I suggest you read the Apple advisory I linked. Anything protective inside the machine is not advisable when it's in a closed state.
I am aware of what Apple says. I am using it for three years without any damage to display which also got protective film on it.

I have now had an M3 MacBook Pro since release day, about 18 months ago, and an M4 MacBook Pro since release day, about 5 months ago. I don't baby them, I wipe them down with a damp microfiber cloth - the M4 once a day end of the day (I use that one a lot), the M3 about once/week (I use it less now.) Both are still perfect - no fingerprints, loss of color, scratches, chips, nothing. Seems to be as durable as when I got silver if you ask me.
Sounds hopeful but do you use the ports a lot USB-C and there is no wear, or do you take the M4 out of the house at all?

I can tell you that any MacBook in general has to be extremely babied as they are very fragile devices. Even if you have to type on the poor quality keyboards, you have to press the keys so lightly that you're barely hitting them or the keys can get damaged.
Based on the number of people that post here, and personal experience, I feel your assertion is without merit. If the machines are that fragile, this place would be full of complaints, warranty claims would be rampant, and Apple would not have people jammed in the stores buying the machines.

I had a MacBook Air, M2, that traveled with me many times, including two trips to Europe. The machine was never babied, nor was the machine abused. The machine was in excellent condition after two years of use.

I use 2 of the ports plus MagSafe all the time. No issues there. I will say, since I know people have really banged the areas around the ports up, I do insert the cable 'intentionally' - I don't take any extra time, I just focus on lightly placing it in the port then pushing. I don't do it distracted or carelessly, that's all. I take the M4 out of the house on trips in a nice bag with a section for laptops with a soft lining of some sort.. I have a sleeve but don't use it actually.

I am careful with all my equipment not to do things that could easily risk a drop - again, just being intentional when I carry around a multi-thousand dollar piece of equipment. But I never felt I was doing anything odd. And it's the same behavior I always used with the silver Macs in the old days.

Sounds like the way I treat my machines. I am going to get mine tomorrow, I think so probably will now go with Space Black but hope I do not regret it. It is only a tool, right?;)

I’m wayy to OCD for the smudges on black
I have a midnight coloured Macbook Air 15" and it's the same, it looks great but shows smudges and finger prints badly. I keep a cleaning cloth with it all the time.

Good luck! And I don't get all the fingerprint comments - I have never had a fingerprint that stayed with a dressing of a damp microfiber cloth! Clean it end of the day if you are OCD like me lol, and wash your hands after eating the pepperoni pizza...

I was planning on getting a soft lined sleeve
I am partial to TomToc cases and sleeves. They seem really well made. Soft inside with reinforced corners. Fit well. I used such a case for my Surface Laptop for several years. When I got my M2 Air 13” I got another laptop bag from TomTac. That served me well for a couple of years. When I upgraded to the MBP 14” I got another TomToc bag that made a 10 day trip to Texas and will be making a three week trip to Europe later this year.

TomToc, makes good quality stuff....

How do you like the color? Wish you got Silver instead?
I have a silver work 14", and a space black personal 16". Tbh I don't really think about the difference - they both need to be wiped down about the same.

I prefer the space black a bit, looks a bit nicer in most lighting, but it's nothing to worry about either way.
