I give up..........

How some of you think that this situation is acceptable is beyond me.

Take Apple out of the equation for a second, if you can, and imagine that it is a normal company that can sometimes be wrong and who are not entitled to get away with it when they make mistakes and should be held accountable when they slip up. Would you be so blindly defensive of this obviously shoddy customer care?

But don't answer that, I already know the answer.............

IT's not an Apple thing.

IT's the person between the chair and screen. The person who ordered a product that had a rough shipping date up front and is now complaining that Apple doesn't know exactly when it will ship.

It has nothing to do with the company name.

If you were ordering an out of stock product from Amazon that had a 3-5 week shipping estimate and complained about it not having shipped yet in 5 weeks I would say the same thing.

That's why I never order out of stock products with far off rough shipping estimates unless I'm willing wait aka whenever it gets here it gets here.

That's why some folks here just ordered a different iMac because they didn't want to wait. They knew it might even take longer.

For future reference in the real world: A 3-5 week shipping estimate is a red flag that says, "we don't know precisely when the product is going to ship." Calling them and writing them 5 weeks later isn't going to change that answer.

oh dear.
Can you make a comment on the 7-10 days being quoted in the apple store for the ati 4850 if you ordered it now? That's a delivery of the 21st April at worst if you ordered today. I ordered on the 7th of March and am being told that I will get mine on the 5th of May. CAN YOU SEE MY POINT NOW??????

Thanks krogren but still dont see the option. Got View Public Profile, View other posts by <user> and Add <user> to buddy list.

For the record, it's because my post count was less than 5 I couldn't send private messages. Ironically, my 5th post was the one I was saying I couldn't send private messages... lol

Once again, apologies for any offense caused earlier...

I'll shut up about it now so we can get back on topic

US now 7-10 business days

Just noticed that the US apple store is now reflecting 7-10 business days like the UK store for the 4850.

I'd say it's at least good news since that puts us within the original 4-6 weeks estimated from day 1.

Dan, US consumer law strongly favours companies not the purchaser.

We tend to have different standards and expectations over here, thats why there is the lack of sympathy on these boards. Most of the respondents are used to getting shafted (metaphorically of course) and not just by Apple.

On topic, I agree with you 100%. The lack of info. and clarity is downright appalling, not to mention the time discrepancies.

If it were me I'd cancel and wait for Windows 7 and buy a PC from Dell, vote with your wallet. Imagine the kind of PC you could buy for that money!!! i7 and change!!!

..and their shipping info. tends to be accurate!! ;)

Noticed that. I am still scheduled for the 14th but will not get excited until the shipping notice arrives from :apple:...

interesting. Thought about canceling mine and re-ordering for a quicker ship, but then I realized that my ship date is april 20, which is exactly 10 business days from today. Which would certainly be a reason why I wouldn't receive any emails like other people who ordered early.

Just good to know that progress is being made and I'm a bit closer to having my new mac!

I would not cancel at this point. It does appear they have a firmer date for a resolution of whatever was the holdup. I think they will probably ship most of the units at the same time. It would make no sense to ship a newly ordered one in 7 to 10 days while there are quite a few people out there with May shipping.

Thanks for your considered and unbiased response.

I have considered canceling and getting a PC but I actually want an iMac.

no worries..

each to their own.

I couldn't imagine running anything but OSX but I also couldn't imagine paying Apple's new hardware prices either.

All my hardware tends to be Apple refurb. store or KRCS ex display.

good luck....!

btw do you really need the 4850? if not some refurb older iMacs can be excellent value!

It's got to last me a long time (the missus won't let me get another computer for a long time!) and as you can't upgrade the graphics processor, I thought I would get the best available, which I think I did (I hope!).

Wow! Thats weird... No harm done I think. :)

So, the ATI Card is the Mobility version of the card? What do you think that will do to the specs? Will it blow the GT 130 out of the water, or just slightly beat it performance wise? And of course... I know this would just be a guess at it, since no one has one yet. I just want a 'guess-estimate.'

I just got off the phone with "Monica" with Apple here in the U.S. After seeing the previous post about new orders shipping in 7-10 days, I went online and checked my order. It still showed a ship date of 4/27 and a delivery of 5/1. I visited the store and spec'd out a duplicate of my order and it came up as 7-10 business days just like another had stated.

As I said, I called 'Monica" and spoke with her...very friendly BTW. She verified that new orders are indeed posting at 7-10 days shipping and verified my order is still showing a 4/27 ship date. She could only offer that it was not sooner because of the high demand for these machines with the 4850.

For my trouble however, she upgraded me to free next business day shipping instead of 5 days. She also stated that there is a possiblility (but no promise) that it could ship sooner.

Cool, PC parts move so quickly that nothing is future proof. You could probably pick up a refurbed iMac with the ATI 2600 Pro card, which would be good for 99% of what you need for a grand or so...

edit: its £949 with a 24 inch screen!!

As we all know by now we aren't sure if the imac will have the mobile or desktop version of the much anticipated card and i came across this.
Read some info here and felt it worthy of sharing as it shows a wealth of info on the gt 130 *listed as class 2)and the ati radeon
*listed as class 1) benchmark lists and gaming performance list.

They are nice but have no clue what is going on. What she said makes no sense... I have heard so many different stories myself and on these boards that I just do not believe they know. I think they are upgrading everyone who calls to next day shipping. You would obviously be in the queue before anyone who ordered today. Time will tell, but I would sure call if I was not scheduled for shipping on the 14th...

C'mon folks, relax a little bit. For those of you who ordered a month ago and do not have an updated shipping date, I'm sure Apple will be moving your date up soon. Many of you are getting fired up as if Apple is going to leave you behind. I assure you this will not happen. Apple has top-notch customer service and I'm sure you will be receiving your iMac soon.

What do the shipping estimates others get have to do with you?

Do you really think those folks ordering a 4850 iMac today are going to get theirs before you do?

Anyway it seemed pretty clear to me on the 7th of March that you were taking a chance on ordering the iMac 4850 as far as the actual shipping date was concerned.

I checked with what others are saying and Yes the date for new orders for the iMacs with the 4850 option are indeed showing up 7-10 business days. Mine was ordered on March 30th with Shipping set at May 5th, and Delivery at May 6th. No change in my date. However that does not mean that I will not get it earlier like on the 20th shipped out. Apple may use automated computer web templates that does our orders. And it could be a glitch that they overlooked on the existing orders.

What you have to do is check your order status daily and look for Prepared for shipment and also keep a eye on your credit card to see when it is pre-authorized again. Mine was pre-authorized but that authorization fell off since it has been over 7 days since the authorization took place. Apple will no doubt authorize it once more just before prepare for shipment. That will be a clue that your shipment is near ready to ship.

To sum up, I believe that those who ordered earlier will have our status updated either as soon as they get to it or when it is about to ship. So don't worry too much about it. Take it easy, calm down and just think about how nice it will be when your iMac finally arrives with the HD 4850 option. :)

No the lack of sympathy is because this product was obviously a product that hadn't been released yet at the time of announcement. It seemed pretty clear to me that one should not order this product hoping to get it by a precise date. Hence the rough 3-5 week shipping guesstimate from Apple at the time of the announcement.

Nothing to do with "used to getting shafted." Everything to do with the reality of a new product that has yet to be released and has a far off rough shipping estimate at the time of order.

There is a lot of confusion on this and I was just as confused until some gracious person explained what the graphics configuration of the iMac is. There is no graphic card in the iMac. They are basically the GPU soldiered onto the board. For those who want to read the full posts, they are 111 and 112

@ gasport
AFAIK, the iMac is like a laptop in monitor. There's no graphic "card" inside. What ATI and Nvidia are selling is GPU chips, and they don't even manufacture it themselves, most likely TSMC does it for them. Once those computer makers get the GPU chip, GPU chips will be soldered on the motherboard/logicboard with VRAMs. Therefore, they have everything needed to be a graphic card in a sense, they are just not in a card form as we usually see in desktops. This will allow laptops or AIO computers to be built smaller and more compact.

Also, usually when we say integrated graphic processor, it means the graphic processor unit is integrated into the chipsets. Nvidia 9400m is an example. Or those crappy Intel integrated graphic "card," (again, not a physical card, just the way we call it.) However, the Nvidia GT120/GT130 and ATI 4850 are discrete graphic cards.

Thanks for the link Irish, made me feel better about waiting on the ATI 4850...even if it is the m version.

Seems like I'll have my new iMac in abo 2 weeks, putting it within the original 4-6 week wait from when I ordered it.

Ok, folks maybe to settle some things here, I called Apple and discussed the fact that my order shows 3 to 5 weeks compared to 7-10 business days if ordered today. She got her Supervisor on this and here is the result.

They said that there is no way that someone who placed a order today will get their iMac before someone who has already has a existing order pending. This simply would not be fair. They said keep a eye on your order status and within 7 days, maybe 10 days from today I should see some change in my status. It could ship as early as 14th but no guarantees. So since i was given a original date of shipping May 5th , if I get it shipped anytime in April I would be happy. Hope this helps everyone.
