I have wireless CarPlay on my BMW. I find it frustrating to use because of the restrictions Apple puts. The regular bluetooth integration is much better. For example, when browsing a playlist, as soon as you select a song from the list, on Carplay the list disappears and the current song takes up the whole screen. On bluetooth, it stays on the list so you can see the next song or skip back as much as you want. Stuff like that.
There are a couple things Apple needs to background in CarPlay, especially if I'm using Siri to call them. Like if I ask it to read me a text message, make a phone call, or play a song it shouldn't immediately take over the whole screen while I'm in the middle of navigating. I have to hit the map button to go back every time, kind of annoying.

Another irritating thing is that if my phone is on silent mode (like it always is), notifications I get on CarPlay are also silenced - and since text messages only stay up for like 2 seconds I never see the notification for it. CarPlay should have its own silent mode toggle separate from the phone.

Overall CarPlay is great though.

There's no money in it for them to retro these changes to older cars, even one year older. So, I would say the possiblity is zero.Smae thing with older TVs and adding Airplay 2. They can...but they won't.
Some manufacturers, such as mazda, have done this. You can either do it yourself if you're so inclined or take it to the dealership.

The thing that annoys me with Sync 3 are the three AM radio groups each with a possible 6 presets... Where in the world is there a demand for 18 AM presets for a radio? Does any market even have 18 AM stations?

My aunt drives cross country for a living. She like country music and talk radio. I bet she would use them all.

Ford sells more F150 trucks than any other manufacturer's vehicles.

Sadly, this is true. And second place is not even close.

Despite having to connect the cable in my car, I sort of like being able to top off my iPhone battery while driving and streaming. Wireless CarPlay I suppose would give me a choice...

My Hyundai already has WIFI support, and of course, BT, so I wonder if they'll ever fix it so CarPlay is wireless. Nah....

I like the idea of wireless CarPlay.

The argument about needing to charge your phone doesn't make any sense to me. You can still charge your phone if you want/need to with wireless CarPlay.

My biggest concern with wireless CarPlay is that wired CarPlay is already very buggy in my experience. Most of these bugs can be corrected simply by unplugging and plugging the phone back in.

I am curious how to handle glitches and bugs with if it is wireless.

at least for Ford owners it’s rather easy to swap out your stock Ford radio or older sync system for whatever is current. (2015+ models) Ford designed the system to be quite modular so if you don’t have sync three you can swap out for it. I am sure you will be able to upgrade your sync three to sync four as well. Heck you can even swap out the analog dash for the digital one. Ford engineers actually thought forward for a change.

When I purchased my car just over 2 years ago, CarPlay was a must have. I like it a lot, but don't use it as often as I would if it were wireless. Wireless CarPlay is now a must have feature.

Is Ford still relevant anymore?
Ford is one of the biggest brands on American roads, and have been #1 in truck sales for the past few decades.

I would say they are still very relevant.

Personally, other than trucks I wouldn't buy an USD brand. If I did, it would most likely be a ford. The other ones are a mess.

Another thought, Ford has been one of the best brands when it comes to implementing CarPlay support, especially when it comes to retrofitting older models.

Would be nice to see this in a future Focus ST or RS. Too bad Ford will only sell those in places other than North America. I’ll just keep using my wired CarPlay with my ST.

Not in terms of sedans they’re not.😁

I’ve had two cars with Sync (GT And SHO), I didn’t care for it. Laggy interface, Sync 3 had some decent U.I. Improvements, but I do like the addition Ford is adding with wireless CarPlay.

“Select Ford Vehicles”... Any idea which ones?
The F-150 at some point. There's already spy shots of a redesign with a large touch screen. Being their top seller I would expect next model year. That will end up in the super duties at some point as they're long overdue for an interior redesign which I'm waiting for. The 2020 explorer would have it I would think as it's interior just got redesigned and it has a 10" screen.

Just look at the pickup truck sales. In North America, they're very much relevant.

As for Wireles Car Play, why has it taken so long? Hasn't the feature been a part of iOS 9 and higher?

Automobile infotainment systems aren't exactly on the cutting edge of supporting new technologies in a timely matter.

Too bad they killed their sedan and hatchback lineup in the US. Not a single vehicle Ford sells now I would buy asides from the Mustang, but that’s not practical enough for me.

To paraphrase Steve Jobs... “Who wants a CUV or SUV? Yuck!”

Hope some of the Japanese and German automakers (asides from BMW) get around to wireless CarPlay, as it looks like one of those two countries will continue to source my personal vehicles.

Hyundai and Genesis (part of Hyundai) have some very good product now.

Will be interesting in how well this is used. For short trips wireless is fine, but for longer ones peoples phones will start dying halfway through the trip. Thats why they didn't push for wireless to begin with.

I have CarPlay disabled in my MY2019 car. For whatever reason (don’t know if it’s an Apple problem or car problem) it is too glitchy to be useful.
It has to the car while CarPlay is sometimes a bit buggy it works well. I've tried this in several car brands

Nothing is preventing people from plugging in to charge. Its a non-issue.

It doesn't use as much battery as you think. But also, just plug it in. You can still do that.

I have used CarPlay since 2015. I have used it on two aftermarket head units and one factory.

While CarPlay is not nearly as bad as it was a few years ago, it is still pretty buggy for me.

I would suspect that it has more to do with iOS and the iPhone that is being used than the head unit.

An argument could be made that sedans are not relevant anymore in the USDM.
