We have a fair selection of Apple kit and a 4 yr old son - nuff said.

We have an iPad 1 with no cover (it was just a dirt magnet) and our son was walking through a marble floored hotel lobby with it last month, I said to my wife take that off him he might drop it, she said "he has not dropped it since we have had it!" 30 seconds later he drops it and we have a heavily smashed in corner.

My wife also has a iPad 2 that she does not let the boy play with, just keeps it in her work bag, 2 weeks ago on the kitchen table the boy accidentally catches the bags strap the bag falls and ipad 2 smashed in on the corner!

Earlier this year, new Macbook Pro only 5 mins out of its box and battery charging in the corner, little boy has a strop and throws his action man across the room and it hits the macbook, luckily the screen was closed, but it hit the lid and there is a (small) dent.

The morale of the story - don't have kids! or if you do think seriously about cages.

I think that would hold much more true to a phone than a tablet.

I've never dropped my iPad 1 or iPad 2.

Agree wholeheartedly! My phone has been dropped so many times I don't even wince as I drop it any more (which is why I still can't understand why Apple would make the iPhone4's case out of glass). My iPad2, on the other hand, is utterly babied.

My only concern with the smart cover is keeping it clean.

Having owned an iPhone 2G, iPhone 3GS, iPad 1 as well as my current iPhone 4 / iPad 2 64Gb, I've learned that 'stuff happens'.. While i hadn't experienced any drops up until last month (taking a vdeo image out of a 4th floor Istanbul hotel room window when my IP4 fell.. the only damage was a ruined Incipio Feather and scratched Gelaskin), unless you happen to treat your devices with kid gloves, they can quite easily get scratched.

For that reason, I've never had any iDevices sans case/screen protector and i'm quite happy putting my iPad into a backpack wit other items and iphone into any pocket regardless what's in them.

That said, I currently have the Smart Feather and Smart Cover on the Ipad2 but I'm finding it pretty useless for watching movies on flights (my old iPad 1 was in a Yoobao case that could be propped up at multiple angles but the smart cover's option of almost vertical or almost horizontal doesn't cut it) so I'll be looking for a slim and versatile folio case soon.

I use a smart cover (since launch day). I have a sleeve also, but it doesn't spend much time in the sleeve except when it's in my bag (generally).

I don't have dents (yet). I babied my iPad, but am doing much less so with my iPad 2 -- no screen protector, sometimes in my bag with books, files, briefs. Not sure why. But, in any event, just primarily using the smart cover hasn't led to anything dropping.

I use just the smartcover (Powder blue) but I've just ordered the Zagg LeatherSkin (in Powder Blue as well) for the back...:)

I have used the Zagg and let me tell you it provides no protection whatsoever. It is just a thick sticker. Returned after two days use.

If you want something that works with the smartcover that is thin and actually protects the ipad in conjuction with the smartcover look no further than the Coverbuddy.

I would not suggest the clear as it is a harder plastic. The Black is a rubbery coated poly that is more comfortable to hold. Actually provides protection while being thin. I have tried both the clear and the black the black is better in my opinion.

I also have a leather sleeve for travel. All three work great. The sleeve for travel, the smartcover in conjunction with the coverbuddy for travel.

I could see the problem with the smart cover from day 1 - not nearly as protective as the original Apple cover for the iPad 1. Not only that but I wanted a black one like my old iPad so I ordered a SmartSuit 2 from Realliance, it covers that back and front works like the smart cover and comes in black. I'll report back when it arrives to let you know if it's any good.

I only use a Smart Cover and I've had my iPad for about 3 months now.

I still treat it like I did the first day I got it... hold it like a baby, and FLAME anyone who holds it with one hand...

I have had mine for almost a month and I do the same.

To me the smart cover is none sense and merely protects the iPad against scratches. might as well just put a screen protector on it as the smart cover provides no protection against a straight fall to the ground. It is like wearing s vest during a cold winter night - a no-mans land between protection and no protection.

I rather take the risk my iPad being damaged then put it inside a bulky, heavy and ugly case. Then again i have owned 4 iPhones and 2 iPads and never dropped any of them. For me a Smart cover and a thin back clear cover is enough. I do use a leather sleeve for travel but it adds very little bulk or weight. For my iPhone I use a simple sleeve/pouch case to carry it in. Besides there is no guarantee a folio or any othrr type of case is going to provide 100% protection.

Yes but then that's no different then having an Apple Smart cover and a separate back like the Belkin Snap Shield which is what I have. The difference is that I can actually take the Smart cover off leaving the back cover on which I like the option to do. Having said that I'm referring to the various folio and mole skin cases discussed on these forums which do add bulk and weight and in most cases IMO look tacky.

Did you get the Blue Zagg? Is it exactly the same color blue as the Smart Cover? May I trouble you to post a picture showing the two items side by side.

Thanks very much :)

I fear this, but I refuse to take away from the beauty and install a case. Leather smartcover till the end.

It arrived today and it's great, easier to keep clean than original iPad cover and it clips onto the back adding hardly any bulk. Nice design. Mock leather but I am perfectly happy with that as long as it does what it's supposed to, protect my iPad.

Trust me. I treat my gadgets like new born babies and have never destroyed a gadget if mine from a drop on the ground, and I mostly enjoy them bare with no cover. Then iPad is an exception though. It's clumsy, slippery, expensive and will be used on the go and is thus vulnerable to either getting knocked to the ground.

A folio does the most important which is prevent cosmetic damage around the entire device. A smart cover simply protects the screen from scratches. If an iPad with a smart cover falls and lands on a corner or even flat on the back there, the device will be absorbing the full shock and this also includes the screen despite the being protected by a smart cover. A folio's job is to make sure that regardless how the iPad falls that the case will absorb most of the energy.

However a smart cover with paired with a rubber back cover is enough most cautious users.

Here is my iPad2 with the blue smartcover and blue Zagg LeatherSkin...Quick shots from my iPhone with poor lighting...I'll take some better shots this weekend...the Smartcover appears to be just a bit darker in these poor photos, but in real life they are identical...

That looks pretty good except for the apple Logo ( for my liking )

Has anyone of you use wrapsol protective screen for the back and use a smart cover on it ? for my understanding this eliminate the chance of getting the back scratched damage due to the movement on the smart cover.

P.s. I initially doesnt want to use the smart cover because of its price and outdated design. But for some reason i want to get and use 1 now. Its crazy how it plays in ppl's mind.
