Honestly I think Steve Jobs is enough to make the iPad succeed. I doubt it'll ever be as popular as the iPhone but there's a market for those readers/safari pads.

Ironically, Internet usage is far greater on the iPhone than any other mobile devices!! I.e. AT&T network having issues. It serves us fine. Internet on pc has issues too! Plus a lot of sites are adapting to the iPhone ecosystem! Ipad is multicentric device and ultra portable and great battery too!
Ultra portable?? Not in my book. If it can't fit in a pocket or on my waistband, it isn't "ultra portable". "Portable"? yes. ultra-portable? No way.
I hope the iphone doesn't come to Verizon because I don't want Verizon's network to be negatively impacted. I don't KNOW that it would be, if there were 10 million iPhones on Verizon, but I don't want to find out!
The best way to put it, this isn't the Apple of the 90's. Apple is not stupid, and will not let this device be a complete failure. If they find that feature a is the reason why the product is not selling, they will add it. If Copy and Paste was the single reason keeping the iPhone from breaking, say, 1 Million devices, it would have been added sooner. The thing about the iPhone was, people were picking them up like hotcakes even with what it was lacking. The same will be for the iPad, people will either pick them up, or they won't. If they don't, Apple will make it so they do. I think the current version of the iPad is very lacking, but I have the confidence that it will be brought up to a must have device, period.
The question is whether people want a 3rd category. The iPhone belonged to a very popular category but I'm not sure if people need a 3rd category so features might not be the only problem.

There are not many people outside of this forum who would give a toss about a CEO when it comes to purchasing a device. I think even Jobs would admit that it's a whole culture, the talent of the company, finances and other similar factors that make a device successful.
Jobs on his own is nothing. Once he's gone, others will do his job somehow. Personally, I hope that Apple pays more attention to ethics and its computer users.
Well said - which is why, at the moment, the iPad has little interest to me. Just like the original iPhone had little interest to me. As presented (notice the careful use of the phrase AS PRESENTED) - the iPad isn't a 3rd device I have a use for. Could I find a use for it - sure. But I'm not going to buy one just to play with or just to have. WHEN it is "brought up" / updated or if the final product release of the first iPad offers more than originally showcased, my decision might change.
And I think that even a lot of the naysayers would agree. I don't want to buy the iPad that might or eventually be. I want to buy the iPad I, personally, would use.
That's not to say the iPad won't sell millions anyway.
I agree-there are 6.8 billion people on the planet. There are 4.6 billion cell phone subscriptions. Amazing stat! That doesn't even speak to the number of cell phones that each subscriber has owned over their years of cell phone usage. I've owned roughly 8+ phones myself. Same for my wife. Staggering number of cell phones have been sold in the last decade.

Which simply underscores news organizations' desperation to get aboard the Apple/iPad train.
Well YOU'D of course interpret it that way being the cultist you're so proud of being.
Another perspective would be that the eco-structure at this point is on shaky ground and need maturity and a clearer understanding before it will have true momentum.
