Tcpip printing from an iPad2 to a networked HP 4050 laser printer

Because Apple would need to include about 4 Gig of printer drivers.

Wait..so am I to understand that I will not be able to print from my ipad2 to a tcpip network printer ( an HP 4050 TN) that I have setup on my home network?

If that is the case I have a brand new Ipad2 32 gig with 3G (Verizon) for sale!!!

Just get Printopia and you will be able to use any printer that is shared on your Mac.

That would be great if I HAD a Mac. I have a PC network and the HP printer is attached to the network and has a static IP address. I just bought a new IPAD2. I have been scouring the net for a way to simply print from the iPad to the networked HP printer. I am finding nothing. And like I said if that is not going to be a possibility I am glad I saved the box and everything for the ipad2 because It is useless without the ability to print to a networked laser jet
:(

A friend of mine who does not have an eprint printer found this way to print from the iPad2:

1) http://jaxov.com/2010/11/how-to-enable-airprint-service-on-windows/
2) Share Printer
3) At this point the iPad recongnizes the printer. but you need the user and password. I had a problem with the laptop. ..SO...
3) I create a user and added the user as part of the share... called it airprint/airprint.

Con - Laptop has to be on
Pro - It works (so far)

I *think* you can share a networked printer on a PC. If this is still too much of a hassle but you do want a tablet, maybe the Xoom would work? I don't know if it has print limitations.

Scouring the net, really? My first search came up with this link--seems to work basically the same as the AirPrint Hacktivator app for Mac.

Try to read what I said my setup was - This is a stand alone TCPIP networked printer. The link you suggested (which I already found) is for printing to a SHARED printer on a mac or PC. I do not have a MAC or PC that just sits there acting as a print server. Apple sucks. you can't go to another business or residence and connect to their wireless network and use a networked printer VIA TCPIP - that to me is unacceptable.

I am putting my ipad2 on Craigs List tomorrow:mad:

There's a way to use a PC to share any printer using AirPrint.

I think this is the link I used:

For the rest of us, please keep in mind that ePrint is not the same as AirPrint. Each one is a different technology with its own advantages and disadvantages. Most if not all HP ePrinters can either become AirPrint compatible through a firmware upgrade, or already support AirPrint.

ePrint requires using HPs iOS app, but it's great to print to a remote printer, not just to a local printer.

My bad, missed the stand-alone part. As PhoneI mentioned, wouldn't that capability require having a huge volume of print drivers included with the firmware? Suck's that you can't get it to work for you but honestly, I think your situation represents a small percentage of users, thus Apple deciding not to include it. Sounds like a Macbook Air might suit you better--$849 for base refurb at Apple Store online right now.

Also, why Craigslist it instead of returning it if you just bought it? The demand for Verizon units is pretty awful compared to the other models--likely you'll take a loss.

There are 3rd party apps that work as AirPrint should, ie in the way you want.

The app ePrint, for example, does a creditable job of occasional printing for me to my networked wireless allinone without a server PC/Mac.

It's a little more of a hassle getting documents to it, but if you can get your document to a WebDAV or anywhere you can Open With..., you'll be fine.

I believe there's a free version to test with, if you can salvage the iPad from Craigslist...

If someone is selling his iPad only because it cannot print to a networked printer via TCP/IP, then he shouldnt be having it in the first place. I do not want to sound offensive but if you did a little research you would have known that. Did you buy the iPad just for printing? Don't you have any other use for it? Maybe you should get a laptop or even a netbook.

To be fair, Apple have dialled back from what AirPrint was initially supposed to have offered. I got the iPad with the expectation that there would be a solution on its way, and promoted it to others on this basis.

And given that 3rd party apps can certainly handle proper wifi printing as you'd expect, I'm confused and dismayed as to why Apple still don't have a fully functional native solution to this.

I agree.
