Will that be like the Samsung S8, where to bottom portion of the screen is reserved for the virtual Home button, so the actually usable screen area for the icons and apps is only 4.0 to 4.2 inch?

Your math is wrong...the S8 display isn't anywhere near 4.x" inches.

well bare in mind the 6.2 S8 plus is the same size as the 5.5 7 plus.
I know that. I just did some calculation:

Current iPhone 7 (with 4.7" screen) has body dimension of 5.44" x 2.64" = surface area of 14.36". It's screen-to-body ratio is 65.71%.

Samsung Galaxy S8 (with 5.8" screen) is 5.86" x 2.68" = 15.70" surface area. It's screen-to-body ratio is 84.26%.

Fitting a 5.8" screen into current iPhone 7 body dimension will need screen-to-body ratio of 92.12%. Can Apple achieve that? If they can, are they willing to produce it?

I think you misunderstood me. I was quoting PortableLover's desire to shrink the body of iPhone smaller while keeping the screen at the current 4.7" size. So that means Apple will have to get rid of the physical Home button and utilise a virtual Home button, similar to S8, at the bottom portion of the screen. So if the virtual Home button is going to take up a bottom portion of the 4.7" screen, that will only leaves like 4.0 to 4.2" usable screen right?

It would be about 4.2"...but I don't think that will come until 2018 (at the earliest) and that's if Apple doesn't cram a larger screen in there instead.

I dislike the penchant that the phone manufacturers seem to have for maximizing the screen (and keeping the size constant) instead of just shrinking the entire phone.

Pretty soon the small phone market will consist of second-tier phones...Ugghhh!

I'm glad there are at least a couple other people who feel similar to me. Though I'm probably at the extreme end; I just want a zippy little 3.5" phone again. Sigh.

Id prefer if apple just removed the bezels from the 7 and kept the 4.7 inch display. Why not reduce the overall size wjile still keeping 4.7?
Agreed. Holding them next to each other, that would be about as tall as the SE, and only a little wider. Ideal pocketable size.
