This is the 5C disaster all over again. Making too much of it and now they can't even give them away.

I hope they abandon the iPhone 8 and immediately focus on the iPhone X manufacturing.
Well it's based on what their suppliers can provide, not Apple focusing on manufacturing the 8/8+ over the X. Also the 5c/5s was a very different situation than the 8/X.

iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus pre-orders began at 12:01 a.m. Pacific Time or 3:01 a.m. Eastern Time today, and hours later, shipping estimates for select models have slipped to late September or early October for some models.

Fortunately, if you weren't willing to wake up at those hours or haven't yet pre-ordered for another reason, there's still a chance to get an iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus in your hands when they launch next Friday.

In the United States and other countries where Apple retail stores operate, such as Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom, many iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus models remain available for in-store pickup on September 22.

Even if a particular iPhone model isn't estimated to be delivered on launch day, it appears some units will still be reserved for in-store pickup.

An iPhone 8 Plus in Space Gray with 64GB of storage on T-Mobile, for example, is currently estimated to ship in 3-4 weeks on Apple's online store. Yet, the device is available for pickup on September 22 at multiple Apple retail stores.

Once you proceed to the checkout and click the blue "check out" button, select "pick up" and change the store location if necessary. Then click "continue" and select a 30-minute check-in window for your pickup.

If you will be picking up the iPhone personally, enter your phone number. If someone else will be arranging the pickup, enter his or her contact information. The person making the pickup must be carrying a valid photo ID.

Then, proceed with the checkout process as usual. Once payment has been made, wait until you receive a pickup notification email or text message by September 22 before picking up the iPhone. If you don't receive one, call the store.

Since the iPhone is paid for ahead of time, the store should presumably hold the device in its back room until you arrive.

Of course, another option is to simply wait until next Friday and walk into an Apple store, preferably right when they open. You may have to wait in line, but the queues have typically been shorter in recent years.

You can use the pickup tool on Apple's website on launch day to check if stores in your local area have stock, or call the store directly.

All in all, there are more than a few days to ensure you get your new iPhone on launch day, even if you missed the pre-order boat. In fact, select color, storage, and carrier combinations are still available for delivery by September 22.

If you would rather wait for the iPhone X, pre-orders of that device start October 27.

The news above is very logical since the supply of the phones for 8 and 8+ is not as constrained or severely limited as X and the store inventory for 8 and 8+ has been planned on the product launch planning. I doubt this situation will occur with X due to its difficulties to manufacture and production quantity limitation.

Clearly this availability is the result of The Notch. Hatred of The Notch is so widespread that it's affecting iPhone 8 sales.

One of the reasons is that modern iPhones don’t become obsolete as fast as Apple would hope. iPhone 6 is still working fine and has all key features, such as Apple Pay and Touch ID.

2nd reason is that iPhone 8 has a lazy, no, LAZY, 4-years-in-a-row design. Even iPhone X is heavily based on the same design, excluding screen. And iPhone 6 had the worst design of all iPhones (IMO, don’t start arguing). I don’t know what Jonathan Ive was doing at Apple all these years if he couldn’t come up not with anything better, but just with ANYTHING. Something new and different (and I don’t mean just different colors like gray, space gray, deep space gray, jet gray, blunt rose gray, edition gray, etc). If you really want to sell people new iPhone every year, you have to do something. New features are great, but they’re not life-changing anymore, just a nice addition, so if you want to seduce users for an upgrade for a ~$800 device you should try harder. Even cars are frequently updated with new design (and useful or useless features, but are updated).

3rd reason is that probably those who want to upgrade to the new iPhone despite those prices, they look at iPhone X. It’s more expensive, but at least it noticeably differs from the previous years models for existing users, and may be attractive to the new users who didn’t like (and never owned) previous years iPhones.

And those newcomers who want an iPhone but can’t afford the freshest model, can easily get a bit older but much cheaper and still great device (and even pretty similar to the iPhone 8, remember the 4 years old design?) from Apple, who so generously keeps selling the huuuge line of previous years models at reduced prices.

I think the 8, 8 plus, and x are good iPhones. Not great.

I didn't think apple would announce the 8, 8 plus, and x.

I thought they would only announce the 7s and 7s plus. But the 8 and 8 plus are just in fact only incremental upgrades to the 7 and 7 plus and should have been called 7s and 7s plus.

My main gripe with the 8 is that it doesn't have an oled screen.

And my main gripe overall is that AppleCare is more expensive for all devices. And that the cost per incident to get something fixed also increased while on AppleCare. I mean come on apple you already charge us an arm and a leg for the phone now you are going to rip us off on AppleCare? That's bullsht.

I'm not upgrading. I have a 256 iPhone 7 plus. I would have highly considered upgrading to the 8 plus if it had an oled screen and AppleCare was the same price.

Lots of naysayers here. I actually hope you're all correct, as I've been looking to switch from buying via T-Mobile to the IUP, but they require me to purchase in-store once the phone has already launched. So hoping iphone X doesn't sell out.

I might actually Jump to the iPhone 8 64 first. Haven't had a 4.7" iPhone, so I'd like to try it out to have a basis of comparison with the X.

I have a 7S Plus 128 right now. Only use 80 GB, with 50 GB being pics. It's a lot cheaper to upgrade to iCloud 200 GB than get increased storage when I'm only going to keep it 1 year.

Two premium-priced phones without the same tech as THE premium phone. Apple should've made two X's sizes and nothing more. Those devices are rather unnecessary...

Apple already has supply constraint with the OLED panels as it is. This year would not have been likely possible to supply a secondary OLED iPhone. Next year, Apple is rumored to have OLED across the iPhone line up, they expanded their contract with LG after Samsungs contract expires.

Except Apple is the richest company in the world now and makes 10s of billions a year.

It's all relative though...

I don't believe you understand business and their market. I like iPhones - I'm glad they don't listen to forum advice.
My point was in respect to them further fracturing the iPhone lineup. As a developer, it's a pain in the arse. So many models and screens.

Apple used to be about perfecting simple design and limiting the range... well, after Jobs came back and cleared out the cobwebs. Looks like they're slipping back to the bad old days.

I'd buy an iPhone X if they *only* offered them - in two sizes - going forward. To me, it's a sign that they've lost their nerve.

Hopefully this slow sale means excellent deals in coming days. Gotta wait for it and buy one later.

As a developer, only the X proves a difficulty. If a dev hasn't begun to write with screen scaling UI... eesh.

But I agree, the fractured lineup might be more than ideal for consumers but it isn't convenient for any sort of case/app/etc. producer.

For once, I believe the lineup is perfect for every user case - quality small phone, quality cheaper old options, quality new options at two sizes, and a technologically advanced preview of the future in the perfect size.

How does this headline indicate slow sales??? You are all making your own narrative. Literally every iPhone has launch day inventory available at the stores for the past 10 years.

I'm waiting for the iPhone X, however the price is giving me hesitation.[/QUOTE
That's my case too... I'm waiting for the X, but till than I might give up $$$
[doublepost=1505531485][/doublepost]Another issue that is making me wait is that I have an iPhone 7 plus and love the battery life. I would like to hear from the early adopters if the battery life is acceptable

Ok. Does this get rid of all the conspiracies that every time apple launches a new phone they "create demand by having supply constraints"? No? Ok then

Nope...

Sticking with current hardware for yet another year - maybe two - now. Really underwhelming and a stupid amount of product fragmentation, with lame design choices (red crown as one example, iPhone X notch as another).

Now if they'd come out with some great new Airport hardware with mesh networking, AirPlay 2 and Bluetooth 5 to expand HomeKit devices' range I'd buy three of them in a heartbeat. But no, they're ditching their 'ecosystem hardware' and focusing on this crap.

I know right?! What is with that ugly red dot? It sticks out like a sore thumb and doesn't match or look good at all.

The 8, 8+ & X are just horrible. I'd get the eight but it's not much different from my launch day 6. And the X looks cool to me but I'm completely against the face ID. I don't like the idea. Who knows if people are hacking and watching you.
I'm holding out another year in hopes for a updated revision of iPhone SE. And my 3rd gen iPad is hanging in there waiting for iPad Mini 5 I'll buy that in a heart beat.

I hate to break it to you, but people can theoretically “hack and watch you” with your iPhone 6’s front facing camera. I hope I didn’t make you paranoid now!

I just needed a replacement phone for my 6+ that's getting a little long in the tooth. Nothing about any of the new phones gets me excited, just time to upgrade because of a decent trade in value. I am surprised at the number of people willing to spend more for the X which just seems like the same old phone in a slightly more convenient size to me. To each their own.

No I know that but now for some reason it just feels even more personal. A device scanning your face. Storing what I don't know. I just don't like the sound of it. I never liked the idea of a selfie camera. And now this is. I'm just not thrilled the least bit about it. It seems so unnecessary that I wonder if there's some hidden agenda. Yeah now I'm sure I sound paranoid but honestly it does sound creepy.

I would agree if this was Google, but Apple has been an advocate of consumer privacy all along and explicitly designed the hardware to protect the data on the device. It may seem like an unnecessary feature ripe for exploitation of users' privacy, but the exact same claims were made against Touch ID. I suspect that this face ID tech will become another must-have feature that proves more reliable than even Touch ID. I think about, for example, getting the Touch ID sensor to work if my hands are even a bit wet.

I think they are instead saying that this is a fresh start for a new product, like the original iPhone. I.E. This is not iPhone, this is iPhone X. And like the original iPhone, they believe they have the only correct size for this new type of iPhone. That and they want to sell you a new one a few years down the road too!

It may be more impressive in person. I think about how striking the Retina display was when I first saw it on the iPhone 4. Those who have seen the new phone seem to be having a similar reaction. All along, it really has only ever been about the display. Possibly the cameras too. But the major leaps on the iPhone have always been major changes in display tech or size.

Just looking at the close up images of the 'notch' in the iPhone X compared to the thin bezel around the entire screen has me thinking...

I suspect we'll see the Face ID hardware shrink to fit within this bezel in a future design - perhaps in a year or two. That will be my next iPhone (currently have a 6s)

I also expect the next Apple Watch to have the same external design, but feature a larger screen which goes closer to the edges (and possibly with rounded corners) like in iPhone X, which for the Watch, represents a huge screen size jump.

Apple's future plans can sometimes be gleaned from seemingly strange contemporary design choices and omissions.

I also expect to see Face ID in Macs soon... perhaps as early as the iMac Pro? It would seem a fitting model to introduce it and would do away with issues of Touch ID embedded in remote peripherals (ie. Bluetooth keyboards)
