Looks like the people in China who make the real thing for Apple, are also making the knock offs.

It very much looks that way. This charger could have been hanging in its packaging in an Apple store and no one would have said anything.

Not to thread jack but are you all certain that its okay to use the ipad charger for these phones? I would worry about it over charging, getting warm, or something like that..

It's perfectly fine. Even Apple says so. 12 watt charger compatibility

If you are using an iPhone 5S or older, it will only pull a maximum of 5 watts from the charger, so you won't see any decrease in charging time over a stock 5 watt charger.

If you are using an iPhone 6 or 6+, the phone is capable of drawing more power and thus decreasing your charge time. It can and will get hotter during charging and this is normal.

The device itself dictates how much power it will draw. If you had a charger capable of outputting 50,000 watts- the phone would still only draw 5 watts (in the case of the older phones, etc.)

I made it with the purpose of it also being educational. The outside looks as good as any genuine charger out there.

If it's indeed fake, it just goes to show how damn good these knock offs are getting.

I also noticed that there is no tear down of a 12W USB Charger anywhere on the internet. Only the 5W

Figured I'd be the best to take it apart and compare it

I think you've proven that it's impossible to tell the difference from the outside, and still quite difficult to tell even if you open it up.

Therefore, the best course of action is probably to just pay up for a genuine adapter straight from Apple, unfortunately.

Yup that's true. I've measured the output from an ipad charger to a iphone 5/4, maxes out at 1A.

I use a 10watt charger from my iPad, I also use the charging-only 2.1A USB port on my external USB hub, both charge the phone very quickly.

Although it is possible to charge a 6+ over a regular USB port, it would take hours to complete. Whereas from 10% to 100% takes about 1.5 - 2 hours max on the 2.1A USB port.
