Realistically, I think it's fair to assume that Apple will do something special for the 10th anniversary. However, I have doubts that the iPhone 8 will live up to all of the rumors that keep coming out (remember, this time last year, the iPhone 7 was supposed to be the phone with the OLED screen and new design and we certainly didn't get it).

I'm thinking Apple will definitely make the jump to OLED (as long as the brightness levels are high enough to use in sunlight) which will allow for a slightly slimmer design (partly thanks to the headphone jack removal) and possibly an edge to edge screen. I doubt that Apple will adopt Samsungs design of the screen going over the edges since it doesn't really provide any major benefit other than looking cool. I don't think the home button will completely disappear yet but I do think it will be totally flush with the front glass. It should be a good looking phone.

What I'm looking forward to more than the iPhone 8 is seeing what other stuff Apple has been working on for the 10th anniversary. iOS 11 may be a bigger update than iOS 10. We may also see Apple officially support VR in order to compete with the Samsung Gear VR (I know a few people who have bought GS7s just because they were curious about the VR). It would also give Apple something to go against Googles new Daydream headsets.

Either way, for now, enjoy the iPhone 7. Its crazy that we are already talking about a phone that 1 year away and the new model hasn't even launched yet. It may not be a big upgrade for iPhone 6S owners, but for us iPhone 6 owners, the iPhone 7 seems like it was made especially for us. Based on the good reviews, it seems like the iPhone 7 will be a great phone to hold onto while we wait to see what the next model turns out to be.

Not to mention, there's got to be a special iPhone for Apple's 10th. Anniversary Year with iPhone.
Adding limited edition AirPods in the box could be a 10th anniversary feature. Tim REALLY wants to get those things out to market and slow some of the nevernoheadphonejack hysteria. Btw, the jet-black AirPods look awesome. Especially the case. Much less dental floss looking than the white.

Take the 7/+, shrink the bezels and give it a ceramic body. Borrow the airpods case concept and lose all ports from the phone completely. (Charge case via lightning, put phone in case to charge.) Add pencil support.

And that's all I want.

I'll say this, aside from "new product" launches (original iPhone, original iPad, etc.), Apple increasingly underwhelms me with their hardware updates. Nothing earthshaking certainly. Even iOS has been underwhelming in its incremental updates. I continually hope for great new features and am disappointed when I watch the keynote. Maybe it's just me having such high expectations since the launch of the revolutionary original iPhone. I just feel nearly every time I am excited about an Apple product update cycle, I end up disappointed. Now, if I wait TWO update cycles (as I dis in the case of my new iPhone 7, I get somewhat excited, but yearly updates, rarely). Like I said, it's probably just me...but Apple is world class at hyping updates. I'm cautiously optimistic about next years phone but won't be at all surprised if it ends up less than many expected (and I know people sometimes want unrealistic features, but many of the features people seem to want have been in other phones for years). I love the iPhone and think it is the best, safest phone available, but revolutionary, they have not at all been (perhaps with the exception of what they are doing in the SoC field which is somewhat mind boggling).
It's just like cars now. Manufacturers milk the same look adding a couple new features here and there and then redesign after 3 or 4 years. People need to let go of the fact of the original iPhone being ground breaking you will not get an experience like that for a long long time (if ever) . This is now a slow gradual year by year update where phones make slow and steady improvements.

I tend to jump from Android and apple. was on Android for a 2 year cycle this time coming back to Apple on the 7. I am glad I enjoy both oses as it is always a treat and refreshing when I return to one or another.

I still find keynotes to be increasingly underwhelming.

Part of it may be that we already pretty much know what's coming because of an increasingly accurate rumor mill.
Decent point, but even if I knew about some cool new features, I'd be excited to see them Demo'd at the Key. Just haven't been too excited watching them for some time now. Maybe next year will surprise me.

I'd say there's zero chance of that happening. It doesn't have to be 10 years to the day. Any release in 2017 will be considered the 10th anniversary.

I'm not to sure. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple released the anniversary phone in 9 months time to coincide with the release of the first iPhone. It wouldn't be the first time that Apple changed a product cycle. The fact that the design hasn't changed for the 7 makes me think this is even more possible.

The current + series look huge next to a Galaxy S7 Edge. They need to trim the size dramatically and improve screen resolution. Yeah they have great cameras, but so do Galaxies.

Phones are different though. Even Apple's own upgrade program is based on leasing the phone for a year, isn't it?

Give out free earpods? lol yeah right, I'm still in shock we are getting the lightening to 3mm adaptor for free

I'm really not sure they are different, maybe they are. Interesting point on apples own upgrade program.

I find it strange that so many people are taking an internet rumour on face value and assuming next year will be the big update.

How often are internet rumours a year in advance true? They don't start getting any kind of truth until a few months before release. Remember the iPhone pro that surfaced with its 3 pin connector on the back? that ended up being wrong and that was doing the rounds until about a month ago.

What if there is an iPhone 7s next year with incremental upgrades? What if the iPhone 8 isn't what the rumours say?

Of course it's everyone's choice but I think a bit more scepticism is needed and not believing every rumour so far in advance.

^^^ This!

Well said. I couldn't agree more.

I seriously doubt Apple is planning a special "10th Anniversary" iPhone. Apple is not sentimental. They are about making money and lots of it. That's the bottom line. They will release whatever phone they please as long as it maximizes profits. Obviously from this launch, Apple could very well release an iPhone 7S and sell just as many as they would with a "10th Anniversary" iPhone. The key is what will be cheaper to manufacture? My money is on an iPhone 7S. And besides, as others have pointed out, rumors this early in the year are dubious at best and maybe even leaked by competitors to disrupt sales of the iPhone 7.

I can't see Apple keeping the same design for 4 years in a row. It will surely effect their sales. It will be interesting to see how well the 7 does in terms of sales compared to the 6/6s.
