I saw Space Black for the first time at BestBuy last night. My immediate reaction was "meh", sort of underwhelming. Granted, it was under bright store lighting, and I still think Space Black looks way better than Space Gray. Other posters are correct that Space Black more resembles Gunmetal, or I'd call it Space Charcoal. AppleInsider does a good job showing the difference in color at varying angles:

As a Space Grey user...:

Silver > Space Grey >> Space Black >>>>>>> Midnight.

  • Silver is the "original" color, and it is pretty timeless. Additionally, it is also the color that will show far less wear and tear overtime (scratches, discoloration, "palm-sweat", fingerprints), etc.
  • Space Grey looks really nice! But, scratches, discoloration, and fingerprints may make it not look as clean as the Silver.
  • Space Black is essentially a darker Space Grey, but the scratches, discoloration, and fingerprints are for sure more visible in this darker color...even with the new coating process.
  • Midnight just looks horrendous. No special coating like the Space Black. Easily the most prone to wear and tear, and is an insane fingerprint magnet. It's just gnarly looking.
Basically, if aesthetics matter to you (especially fingerprints), don't buy a dark colored laptop.

Space Charcoal is exactly what I want. Matches my car and some of my other gear. To me, it's perfect!

To me in that photo you have silver, blue, gray, and black.

How do you like the color? Wish you got Silver instead?
Love mine. I bought both 14 for off site work and 16 for home use. Sold my M1 air and 16 inch M1Max. The new color is great. The only thing that really collects fingerprints is the keyboard.

I'm loving it, a minor increase in fingerprints compared to my old M1 Pro Silver model, but it looks awesome. I really like how the black coating around the keyboard/trackpad absorbs light and reduces reflections compared to the silver finish. Somehow it feels like the screen "pops" a bit more, and there's less distraction when trying to focus on something. Sounds weird but I much prefer using it thanks to this lower reflectivity.

I think you are spot on. The color is never the same, it changes in hue and saturation depending on the ambient light. it looks almost completely black in a dimly lit room and grey in a well-lit room. And the apple logo looks perfect against that color background.

It's a very obvious difference. I have pretty sensitive light blue eyes, the kind where I have to wear sunglasses on a sunny day or I get headaches, and immediately notice the extra eye strain w/ silver in anything but a dim room.

It's a tradeoff between function and aesthetics. I love how the silver looks esp. with the black keyboard tray, but I need to do work on this device in a variety of settings where I may not be able to dim or turn off the light.

I feel like this is the color "Space Gray" should have been, as the space gray is very close to silver. That being said I do like it though and I kind of like the fact that its not fully black so it doesn't look like a windows laptop.

So I wanted to try out the 16" vs the 14" and this is the first thing I see. Chips on the top left of the track pad.

I am an OCD person so this would annoy me thoroughly.

I like space black but returned for the silver. I’m wayy to OCD for the smudges on black
Same for me. I really like the space black, and it looks awesome. But in reality, I have to figure out ways of dealing with dust and oily fingers, and I'm tired of it and I've also seen people already scuffed theirs, so this time I'll go silver.

Yikes but if it scuffs should be gray/black underneath?

do you prefer the 14 or 16? I assume you now like silver :)

I'll go for silver as it is requires less maintenance, less paranoia about dust etc, matches my Studio Display and shiny things are just classier things ;)
I've always thought the silver was the most attractive looking and never once been even slightly swayed by any other color.

I ordered the 16 in SB, cancelled it and got Silver instead. I had a SG MBP M1 and I normally lean towards the darker color options. This is my first Silver and I have to say, it is quite a lovely and low show/maintenance color. Not sure I regret it yet. I have a little over a week to figure out if i do regret not going with SB.

Its tough, obviously the portability of the 14" is excellent, like insane but the screen real estate and the slightly better speakers is amazing on the 16". I am still torn. Right now I am siding with the 16" but that may change in a few hours. By the way, absolutely in love with the Space Black. It looks amazing, I will exchange this 16" for another Space Black hopefully with no other scuffs/chips.

Only 2 days in and I love the sleek color. The apple logo is barely visible from afar if my screen isn't tilted to the correct angle. I do see smudges, but those don't really bother me.

Dings and scratches are what I'm afraid of. My 8 year old Space Gray MBP has all kinds of small dings on its corners, but SG is light enough that they kinda make it look rugged. Dings on the Space Black could end up looking really bad.

We'll see.
