Don't hold out much hope for the wireless CarPlay to be any better. I have it in my BMW and I can tell you there are times where CarPlay fails to launch and you have to turn the car off, open the door, restart the phone... It's not frequent but it has happened at the worst times. Don't even bother talking to Apple about it, they will run you down a 2 hour long trouble shooting hole. It's buggy software on Apple's part.
Sounds like a BMW issue, I have an Alpine iLX-107 and it works perfectly every time.

I bought the Alpine ILX-107 a few years ago and I love it. It works very well and I put it in a 2010 Nissan Frontier. Even though it's wireless, I will plug the iphone in the lighter for power as carplay does pull a good bit on the iphones battery. But in town driving I never have to take it out of my pocket.
Which phone? I feel like the more modern phones have less battery drain on CarPlay - with my X it drains about as fast as just leaving it in my pocket not connected.

I have just installed a wireless carplay kenwood unit in my Mazda. Love the capacitive screen, love what ios13 has done to CarPlay. Wireless carplay is tremendous.

As to battery life, and bear in mind I have an iphone 7 with a cactus battery, I use about 15% per half hour, and the phone can get warm. My wife’s XS max on the other hand just sips the battery. Obviously on long trips you would take it out of your pocket and connect to power.
My only criticism, and it is a kenwood software issue, is the head unit does not provide a way to automatically swap between iPhones, even though you can preset up to five. y
You have to go into the settings/AV in/wireless carplay to choose the iphone you want to use. Kenwood really need a home screen option to select which iPhone for carplay. Also if some one else has used the car when you get it it doesn’t automatically connect to your iPhone. First world problem though solved with about five taps.

Overall though, I rate wireless carplay and the Kenwood frigging awesome.
Agreed about switching phones, I feel like if my gf is driving without me it should just automatically connect to hers but she has to manually swap. On the Alpine also you have to be at a complete stop with the parking brake engaged to swap devices, which is insane. I had to get a brake bypass because that was too ridiculous.

You are very lucky. I’ve had 3 cars and a coworker just got a new car with CarPlay. All have experienced the issues the person you quoted stated. It’s not often, but when it happens there is no default fix it resolution. Sometimes an unplug works, but sometimes you have to turn the car off.

The only issue I’ve ever had was during some of the 13 betas the receiver would stop responding to volume controls so you couldn’t turn it up or down, receiver (car) had to be turned off and on to fix. I think it was related to turn by turn volume and I haven’t had the issue since 13 was finalized. I guess I highly recommend Alpine, apparently they worked directly with Apple on their implementation.

Will be interesting in how well this is used. For short trips wireless is fine, but for longer ones peoples phones will start dying halfway through the trip. Thats why they didn't push for wireless to begin with.
Our wireless CarPlay vehicles also come with an wireless charging as well as USB ports.

I have a 2020 Porsche Macan and an iPhone 11 Pro. It works wirelessly. Sometimes. Plug into the USB cable and that works. Sometimes.

I use wired CarPlay in my Vauxhall Insignia (GM) and also used it in a Renault Kadjar hire car in France, a GMC Yukon XL hire car whilst in California and then in my dads VW Golf...the only time it was buggy was in the Renault where sometimes it just wouldnt start up or sometimes it did and then froze. Now seeing as the phone software is the same no matter what i can only assume it was the way Renault had integrated it into their software.

I use it constantly and in the GMC i actually preferred using CarPlay to use Apple Maps\Google Maps over the sat nav that was in the car as standard. I dont find plugging it in a chore at all and dont think its that big a deal.

Our cars (I have a 2018 Cadillac XT5 -same platform as your car) has everything it needs to be able to do this. All we need is a software update. And like the new Ford system it is capable of OTA updates. Please GM give us our wireless Carplay!! But hey after the first of the year we will be getting Alexa support.
Good luck. I bought a Cadillac CTS 4 years ago that was the worst purchase of my life. Horribly unreliable, junky car (center screen delaminated and was replaced 4 times, sunroof cover exploded, just... bad). Stay far away from GM. Even Lincoln is better. But from now on I'm either buying Japanese or just getting a horse.

A line of EVs coming out? Sorry - no - AFAIK they are only planning on releasing hybrids.

This is not what I call an EV and that's why I will leave Ford.

And being stuck on Sync 2 with that real ****** Siri integration (I had to dl the update from the webs and put it on my Focus as Ford Online wouldn't give me an official Sync 2 upgrade btw) I am mor than happy to tell you that Ford will become irrelevant.

Ford today previewed its new SYNC 4 infotainment system, including support for wireless CarPlay and Android Auto. The new SYNC 4 system will be available on select Ford vehicles starting in 2020.

CarPlay on SYNC 3

The wireless solution works over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, allowing an iPhone to be connected to the CarPlay system without using a Lightning to USB cable. Ford joins BMW in offering wireless CarPlay, while brands like Alpine, Kenwood, JVC, and Pioneer also offer aftermarket receivers with wireless CarPlay.

CarPlay? is Apple's in-car platform that enables iPhone users to access a range of apps from the dashboard, such as Messages, Apple Maps, Apple Music, Podcasts, Overcast, Spotify, Pandora, WhatsApp, and Downcast. Since iOS 12, third-party navigation apps like Google Maps and Waze are also supported.

SYNC 4 will also be capable of receiving over-the-air software updates.

You forgot to mention that several 2019 Audi models include Wireless CarPlay: The A6, A7, A8, Q3, Q8, and e-tron all have Wireless CarPlay standard. Several 2020 models will also be updated to include it, including the A4, A5, Q5 and Q7. At that point, most of Audi's lineup will have it, with the exceptions being the soon-to-be discontinued R8 and TT, and the yet-to-be-redesigned A3.

Yeah...just another stupid SUV. In competition with Jaguar I-Pace...so guess how relevant this car really is.

My guess is most cars will add wireless charging support for this, personally I like to just plug a cable in rather than mess about with more wifi.

Perfect solution is wireless chargers paired with wireless CarPlay. I very much agree with charging the phone while driving though. That basically keeps my phone lasting the entire day.

Perhaps it wasn't obvious but it was a joke.

In fact were I live Ford does almost exclusively cars because the F series doesn't exist, the Ranger sells one in a million and their SUVs sell almost as badly as the Ranger.

What does get sold in large volumes is the Fiesta, the Focus (the hatch and the wagon, nobody buys the sedan) and a lot less the Mondeo (the liftback and the wagon). The S-Max and the C-Max also get some fans.
Once in a while you see a Mustang, unfortunately always not the V8. Nobody buys the V8 because it costs the same as a 911.

at least for Ford owners it’s rather easy to swap out your stock Ford radio or older sync system for whatever is current. (2015+ models) Ford designed the system to be quite modular so if you don’t have sync three you can swap out for it. I am sure you will be able to upgrade your sync three to sync four as well. Heck you can even swap out the analog dash for the digital one. Ford engineers actually thought forward for a change.
LOL and of course we have a 2014 :/
