus I don’t know why you would even bother to create a thread in the first place if you didn’t had any issues.

Anyway, back to the topic, I heard that 11.1 (which is currently in beta) improve a lot the stability and fluidity like for example fixing the 3D Touch animations that can stutter sometimes.

iOS 11 is laggy on manybdevices. I don't know how people can just brush it off ass nothing.

I've invested quite a lot coins into apple products too. I've got called a troll and Android fan. Some fanboys just cannot accept apple isn't perfect.

I am on 11.0.3 (8 256GB) and it’s really fast, not freezing, skipping, compare your iphone with the iPhones which are on display in apple store.

There is another thread about stuttering animation. The problem is real.
Now this is a shame to announce the greatest SoC ever and have lags or stuttering.

My 8 Plus isn't laggy. However, something about the software does not feel right in terms of butteriness. iOS 11.1 seems to fix this issue, so I would say you'd be fine with the X

The trick will be not to upgrade for a month after you receive it.

this is correct wait for the tech reviewers to start raging then you know there's a problem and you'd be glad you didn't upgrade [since they need views its the only way]. i kinda regret upgrading to 11.0.3 haha but oh well. i can live with the caveats for a bit.

Its most of the time butter smooth, but then suddenly start lags, and all needed do to remove lag is lock and unlock again so its a software bug, sometimes i only get it once in a day, other times more, and have the 8

I do get that stutter when unlocking on the iPhone 8 dunno why... but if i gave it 2-4 seconds of waiting time it seems to be fine after that.
