US has for the most part, aside from some corporate use abandoned Blackberry almost entirely.
See market share and sales numbers that were over at crackberry for a while. Looks like US marketshare for BB's is < ~1%. So to be fair, he probably hasn't seen many out in the wild, especially if he's not a a corporate professional or management.
The rest of the world is a slightly different picture. It's still not a healthy spot, But they've turned around a bit. Earned a profit, and are seeing singificant sales boosts in 3rd world nations overseas, that still love the tech and devices, and can get them extremely cheap now (Z3 made by foxconn exclusively for "emerging markets")
