Ive was never meant to be a manager. This is what led to him leaving Apple. The man is a creator and was at his best for Apple when doing just that. How many product designers of the 21st Century can say that the things they created directly influenced the lives of the entire planet? Every other phone looks like the iPhone 4; Ive's DNA is in every handset made by rival companies.

I would argue that nobody at Apple had the guts to stand up to him and tell him what a mess he had become as a manager.

Just because you're a "creator" doesn't mean the rest of the rules of being an adult don't apply to you. All he had to do was sit in a car and get driven to work and meetings on time and couldn't do that? That's just disrespectful to his co workers. Anyone else gets fired for that behavior. Just seems childish to me but what do I know.

I miss his videos. For me, his pretentious pomposity is highly entertaining.

No mention in that list that he owns a turntable so why the $5,600 Linn tonearm? We'll never know.
I know. I was kind of baffled to see a tone arm listed but no stylus and no turntable. If I’m not mistaken Linn has a turntable system, they do, that comes with said Tonearm and stylus and everything else you’d need to $30k but saw a turntable that was going $200k doing a basic google search.

Your post is definitely subject to debate with your chosen adjectives, but he used his articulation and accent to hype marketing for Apple products in a way that made them sound very prestigious (Which Apple is as a ‘brand’), similarly to his narration with the Apple Watch design when it first launched. Regardless, he wasn’t just a ‘designer’, he was a marketing genius. And good at it I’ll add.

Omg, what a load of cr@p to justify such expensive things!

when put into perspective of the billions of dollars that other people horde and can't spend in many a lifetime and no one gets to live off, this is peanuts. At least he or if someone else actually paid for his collection someone got some money put back in their pocket.

Nice selection of tools. In general I love Wiha and Wera tools.

I would also add Starrett hook rules, 6", 12", and 24" lengths (or metric equivalents). I use those everyday for a variety of purposes. They are a joy to use.
Also a fan of Wiha and Wera amongst others, including Tekton who's torque wrenches cost about 10% of what that Snap-On cost. And my Stanley tape measure works just fine and was about $10.

He had managed the ID Team for years before to Steve's death...The issue was Tim thinking that can translate to other departments (like UI). I still think the icons/UI choices that came in iOS 7 (and some that are still present) were the ugliest cartoony looking things ever.

It seemed like from other accounts that Steve harnessed Ive's design choices and gave him direction. Looks like as you said, no one stood up to Ive after Steve left in that regard.

Exactly. Ive was good until there was Jobs around to direct him

"There's a beauty and a joy in the machines and tools. They are no longer solely a means to an end. I think there's an inherent elegance in an effective tool that normally results in a curious beauty."

I guess this is the kind of mumbo jumbo one comes up with to feel better about spending $530 on a Stanley measuring tape with leather wrapped over the case?

These aren't so much his tools as a list of objects he finds particularly beautifully designed. E.g., he's not carrying around a Linn tonearm!

I don't begrudge him the prices—he's got big bucks, so he has the luxury of buying what he wants without regard for the cost. That $530 Hermes pocket measuring tape (https://www.hermes.com/us/en/product/in-the-pocket-measuring-tape-H074572CK7U/) is more elegant and portable than my $15 Stanley Leverlock. For most people, the difference in cost is ridiculous. But for him it's insignificant. So why not get the Hermes, if it pleases him?

It's no more unreasonable (or overpiced) than buying a supercar. Actually much less so. Yet the same people who claim he's pretentious for getting this stuff wouldn't bat an eye if told he owned, say, a $2.25M Ferrari Daytona SP3.

I've spent some time on construction sites and I can only imagine the look on everyone's face if I had pulled out a frickin Hermes tape measure lol
Could you also imagine going to a tailors to get measured up for a suit, and the tailor, dressed in hi-vis and steel capped boots, pulling out a tape measure from a construction site :)

Now we know why the iMacs only tilt so far because he’s using a protractor. :p

A lot of people here complaining about overpriced, beautiful tools. You all seem to forget that you are Apple fans. Apple essentially being a producer of overpriced, beautiful tech. Yep, I ordered a brand new 16" M1 MBP, and with extras is AU$5k+. It's an overpriced, beautiful tool, but it is the best, and I will use it all day, every day, for years, for my work and my play.

I also have a shed full of tools I've accumulated over the years. Rarely anything as pricey or beautiful as Ive's collection, sad to say. I don't use them all day, every day, so can't justify those costs. But I did learn many years ago that cheap tools are things you have to pay for twice, once for the cheap version that soon breaks, and then a second time for the quality version that you should have bought in the first place. If I was an industrial designer, then I too would spend the money for some of the top shelf tools.
