Tried to confirm but could not find any number at AMD (ATI ) that would give me access to a customer service rep other than for drivers etc. I did call Apple and did get a confirm that they are still on hold and she did indicate it was probably the card, but could not confirm for sure....

So hopefully, those of us who ordered it in the beginning of march, won't have to wait longer than expected... hopefully.

That is interesting. That is not what they told me on the phone. They told me that the card is made for Apple and is on back order. Now you have to think about this for a minute. Apple uses 3rd parties for certain parts, and video cards to my knowledge are not made by Apple, They are made by Nvidia or ATI/AMD or others. I think you got bad information. But Maybe my person I talked to didn't know what they were talking about either. So we just have to wait. I am guessing that we should start seeing iMacs being delivered sometime in the middle to late April.

I know what you mean. It seems no one has a clue. I agree that Apple is not in the graphic card business. If you look on the Apple site, they give the description of the graphic capabilities of the iMac. They talk about an integrated graphic processor and not a graphic card.

I called Apple and they told me it not a card but is attached to the logic board just like the laptops. So, this would lead me to believe Apple is not waiting on ATI to manufacture the 4850 "card". I am assuming, and I am no expert, that we are talking about the 4850 graphics processor which Apple, or whoever builds the iMac, integrates with the logic board. I guess the question is.... Is apple waiting for a supply of 4850 graphic processors that will be integrated with the logic board or is it the told 10.5.7 driver speculation.... As you say, who knows....

This is from the Apple site and describes the graphic component of the iMac. Maye some one who is more technically adept than I am can comment on this, but I am pretty convinced we are not waiting for a graphics card...

AFAIK, the iMac is like a laptop in monitor. There's no graphic "card" inside. What ATI and Nvidia are selling is GPU chips, and they don't even manufacture it themselves, most likely TSMC does it for them. Once those computer makers get the GPU chip, GPU chips will be soldered on the motherboard/logicboard with VRAMs. Therefore, they have everything needed to be a graphic card in a sense, they are just not in a card form as we usually see in desktops. This will allow laptops or AIO computers to be built smaller and more compact.

Also, usually when we say integrated graphic processor, it means the graphic processor unit is integrated into the chipsets. Nvidia 9400m is an example. Or those crappy Intel integrated graphic "card," (again, not a physical card, just the way we call it.) However, the Nvidia GT120/GT130 and ATI 4850 are discrete graphic cards.

I think you are right. There is no graphics card. I never meant that there was such a card. However I do believe there is a delay for some reason and my guess and it is your guess as well that Apple is probably waiting for the 4850 processors that will be soldered into the MB. I just wish it was not so long of a wait.

Bank contacted me

I ordered 3rd March (in the UK). My bank called me today (3rd April) to say the fraud department wanted to check I had really ordered something from Apple. They tend to do that when I buy expensive things (I am not so sure why exactly but that is a different story...).

So in other words, Apple has now taken teh money for my iMac. Estimated shipping is still 14th April and delivery is still 23rd April (they seem to ship from the other end of the world by boat or something).

Has anyone else had their money taken? Is this a sign that things are moving forward or does Apple merely want to work with my cash?

I, too, ordered on March 3, but in California, so I guess a few hours after you did. I checked my card, and it has not been charged. My order status continues to say shipping April 14.
